hi all, im looking at buying another bass, im really getting in to slap/funk style, im using a markbass head 2x10 and 4x10hf cabs, ive got a warwick lx streamer jazzman, very powerful active bass! which i could be selling soon, im not keen on warwick sound, so not sure what to go for yet? is there any expert slap players that could give me some solid advice please! many thanks, mick.
Hi Mick.. Well the obvious ones are a Stingray or a Jazz...but you can slap on anything depending one what you think sounds good... My Modulus's slap tone is fantastic... I used to love the slap tone from my old Yamaha TRB6... there is no, ONE bass for slap, its subjective... Round up a few basses and do some research on Harmony Central, You tube... IMO you cant beat the slap tone of a Fender Jazz...Stingrays sound awsome too..
hehe ace. Just came back from a jam, had a great time. So many great players down at the Mill beach pub in heybridge on a thursday jam. Yes i know what you mean mate. I think of the bass as the cement between the rhytham and melody. :-)
Rich what bass you playing now..im sure i saw a thread about it but canny remember?

versatility.. Ive always thought of the bass as the drums, with the added capacity for direction of harmony thats played, depending on the color of the harmony being played.. as Yoda would would say.. many variables may they become..
I never suggested it was for a want of pop-soul, I suggested it was to provide oneself with a credible form of great music that has been taken off-course by the vast majority of 'mainstream' artists. You're right, I have listened to a fair bit of D'angelo this week with my behind the beat remark , but I stand by my opinion that Neo Soul is a genuine modern take (therefore incorporating modern cultural aspects, hiphop etc) on old soul music, a more thoughtful execution of it's chart-focused breathren perhaps. Si
Yes i agree Si.. I guess it is but you could say that about lots of music.. Did you mean it was a release from the more commercial artists that are trying there (capable maybe, hands at soul)
Anybody know what bass this is? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uA7g0RyP4ps
a great sounding Ibanez BTB

Sorry but i dont think this is the case Si... Credible yes but main stream lovers want for pop soul its not... i dont know how much you have listened to.. As for playing behind the beat, with all due respect you been listening to too much D Angelo.. You have named artists such as Meshell, D Angelo, but these people (although have taken there influence from such artists from the 60's) have forged a totally different sound and feel... there is huge amounts of soul music that is not pop..its just good soul music.. i dont mind labeling music..like different shades of blue.....you gotta call it something..

Some of the very best soul produced today me thinks... IMHO its an amalgamation of modern soul, funk, but the change that makes it slightly different, comes from jazz, hiphop... lets face it there is such a blend of this sort of stuff, its difficult to make it out...Erykah Badu is cool... Young Disiples, are very much Neo Soul..and nothing to do with Acid Jazz as some may say... Jill Scott is good listening.. D Angelo too these may give u an example of this sort of vibe.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hVp47f5YZg Some super funk Neo.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9d9eydCfTdw the best Neo soul intro ever..you gotta wait for it but its live and its soooo funky.. Can super fancy playing be worth listening to?
On the subject of fancy playing being worth listening to, Victor Wooten is the king of this. His stuff is just insane, and so hard to copy convincingly. Yet he has perhaps the most easily identifiable "voice" of any bassist since Jaco and he never struggles to produce catchy melodies. I think he really needs to get back to his bass prowess rather than focusing on so many "band" arrangements but thats another story... ...in the meantime, I am always awed by this performance.
Oh yeah...my dads a classic pianist...he knows nothing about bass and is a little old fashioned...i showed him this vid and he was blown away.. he watches Victor alot.. Musical yes...Takes you on a journey Yes.. -
The above Chippendale commode recently sold at Sotheby's for £3.8m. It's quite clearly a masterpiece, requiring the utmost patience and finest skill to create such an exquisite and unique object. I can look at it and wonder at the skill of the craftsman who created it. I can be astonished that anyone could create such an intricate object with only hand tools. I can freely acknowledge it is a work of great art. Do I like it? Not at all.
Ha! this is perfect!!!!! i love his skills, and i can appreciate it.. but i like to be taken on a journey with a bass solo.. he didnt take me anywhere... musical maybe, direction....erm.. -
The problem with him is that he treats the rest of the band like three stooges. Just watch the video Nick posted, where his is flouncing about the stage like a bloody idiot. He is the person I think of whenever I hear people on this site complaining about idiotic, over-indulged frontment annoying everyone with their antics.
Ha!.. i gotta agree on the prancing about...his dancing is not the best.. but i think hes a little deeper than your suggesting.. I very much doubt he has a lack of respect for his band..not quite sure where you got that from...? hes a great musician who has come along way.. i agree with Doctor J.. he has character and is passionate and it shows.. Oh yeah Gallagher, possibly the stupidest human being alive...everything i hate about an attitude is with that ermm...moron.. glad i dont have to switch on the tv and see that guy anymore..

i was watching this vid of people singing Anita classics.. how boring would it be, if they matched her note for note.? The parameters should be in place but there is room for maneuver... some interpretations you may not like but thats up to the bassist... Lallah is smoking by the way... i like to think im opened minded most of the time when it comes to music...me and my sister were not a fan of the Smiths when we were growing up.. as ive got older i love them...just wonderful music..in my naivity i could never see groove in there music..but as ive gotten older, i totally love there music.. i could listen to it all day.. also is Morrissey not the coolest dude! two of there more popular tunes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjkMhwNWcbY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRa3jIzZ1EY
