So what is a Jazz bass and what is the best example?
bubinga5 replied to Linus27's topic in Bass Guitars
the easy answer is.. if hasnt got these 4 attributes its not a true jazz bass.... imo 1. Jazz shaped body 2. Single coil jazz pickups 3. jazz neck 4. Passive I love the copies of jazz basses like Sadowsky's, Suhr's, etc.. but there not a true jazz bass... they look like one but there still a copy... nowt wrong with trying to improve on the design but Fender did it first and there no way to bend the image or sound.. you could say, even Fender has blurred what is really a jazz bass, but its still a Fender Jazz bass.. my conclusion is, if i doesnt say Fender Jazz bass on the headstock, its not really a jazz bass.. its a copy and you really have to stop it there imo... if i had endless cash i wouldnt buy a Fender Jazz... because others just do it better, but it doesnt take away the fact that im buying copy -

.. P, when i first started playing i struggled just like yourself.. first off why did you give up lessons? a GOOD teacher is invaluable!!! i cant stress that enough.. maybe you didnt find the right teacher.. there is nothing like the one on one.... i had piano lessons for a little while and its so important to have that close information contact.. i taught myself how to play bass and i think it shows in my theory, and i think that really thats why i wanted to play in the first place.. dont play theory catch up like im doing...if that what you want from the instrument? i usually find Youtube information to be bit by bit.. you never really find the info you want....unless Jack's suggestion might be good mind... if you dont want to go back to a teacher i recommend a book by a guy called Stephan Richter, its just called "BASS".. comes with 2 CD's.. its THE most comprehensive book ive ever come across, and ive seen lots... if youve got the time and patience its all there.. of course a book like this will bring up questions, so i go back to my first point.. a good teacher.. no matter where you go you will always want to ask questions about stuff you may get stuck on... the best way to learn is from human beings who can can show you in real time.... from a book it depends how well you soak up information and understand it. also listen to music.. im sure you do. but really listen, and listen all the time... i used to surround everywhere i went with music and still do there are much more knowledgeable guys on here, that could prob give you some better advice.. i dont know them, but maybe you could ask guys like Bilbo, Doddy.. i dont want to speak for them, but im sure they wouldnt mind a quick Q.. i know what its like to need answers to something your passionate about... i wish you well

i agree, and i think it shows a good musician that wants to be creative...i applaud you for it.... ive played bass lines that i know and inverted the bass line within the chord and all sorts, double stops, a little slap.. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt.. this is always within the comfort of a studio/music room... then if you and your band think it works, let it go live... i cant stand the thought of music being a regime , ive spent 15 years learning how to play with no help, so i want to make sure i enjoy it..its my passion..... music is suppose to be fun, and what ever music your playing should be approached in that way... imo
Wow - look amazing! I might prefer it to be a bit of a darker blue but I'm a sucker for his kind of finish
cant say im a massive fan of the light blue either Barrie, but that quilt is just awsome... my new GAS has just reared its attractive head and showed what will haunt my wallet for the next year........ sh*t..

i listened to this song this evening after a crap family row.. sounds a bit cheesy, but i wish people would do it more often... family or not.. group hug??? music is the best remedy..

damn you Risington, i thought i let the gas go with my new jazz but those Pensas just sound asmome

i was very very close to buying a 4 string Pensa jazz, direct from Rudy Pensa at the music stop.....he was a co builder of Suhr guitars as im sure you know... i just couldnt drop 2900.00 on a jazz at the time.. i wish i had of taken the jump..i was a phone call away close.. i bought a sadowsky 5 instead...... idiot.... it was a flame maple blue with matching headstock , with maple neck, pearl blocks and the most amazing gold tone knobs with pearl inlays.. too flashy? probably, but they are jazz basses that get my GAS going like no other jazz.. Suhrs and Pensas are my holly grail of jazz basses... is there any better preamp'd tone on a jazz that Ris just posted...not imo.. there just wonderful..

THE.. most amazing quilted maple top with matching headstock...its almost 3D.. i played one once with the Suhr preamp and it was prob the best transparent quality i ever played.. it sounded like the perfect 70's jazz... these are VERY expensive though...

when i first heard this band in the early 80's, it turned me on to bass.. even if you dont like this band, Randy's bass playing greatness is undeniable... imo. his 16th note fingerstyle at 3.00 onwards is just awsome
