A Safe Way To Stack Cabs With Castors/Wheels.
binky_bass replied to binky_bass's topic in Amps and Cabs
@Teebs that sir, is interesting. Very interesting indeed... and exactly the kind of solution I was hoping this thread would generate! If the silicone castor cups don't work then I shall make myself one of these and claim it was my idea all along and if someone says "hey, isn't that Teebs idea?" then I shall quickly silence them with a home brew of a cyricin based poison I always keep handy for such 'silencings'... followed by running away into the night while violently twiddling my moustache. -

The Mesa cabs don't have interlocking corner protectors, they have Track-Loc castors that remove by sliding them out which then leave the rubber feet to take the load, they're 100% safe to stack if you slide out the track-loc castors of the top cab thus utilising the rubber feet. Well, my initial order was for 2 silver grilled Traditional cabs, GG then called me to say one had a black grill, they gave me a little incentive to take it so I did... when it arrived it had slightly different corner protectors as well as the different grill, after a bit of tooing and froing GG took back the silver one and sent me another black one, which has again different corner protectors that either the silver or the black one and has a different back panel... so it seems to me that Mesa built iut the last remaining Traditional series cabs with whatever they had left (which doesn't impede the quality at all) and then Westside Distribution (UK Mesa distributors) sold them to GG at a discount price as they were end of line. That's my theory anyway! Still, my new full rig has an RRP of £6200, I paid £2600 in total and it's all new (well, new old stock I suppose!) so I'm not complaining!! -

The Mesa specs on the GuitarGuitar website have a good few errors in them. The 1x15 I'm sure is 300w but can't comment on the ohmage. Technically one of my cabs in a Traditional with a black grill, even though they never made black grill Traditionals, so I assume it was the last one out of the factory and they only had a black grill left! The other is a 'Vintage' which has slightly different cones and has a built in crossover in the rear, again this seems to be somewhat of an oddity as this spec cab doesn't exist in any Mesa catalogue. The cabs I have, and the remaining Traditional/Vintage ones on GuitarGuitar seem to be built out of whatever Mesa had left from that series so they're all a little different! (From my experience and looking at the 2 cabs I have vs the spec available on Mesa's website). -

Hi @tvickey, The cabs are 600w each and run at 8 ohms, they have 2 speakon inputs on the rear and an adjustable tweeter. They don't have interlocking corners but do have track-loc castors that remove easily allowing the sturdy rubber feet to then take over. Hope that helps! -

Well that's the dream! The point of my request for suggestions was to find a solution that avoids A. removing the castors. B. not to have the cabs on the side, and C. not making any 'destructive' adjustments. I want to simply be able to plonk one cab on top of the other as quickly as possible. Thems the rules! Hopefully the silicone castor cups will do the job. -

Not an option sir for the two reasons mentioned above. Non negotiable for me! -

Nah, the Mesa Track-Loc castors simply slide out of the metal plate bolted onto the bottom of the cab, the cab also has rubber feet which then become the contact point when the castors have been removed. They do remove easily, but I'm lazy and can't be bothered to do it so wanted a lazy mans resolution! -

I know! I thought the same! Though the Track-Loc name refers to the castors sliding into metal plates screwed to the bass of the cab and 'locking' into place. -

These castors are Mesa's own Track-Loc castors, to my knowledge they don't do a locking variant, which to me has always seemed odd. Realistically it would cost them pennies to add a lock to the two front castors, but hey, they don't even include the relevant footswitch on a £3600 amp! I'll try these silicone bottomed cups, if it's stable enough then problem solved! If not, then I shall report back here for more ideas! -

I shan't be tipping them! A: Visually I don't want them on their side! Can't be having a 90° logo! B: The sides have no 'feet' on them so they'd get scuffed instantly. I think I've actually found a possible solution! Black silicone bottomed castor cups! Might work... -
Any bright ideas? I have two cabs, both with excellent castors that make moving them much less horrendous however it makes stacking them with the castors on exceptionally dangerous! They're matching Mesa Boogie Vintage Powerhouse 4x10 cabs and both have flat tops (no divets like some Marshall cabs have) and the castors are not locking. I want to be able to stack them without constantly having to remove the castors from the top cab. Wondering if anyone has any good ideas on how to stack these safely without me removing the castors, without permanently altering either cab and in the knowledge the castors do not lock. Ta! Russ.

I had debated the 8x10 but there's no real way I'd be able to handle that physically without doing damage. The 4x10 cabs are manageable, though I'll no doubt still die from spinal compression at some point in the future! @thodrik, what head are you running your 6x10 with? -
So after a fair amount of faffery with GuitarGuitar (who actually have extremely good customer service!) I finally now have the full and complete matching rig in hand! And it is a MONSTER!! I've had more rigs than I can count over the years, but this thing is obscene. The volume is astonishing, I got it up to 50% volume on Thursday at Mushroom Studios and dared not go higher as I could feel the vibrations in my lungs (and I'm not joking!) The tone is simply stunning, deep and clear with crisp articulate highs. The ONLY downside is that it weighs 240lbs all in which I can forgive as the build quality is utterly flawless with no expense spared on build materials. I don't see myself moving this on ever, I wouldn't know where to start to get something better/comparable. Truly a remarkable rig, definitely need to keep up my weight training to move this one about!

A well crafted scarf joint will have absolutely no discernable effect of overall tone. The major difference would be through neck vs bolt on neck. As Bite Guitars offer only bolt on neck, I still can't see their point being overly justifiable. I'll take a scarf joint through neck all day long over a flat headstock bolt on. Just my humble opinion of course!

Why are your 'garage tools' all just giant knives??? 😂

Didn't see that part! A good long screw always does the trick!

@BITE Guitars You're comment on glued scarf joint headstock being weaker is simply not true, if you are indeed a fully trainer luither, or have one on staff, you will know this is not true. The correct joining techniques used with the correct glues will result in a join stronger that the surrounding wood. I feel that a lot of what you have said in response to some comments here are more to justify your design choices as opposed to being factually correct. This either shows that you don't have particularly good subject knowledge or are trying to pull wool over our eyes in convincing us that your techniques and designs are all superior than other manufacturers. You have a great test bed of enthusiastic players here and the one consistent comment seems to be a dislike for your headstock shape, should you not take this into consideration? We are all you potential customers and are mostly all saying the same thing to you. Worth taking on board I'd think... Also, if people want a traditional body style such as a P or J then they're almost certainly going to want the whole bass to reflect that style, this headstock will cut your potential buyers in half whereas having a more traditional headstock wouldn't put people off. I understand the want to be different, but you are doing it at the cost of potential customers. Can you not offer a more traditional headstock option for those who want it? If you want to be unique, then why not offer a unique body shape to go with your headstock? Just changing the headstock and keeping the traditional body seems like a recipe to minimize customers. I don't mean to be overtly negative, but the above is my reflection on your company from this thread and your comments within it, from other people's comments it would appear some feel similarly. As already mentioned, an update to the correct flag would also be wise. In the current climate of things I can imagine using a version of the Union Jack that was last flown 219 years ago could be enough to turn someone away. Unless you did that by design because you don't recognize Ireland being part of the Union? (Joke)
