1. Hi All , didn't see a thread about this so I started one. Ive considered buying basses online a few times however the thing that has always stopped me is the thought of receiving a bass with a neck like a crossbow. What online stores have people used that they have had good customer service experiences with when something went wrong.
 2.
So i'm playing one of the Japanese only ones I think, with the curved top (which means i can't put a Badass on it without surgery) The problems I've been having all the while with this bass are that the bottom string gets really 'warbley' for want of a better word. It's pretty alright open all the way up to fret 5 or 6 then it just starts to sound pretty nasty. This isn't helped at all by the fact i tune down to DAdG, but I unfortunately need those two notes for my band. I replaced the pickups with wizrd PJs and this improved the tone quite a bit, even on the bottom string, but the more i play it, the less happy with it I get (Andy from Wizrd pickups did a great job though. The bass has been properly set up and all that stuff, but it just ain't giving me what I want. As of late i've been thinking about upgrading my head to something real nice like an orange Ad200, but I'm worried incase I experience the same bottom string problems. Any advice? time for a new bass?
What gauge string do you have for the low D string , maybe going a gauge heavier would help, worth a try , I tune DGCF with power slinkies , the D is a .110 gauge and it sounds good but it would definately sound better with a .115
 3. Ive said it before in this thread, but ... Flatwounds are your friend for this kind of tone
 4.
I suggested this in the Geddy Lee Isolated Thread, so I'm running with the idea... I'll list them in bands Alphabetically, and update this first post when more tracks appear. I think it'd be best to only have the basslines being played by the original artists, either live, or the studio versions. Anyway, here we go. Unadulterated Bass Filth. Matt
The Interpol "Obstacle 1" Bass track is ace , when I heard the bass track I was convinced he was playing a Thunderbird , it just sounded too much like one to not be one. I looked him up on google and found out it is a Jazz bass , I could see it being a P bass but I would never have guessed it was a Jazz in a million years , just goes too show how true it is about the tone being in the player and not the bass.
 5.
This all sounds a bit odd to me. ProSteels are listed as having a lower tension than D'Addario XL nickels at the same gauge -- and only slightly, to the extent that you might well not notice, and you might not have to adjust your neck relief or action. Behold (for example) the 45-105 long scale XLs compared to the 45-105 long scale ProSteels. I don't know how Ernie Ball's tensions compare to XLs, but I wouldn't have thought they would be so different that switching to ProSteels would mean a huge jump up in tension. Might it be the case that people are actually finding the ProSteels stiffer (i.e. less flexible, so more difficult to pluck laterally) than nickel rounds? That seems more feasible, and it explains Delberthot's statement that he didn't have to adjust the neck. Two strings at exactly the same tension (tension being measured along the length of the string) could feel completely different to pluck, depending on the construction of the string -- they'll move differently. This is all just falling out of the top of my head, so it's not very well put, but it's something I've been wondering about for a while.
You may well be right there, that would make sense to me as I did not initially notice the tension when I first strung the bass with these strings , it was only after I had played the bass for a while that I noticed that my fingers felt like they were going to fall off
 6.
I bought prosteels for a Rickenbacker once. I got my usual 45 gauge but they were mental high tension.
Glad its not just me who's noticed it. I never struggled with the tension of a set of roundwounds until I tried Prosteels, they lasted all of 2 hours before I took them off my bass and put the power slinkies back on
 7. Having grown a bit tired of the lack of brightness from the Power slinkies on my bass I decided to get a pack of heavy gauge Daddario Prosteels (I tune 1 step down) , after about an hour of playing these strings I gotta say "my fingers are killing me" , the tension on these strings is brutal , ive taken them off and put my power slinkies back on. I love the tone but the tension is way too high so I think next time I change strings ill get Prosteels but in the next gauge down. Anyhow rant over now
 8. I used to have a flying v bass , it was awesome until you tried to sit down with it , i bought it foolishly without trying it , i played it for about a month before I got rid of it

 10. The quality of some of the entry level priced basses nowadays really amazes me , its impressive that for £229 you have a bass with bass, treble and mid sweep
 11.
Yes, you're right on the Ed Friedland video. The vibe jazz did sound better. And yes, I know the bass needed setting up. If I'd had alan-keys in my suit pocket at the time, I'd have done it myself
I wasn't questioning that you knew the bass needed a setup I just thought it was worth mentioning as people do sometimes equate high action with cheap basses when all that is needed is a quick setup. Im glad you agree with me about the ed freidland video , it shows my hearings not playing up after all
 12.
surely thats a matter of opinion http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5iK9rH0Ftc
Oh man , you've just double my gas for a Gibbo EB0
 13.
ISTR the Squier VMJ has the bridge pickup in the 70's position, further away from the bridge. Please correct me if I'm wrong...
Its actually closer to the bridge
 14.
I was only playing it through a cheap Peavey amp & you could fly an airliner between the strings & fingerboard, but it really nailed the classic jazz sound better than anything I've heard or played in ages.
That can probably be corrected with a setup , a lot of the time music shops dont bother to set up their instruments which makes no sense to me Regarding the sound , I saw the infamous Guitar world video of ed freidland comparing his Fenders to the Classic vibe basses and I gotta say I actually preferred the sound of the classic vibe jazz to his Fender jazz bass
 15. I had a shortscale Epiphone SG Bass , it had its flaws , the tuners were pants and the intonation was always a little iffy but it was the most playable bass I have owned , the shortscale narrow neck made it a breeze to play
 16.
I have a cij 62 ri also and its original sunburst finish (cellulose?) has mojo. I have a quote for a respray from a reputable workshop but they spray polyester/polyeurethane. Does anyone think the value would suffer much? It is otherwise completely original
Does yours have the stacked knobs or the v/v/t setup , im trying to work out if mine is a reissue or just a standard cij jazz , it came with bridge cover so i think it may be a reissue but not 100% sure
 17. Hi all , Was just wondering , How much do used CIJ Fender Jazz normally sell for ? I have a 98 CIJ Jazz in Sunburst (may be a 62 reissue, not 100% sure , can get pics up later ) that has had Us 62 Reissue pickups fitted (original pickups stopped working) and now has US pots, knobs and jack and although it is a nice bass im just more into the fat growl of the P bass so am considering selling to help fund this. This is not an advert , I will be trying different strings and pickups etc to see if I can get closer to the P tone before I consider letting go of this bass

 20.
Their dads ferry them to 'gigs' and set the gear up for them while they stand around looking vaguely interested. They spend the whole night playing power chords learnt from Tab off the internet while adoring jailbait looks on. The dads stand at the back nodding all the way through and then pack up the gear at the end. The upshot? It's all done for them! They haven't had to do it for themselves. As a kid I had to bus 6 miles to practices then carry my amp and bass about a mile (stopping for many rests) so that by the time I got there I could hardly play.
Bitterness is a foul smelling cologne
 21.
Listening to some of the live stuff on you tube, it sounds like quite a middley sort of sound - still a decent amount of bottom end without much at the top. In fact quite a classic flatwound tone. You shouldn't underestimate how much of someones tone lies in their fingers.
Musky is right , I have 2 Jazz basses , one with nickle roundwounds and one with old flatwounds , the Jazz bass with flatwounds nails the sound on Sex on fire , the Jazz with nickel rounds is way too zingy , there must be a way to get that tone with nickel rounds as the bass player from kol uses them , however ive found flats will get you closer to that sound

 24. bought some pickups from him , good communication , pickups arrived within a couple of days and were well packaged
 25. OK , managed to source some US pickups , have taken my bass to Feline guitars to have a look at , they are going to replace the pots , jack socket etc as well as the pickups, they seem very helpful so far , just got to wait for the work to be completed now .
