1.
I'm thinking of starting up another project bass, based on a jazz body most likely, I'm looking for a real punch in the guts sort of sound, my last project was built to growl and sustain, which was pretty successful. So, what gives the punch? I've been told bolt on neck, light bridge and light body, and MM style pickup. Anything to add, experiences, details, philosophy and luthier voodoo, etc?
I would think that a heavy duty bridge such as a bad ass 2 style bridge would definately give more punch than a light bridge. MM style pickup makes sense , if possible one in the normal MM position for the MM style bite and punch and another MM style p/up near the neck for some thump
 2. On my main bass the nut is a little worn (grooves are a little wide for the strings) ,although its not causing a problem at the moment I can see that it may cause problems if I wanted to go with a lighter string gauge or different string type. As it approaching christmas i can't really afford to fork out £40 to have a pro fix it. What I was wondering is if there is anything i can use to fill the slots and then file them out to the correct thickness? Any ideas?

 4.
I love the sound & feel of LaBellas on short scale fender musicmaster basses, but the G wasn't long enough on both sets I bought with different guages so I have had to use a G from an old 34" set which is a bit naff The lighter set are on a daisy rock heartbreaker (2/2 headstock so they fit) which has a wonderful old-school precision tone with them.
I love the Fender Musicmaster bass , I know a lot of people dont like them but I love the sound and feel of them, I can see that flats would sound good on a Musicmaster
 5. Hi All, Thought I would share my experience with the Labella flats. I am very impressed so far , had these on only a couple of weeks so far but straight from the packet these strings sounded good. None of that excessive new string brightness that you get with some flats when new , these are kind of upright bass sounding and are very old school sounding
 6.
MD, thanks..... They are bit unknown to me, I dont know of anyone that has their axe strung with them..... B.
Hi Burpster , I believe that Galli strings have only recently been available in the uk but people have made some very positive comments about them. You can get Roto Trubass for cheap from stringsdirect but you need to buy 3+ sets of them
 7.
Anyone know of anywhere cheaper than Dolphins £22 for a set of Tru Bass Nylon wound flatties?
No , but stringbusters sell the Galli nylon flats for £18 , they are meant to be very nice strings, might be worth a try
 8.
I was in the mkt for a P/J P earlier this year..... I ended up getting one (a custom shop bblah blah), however this was one I looked at.. I played one at Sound Control and was blown away..... Yes it works..... it has some great flexibility and is well loud.... My guitarist talked me out of it because it is MIM, using the argument that if you buy a Fender buy 1 that will go up in value....... I kinda wish I'd got that Bello bass....Why? Well the 1 I bought cost twice as much, and is in its HSC under my bed not being played, and does it sound any better than that Bello P? Nope..... My advice FWIW, is ..... If you like it (try playing 1st if you can) get one you wont be dissapointed..... If you dont like it give me first dibs on it when you decide to blow it away!
Cheers Burpster , If I get one and don't like it you will be first to know. I take it the pickup volume is balanced due to Fenders handywork ?
 9. Hi , I have seen this Bass , it has a P/J Pickup configuration. Now what intrigues me is that the bass has a Quarterpounder P Pickup and a Fender noiseless jazz pickup in the bridge position. Does this work? I would think that the Quarterpounder would overpower the Jazz pickup
 10.
As you say Nik, it was delivered safe and sound and no need to test out insurance liability, so a happy customer; just like I was with Interparcel. However, can you put hand on heart and say that you'd send a £500-£1000+ fragile instrument like a bass without knowing full well that you'd be covered? Even with insurance I always have a bit of a sleepless night or two if I sent anything through a courier, I couldn't even begin to imagine what I'd be like if I wasn't insured or I wasn't 100% clear on the T&C of the insurance. Ideally I'd like to hear from people who've had to make claims against couriers, as that's the real test of any insurance cover... then again even if someone was paid full compensation for a claim would I want to use the courier after they'd trashed someone else's gear
I deal with citylink on a daily basis and have had to put in many claims , pm me if you want more info.

 14.
My tone comes from: NS-Design CR5M Little Mark II amp Schroeder 1212L (& My fingers ) Everything seemed to fall into place when I got the Mark bass & Schroeder. These are the most expensive bass, amp & cab I've owned so I guess while expensive doesn't necessarily sound that much better, sometimes it certainly is. I'm also really loving the sound of my '71 musicmaster with this rig which in its day was a very cheap bass.
I used to own a musicmaster, fantastic sounding bass , very deep and warm , I regret ever parting with it
 15.
(note: I wrote this review about 8 months ago, and I still stand by it.) Hi all My search for replacement pickups for my '73 J has come to an extremely successful conclusion. I've had this bass for nearly a year, and I love it dearly. However, the lack of definition on the E string has always bothered me a bit, which I put down to the non-original pickups of questionable origin. The bridge pup was a bit weak, as was one of the poles on the neck pup. When it came to swapping them out, I liked the idea of something slightly overwound, and I considered the likes of Fender's 60s CS, Fralin, Aero, etc. While I was looking into this, someone suggested I have a chat with Andy at Wizard Pickups in Scotland. I believe Andy used to work for Kent Armstrong, and he started his own venture building and rewinding pickups when Kent moved back to the US. I had a look at his website, and saw he had two 'stock' J offerings - the traditionally vintage 64s and the dirtier, overwound 84s. I emailed him and told him I prefer I prefer a warm, smooth tone with lots of bottom end and not too much in the way of sizzle, but I was concerned the 84s might be a little too dark for my liking. He suggested some custom winds, using the same wire as the 84s, with a few less turns and slightly longer magnets which increases the power, volume and presence. So, I coughed up a perfectly reasonable £70 (no extra charge for custom winds) and waited... ...for a day! I placed the order on Thursday afternoon, and they arrived via registered post on Saturday morning. They're well packed in a funky little box, with black and white cloth wires. I took them to my tech chap, who dropped them in (I'm an idiot with a soldering iron) and took it to a gig last night. What a result! My J has been pushed into a different league. I'm a P-nut at heart, but my J now has an incredible thumpy punch with the neck solo'd. Open both pups up, and it's warm, smooth and growly. Every note is perfectly defined and even, right down to the E. It was the most fun I've had at a gig for a long time. I can't recommend them enough, and as they cost significantly less than most of the alternatives out there, UK or EU-based folks looking for new pups should definitely have a chat with Andy to see what he can offer. He's made an old, tired Jazz (and it's owner) very happy! Wizard Pickups
Sound like good pickups , I am looking to swap out my Quarter Pounders as they have practically no mid range , may try these

TNT and UPS on the other hand I have nothing but praise for but Citylink are shockingly bad , its a wonder they are still in business.

 23.
I put this bass together from a body and hardware I bought from Ebay and a left-handed Encore P-bass neck I part exchanged with a mate of mine. I 'reliced' the body and hardware (and the beer-label sticker), sanded the back of the neck to get rid of the high gloss and wired it up with a Artec passive tone eq pot. It's perfect for gigging with coz I don't care if it gets damaged. The action's high to accomodate the fret buzz probs I had and it works for me coz I really hammer the strings on stage (causing many blisters!!!) Also put a piece of walnut-veneered mdf on as a 'ramp' where I play coz when I rooted my thumb on the 'skinny' pickup I kept falling off and when rooted on the string above the one I was playing it used to keep falling through!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Basically it's a rough piece of crap but I love the old girl !!!
Very nice looking bass , love the P Neck on the Jazz body. You should have a setup done on that bass and have some Dimarzios installed instead of the cheapo ebay p/ups. I think you could really turn that into a nice bass with a small amount of work
 24.
I've used the Picato's - didn't think they were that bad. Just a very traditional flat. 25. Register to disable this ad Hi, I am after some opinions please. I have sd quarter pounders on my p bass special. I have been feeling for a while that although the pups provide plenty of bass I would really like to have a more midrangey snarly type of sound. I am thinking of swapping out the j bridge pickup for a SJB-2 hot for jazz bass pickup as I like the idea of having the quarter pounder p for a deep bass sound and dialing in the SJB-2 bridge pickup to add snarl. Anybody done this? Do you think this will be a good idea , what are the SJB-2 pickups like, I thank you in advance for any comments or suggestions you may have.
