Pickup wise im not sure whether theres any point. a lot of different views on the same thing.chris from Bass Centre in London told me that the only reason i should change the pup would be to level the output between strings and the best way is SD MM pickup. apparently its the same thing tonally but less noisy and has a bar magnet at the bottom to account for the change in string volume.
MM still do the 2 band, its not just on older models. FWIW I dont rate the SD MM pickups over the stock MM pickup. There are two types, one al-ni-co and the ceramic wit the bar magnet. The bar magnet doesnt even the volume, its the pole piece height that does that so youve been misinformed there. The Nordstrand is much clearer than stock MM or SD with better low end too. As for the EQ the 2 band is very simple compared to the 3 band baxendall filter. IMHO you cant get a vintage Edwards/Lally tone from a 3 band. -
Knew there had to be a fundamental flaw somewhere else you would already be able buy such a thing! Better move on to my next inventive idea, I'll get one that works eventually!
You can get such a thing, its called a Powerbreak or power soak and its used by guitarists who want to run amps at full tilt to get overdriven valves at much lower volume.
Why, is the pup parallel by default? Its not very bassy and with a pick I cant really get that Fugazi sound or even Breeders. The sound of Louis Johnson and Benard Edwards are far from reach too. A great bass though with a lot of presence and I do intend to keep it. just wondering what I can do with it....
Standard SR4 pickup wiring is paralel. IS it the 3 band or 2 band model? Joe Lally of Fugazi used a 2 band so did Bernard Edwards and they sound very different to the 3 band. Jo Wiggs of Breeders and Perfect Disaster used Precicsions and Rickenbackers AFAIR. The John East BTB MM is same response as the 2 band and if you add a swepable mid module you can add or scoop all the guts you want -
Hi there, Just some ideas. Heres the deal Im trying to sell all my basses bar one. the stingray. 2006 with all the stock stuff. I owned a fender Pj with EMGS which I loved, Warwick Streamer stage I which hopefully is going to Sheffield soon. I need the cash and relocation will become easier with one bass. So, I need ideas from you guys. and clips....
You can rewire the pickup easily to give series and singlecoil sounds thru a DPTT switch? Also instal an East BTB MM and sweepable midrange module to make it even more versatile. Nordstrand pickup is worth looking at as well. -
The best thing to do if you want more power and volume is just get another speaker cabinet.
Or get a more efficient speaker.
From what I understand, when using one 8ohm cab with my 4ohm amp I'm not getting the full whack from my amp, right? Well whats to stop me making up a little board with a simple RCL circuit with the other 8ohms on it and pluging it into the other speaker port? I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron but audio stuff is just past my limited electronic theory!
Pointless. Half your power would get lost in the dummy load and youd need some heavy duty components to build a losd capable of handling that much power. You would probably lose output power as well as most amps put out more than half their rated power at 4 ohms when connected to a 8 ohm load. If you connect a dummy load it would be split 50/50 between speaker and dummy.
Cheers Spartacus (there's a thread on here somewhere in which quite a few BCers claim that they're also Spartacus).
Accept no subsitutes
I'm assuming that the 'preamp common' is where the black wires would go when connecting a normal J-PUP to a J-Retro?
Yeh Chris, the black wires are pickup grounds and go to the normal pickup connections, and the greys I think are the shields and go to the ground conection on the jack.
-
What does 'burping' sound like?
-
From the nordstrand site, "All single coils and split coils - the black wire is ground and the white wire is hot. The gray wire also goes to ground unless a buffered input preamp is used like an Audere or an East, in which case the black wire goes into the preamp common and the gray wire goes to ground." So youre right.
so which bit/where abouts is the op-amp? I've googled it and i was merely informed it was a basic preamp...does this mean its the first stage of the EBMM pre? Will this only be a concern if I don't change both the pickup and preamp?
The SR5 pickup has 3 coils including a dummy for humcanceling. The SR% preamp and switch includes circuitry that selects buffers and balances the coils to match volumes and stay hum free. So if you lose the preamp youll have to rewire the pickup and replace the switch to keep the pickup selections. If you change both pickup and preamp youll stilll have to replace the switch to keep pickup selection because its an intergral part of the preamp circuit. Usual way to do that is with a 3way on/on/on double pole triple throw switch which will leave your pickgard with a slotted hole unless you do what obbm suggests and somehow get the switch and buffered front end of the preamp replicated.

The Berlins got a bigger speaker and cabinet volume so will probbaly sound louder and deeper. The amp stage is exactly the same in both amps. 15"s tend to sound deeper than 12"s, 12"s tend to sound more middly and biting. Ive used your 121 in jam nights and it didnt cut it on its own. Put it on a chair to hear it better and you lose the boundry reinforcement from coupling with the floor. Ive got the 102P which is a tiltback to help with hearing it but still needs an external cab to get some proper low end and projection and gets lost with a loud drummer and 2 gits.
-
it keeps going on the master and is more linear and less on/off but is still a bit "quieter" than a lot of amps the same rating. I think thats maybe because Eden say it still has 3dB headroom at full volume so its like its restricted to maintain that heardoom? You need to set the gain high to get best out of it though.
I thought it was mostly used to get through the mix when playing in a band
You need the mids to cut through in a band situation. Presence is usually tuned to add sparkle and you need good speakers to reprosuce it properly. Most bassists will never need it unless you like a really bright slappy sound.
-
Presence is usually high treble, used to be part of the feedback loop between power amp and preamp on valve amps but got twisted over the years to mean the hissy high end estuff
Take any player you dig from any genre and if they're really great musicians I'm sure you would be able to tell it's them no matter what instrument they're playing. Easy,
Then ill stick to my Argos Encore Signature Tone and wait to sell the house before I worry about phoneing Mr. Fodera. Easy
And if Fender didn't cut some corners on the hardware it'd probably be like £1000 or more.
Fender still charge £1000+ on basses with cut corners The Jag is still about £600 in the UK. How does it all work out? Did you change the active electronics cos I thought they would have been a very weak link.
A newly signed up BCer (like yesterday) based in Latvia contacted me last night enquiring about the GT6B I have for sale on here. In theory I have no major objection with shipping it to him, or anywhere else in the EU. He is aware of the extra costs involved (still looking at actual prices), obviously I'll receive payment before shipping and I'll make sure there is adequate insurance. I see many examples of people who won't ship abroad. What are the pitfalls? What are your experiences? Rich.
I work for a shipping company and we have lots of arguements with customers who expect to ship high value high risk items oversease for a tenner. The fact is that to properly insure your goods and ship them at reasonable cost we have to accept liability for subcontract delivery and collection services at your end and at the buyers end and in transfer which works out expensive for stuff which can be damaged easily. Cost is one 1 issue bit you need to make sure you trust the buyer first as theres a big potential for fraud and you cant necesarily check the bueyrs credentials 1st or chase him down if hes a scammer. Make sure he pays by bank transfer or paypal with confirmed address and only ship to the confirmed address. PS Im not saying your buyer is a scammer but if he mentions sending company cheque or western union then be a bit worried
This question has been asked before and never had a satisfactory answer....in fact,...as far as I know, never had an answer,...so can those that describe Ashdown cabs as sounding wooly....describe "wooly",....c'mon surely you know what you mean, I don't, so enlighten me. (and others)
Indistinct midrange and a low end that isnt "tight", tends to distort and compress when not pushed that far and loses any dynamics. Thats my experience of ABM and MAG stuff but my superfly gives a better defined and clearer sound from top to bottom.
At my local bass shop there's a Eden Nemesis 650 for sale with a 2x10" & 1x15" cab (not sure which, but also Eden). I obviously am going to try it out before I buy it, but I was hoping if there are people around with experience with these amps.
Can't comment on the cabs but used to own the same head. It's very flexible and can go from being very clean but still warm through to a nice valvey emulation which is quite convincing and better than the same sort of emulation on EBS amps. The built-in limiter is a bit annoying and takes some time to get use to as its associated with the gain control. Its only 400w at 4 ohm though, built very well but a bit heavy. Footswitch for Enhance control is very useful to get instant scoop tone.
