my notes on yours where that there was too much reverb on vocal , undisdiguished bass , not muddy but no real ID of the DB tone ( I think most were like that though) ,and the snare seemed a bit thin , overall good.
I think that is a fair assessment. I didn't really think I'd over verbed the vocal....I did however try to get it it right to the front of the mix. I agree on the lack of DB tone....I found eqing this tricky - I really wanted to get the upright vibe but found the bass difficult to get loud enough in my mix - bizarre Yes I knew as soon as I listened back to the mix after it was uploaded that I had taken too much bottom out of the snare. My snare was heavily processed with a transient shaper to try and put some thwack into it - I felt the original had no life.In the process I obviously concentrated on the highs too much and this thinned the snare. Another problem with the snare I found was that there was a lot of snare rattle (I think) on the sidestick in the intro - I ended up cutting this to a different track and gating and eqing it totally differently. I used sidechained gates on both the fiddle, the banjo, the vocal and a guitar/mandolin submix in an effort to get them all to interact, bringing the dominant melody element to the front of the mix as necessary - I'd like to think that this worked well - it was way easier than automating everything on envelopes. I separated each of these elements with eq cuts and stereo postioning too so that they would sit together if they played simultaneously. I double tracked the BVs and panned them L/R to widen the vocal stage. I really struggled with the overheads on the drums. They had too much hihat in them and the cymbals sounded very thin and weak. Just some notes on what I remember - if anyone wants to know more then I will examine the project file later...
It is time for you all to pull my mix apart if you like , I really thought I did OK , but it obviously wasnt to taste.
What he said....

I had a Triumph Spitfire for years and managed to get a 1x15 cab, a carlsbro head and my bass in it....(the bass was actually in a hard case bungeed to a boot rack ) oh and after a while I took the passenger seat out so the cab was a bit more stable....but i managed, for 9 years like that!!!

I split up - the start of the breakdown seems to have coincided with the reformation of the band which was not operating when we met.....a correllation?

What do you do? When you don't feel like practicing?

Rapture @ £14.99 is a good buy.....that's a nice synth if you like that sort of thing

I have been a long time Sonar user. v5 v6 v7 v8.5 X1 and X2.......so I have DimPro (multiple licences - they throw it in with X1 & X2) - it is a good plug but I don't find the libraries particularly inventive/realistic/versatile....I tend to use Kontakt for anything DimPro would have been used for.

Is that neck pickup rout going to fit a 5 string P pickup? It looks like the 4 stringer fits but surely you will fit a 5 stringer? Aren't they longer?
Here's my latest purchase - a 2012 American Standard Precision - a Factory Short Run model. Very pleased with it & many thanks to Barrie at Bass Gear for his assistance with the purchase.
the scratchplate looks very close to the bottom edge, particularly on the lower horn, is that supposed to be like that?
I had a horrible experience there. The shop is run by someone with the manner of an uptight prefect. He refused to let me try out basses because 'they were too expensive' said I was 'wasting my time' because I wanted to try out an amp but hadn't brought my bass. When I mentioned I was still using an old H/H amp he looked down his nose at me and obviously didn't consider me a proper customer. I was en route from Wales to London and diverted to pay a visit. Never again.
This surprises me. I've been to bass direct twice now and both times I have been made to feel very welcome by Mark, free to play with any of the toys I choose. The first time I went I think I only spent around £15, was on my motorbike, in full leathers but still felt taken seriously as a potential customer.

http://www.npr.org/event/music/185548038/the-national-falling-for-graceless?sc=fb&cc=fmp The National's new album.....so how do they make a trombone sound like a pedal steel guitar??? Americans can rhyme more words with 'vase' than we can...
John Hall should go after Encores too... afterall, they sound sh*t too... so they've obviously copied Rickenbacker.
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but to go to such lengths to perfect every detail is closer to stalking.

MIA has its issues too. I bought a Fender Original Precision Bass pickup - it clearly states Made in USA on the box and yet i had to resolder one of the pickup wires to the shielding plate to get it to work.

I wonder what Mr Hall is doing about these: http://www.musicstore.de/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/MusicStore-MusicStoreShop-Site/de_DE/-/EUR/ViewParametricSearch-SimpleOfferSearch?SearchParameter=%26%40QueryTerm%3D*%26CategoryUUIDLevelX%252F6OTVqHzpu7YAAAEZ63gtK5qL%252FsUPVqHzpVKQAAAEZOApFop40%3DHhnVqHzpNRgAAAEZwwlFop40%26CategoryUUIDLevelX%252F6OTVqHzpu7YAAAEZ63gtK5qL%3DsUPVqHzpVKQAAAEZOApFop40%26CategoryUUIDLevelX%3D6OTVqHzpu7YAAAEZ63gtK5qL%26ManufacturerName%3DCareer
Another option is the Gotoh 201 but I have read that getting a low action might be difficult?
I shall second that. I have a Gotoh 201 on my P/J. the saddles are REALLY fat and with the saddles wound fully down, even after shimming my neck, the action is still a little high - and I like quite a high action!!!! The other thing about it is if you are used to damping using the side of your palm on the bridge then the saddle height adjusting screws are VERY sharp on the Gotoh 201 and if you do have the saddles all the way down on the deck then you may draw blood...I did.
The preferred outcome is that I sell the bass quickly. This would be achievable if BC lifted the obligatory payment.
I think you'll find that no matter how much you plead that that is not going to happen.....

What I want to learn from this exercise most is how to get the best out of the drums. The demos I make and the previous recording I have done have, for the last few years, all been done with the same kit - a specific custom kit in Superior drummer which uses (albeit professionally recorded) samples of the exact bits of kit our drummer uses). I know how that sounds, how the rest of the band want it to sound and how to make it sound that way etc etc..... Using a new source I find drums really really tough...the drums are by far the weakest element of my mix. If I understood the techniques employed by some of the others I feel sure my mixing could improve.... So, those of you who seem to be able to nail the drums month in month out, please reveal how you do it.
I want to come play at your house!
I am in the process of converting what was marketed by the estate agent as the dining room into my music room. It adjoins the sitting room and the playroom. It currently houses a huge QuikLok desk with platforms for the Rokits. amd my yamaha 10/2 mini mixer. My Roland D10 keyboard andf my behringer BCR2000 midi controller sit on the desk. A 10U rack space housing a JP8080, an Alesis compressor, a MOTO MTPAV midi distro and a HiFi amp, the speakers for which are on pillar stands. There is a sofa and a Marshall fridge in there.too and my basses and guitar on stands....I do have kids that come to stay with me every other weekend and they have a playroom in the next room which I use as a vocal booth, running the mic cable under the door. As far as sound 'deadening' is concerned, there are heavy curtains draped on 3 of the 4 walls and carpet on the floor - not ideal but eliminates a lot of reflections..........the playroom is more lively with a hard floor and walls so has some reverb but not so much as a bathroom! All the gear, no idea me If I ever come to sell the house it will be a bastard to market as it no longer feels big enough to be a dining room! Ha Ha
I guess that's symptomatic of how a lot of people listen to music these days. I only get chance to crank up the home hifi at weekends myself, so I'm certain among the headphone brigade.
I am the opposite. I live alone, so there's nobody to get upset and almost everything is done on speakers. Mixing and judging... i only use the phones very rarely.......
Good question Si. I always test my own mixes using:

Studio cans (AKG K240 MKII Semi Open). Not the best cans by any means, but I know them very well and do 99% of my mixing and listening on them.
Home hifi (old Tannoy speakers with a Cyrus amp, all 20 years old now! Adds lots of low end warmth so nowhere near a flat sound, but allows me to shift some air and check for issues at loud volume).
Bedroom hifi (some 'all in one' combo thingy that Mrs Skol refuses to throw out. Skews the sounds all over the place! If a mix sounds good on this, it sounds good on most things).
Phone ear buds (iPhone 5 jobbies).
Phone speaker (the most brutal test of all!).
Car stereo (if I can be arsed burning the mix to disc).
...when listening to mixes as part of this competition, I nearly always just use my AKG cans. Simply because they're the source I know and trust the most. PS: I've still yet to vote...
For me I listen back to the mixes using the same playback systems that I use when mixing: 1) The KRK Rokit6 monitors connected to the RME HDSP9632 in my studio PC 2) The Cambridge Audio hifi amp with Eltax speakers connected to the M-Audio 2496 soundcard in my studio PC 3) My Beyer DT-231 headphones via the Cambridge amp and m-Audio 2496 4) The Logic3 speakers connected to my office laptop I will also check my mix, if I can be bothered, on the NAD with KEF speakers stereo in the lounge and through the Bose system in the car. I find my headphones hide a multitude of sins and mixes can sound very different from the phones to the Rokits. Even switching from phones to speakers through the same amp I can notice a huge difference. I do think most of my listening environments tend to colour the sound in their own way - it is frightfully difficult to balance to allow for the whims of all the systems.
