2.
In a nutshell this is the truth
I'm agreeing with this one If I had to record with one bass and overdub with the other I would have no problem. I found far less difference in these two clips than I would expect in a string change. And if I could change my earlier position I would change it to there is a stingray sound but you don't need a stingray to get it.
 3.
It's always a pleasure to meet another OLP connoisseur
It's a great one after much modding. http://damprabbit.com/Basses/olp-mm3.html Now it has blue fretlight LEDs on it to make it a killer stage bass.
 4.
With 19 to 32 votes, the consensus of the forum was... drum roll please.... CORRECT!! The votes were already swinging the right way before I put up the second clip. IMO that shows that whatever some people are saying, it's still a recognisable tone even with the "wrong" settings and pickup material when compared to another H equipped bass when I made no other attempt to make them sound similar.
37% wrong is not proof there is a stingray sound. Only 13 more of the 51 people were right than wrong. We could have all flipped coins and proved the same thing.
 5.
No.....Black is louder.Red is faster.
My bad
 6.
He uses a Tobias on the Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe live DVD too.
I need to check that out, I heard he only had a few days notice for that gig which he spent writing out all the parts. As much of a douchebag as he can be I think it's hard to argue he is also extremely skilled and knowledgable.
 7.
is why i've got a black bridge....I wanted a dark sound!!
You're joking of course but when it comes to wood many people use the color to describe the tone. Maple is bright, ebony is dark, walnut has more mids and is warmer. Red guitars are louder than blue ones. Our eyes and other senses and our moods play a larger part in our perceptions than most are willing to admit.
 8.
A Stingray, similarly, can be made to sound a bit "chamaleonic" in the mix... but there is a particular sound that is so typical of it that when you hear it you go "THAT is a Stingray". It doesn't mean you can recognise a Stingray in every situation, only that the Stingray is able to produce a particular sound that is very characteristic, even diagnostic, and it's used widely enough that it becomes known as "the Stingray sound". or something like that.
That's a much more realistic claim. Though I've found that Stingray sound can be reproduced in non MM instruments. Maybe back in 1980 when the options were more limited there wasn't anything on the market that could nail the tone but now there are many builders using the MM recipe and that gets the same tone to my ears. My SUB and OLP can both nail a Stingray sound yet they're both passive but real MM's. To me that removes the preamp as a necessary part of the tone.
 9.
It's surprising how the usual stance of "a stingray's a one trick pony but nothing else sounds like it" suddenly has a page of stipulations attached once it gets put to the test.
It's not just Stingrays as Fender, Sadowsky, Fodera, Alembic, Wal, Rickenbacker, Smith, Coppola and a million others all have overzealous fans defending their one true tone as unique and special even though individual examples of the same brand sound different. The page of stipulations that comes up when a test is suggested is very similar to the response of other paranormal claims. You can read about this kind of thing at http://www.randi.org/site/index.php/1m-challenge.html
 10.
Saying a stock stingray doesn't sound like a stingray is daft IMO.
Daft but understandable.
 11.
While we have seasoned players on this site telling me they can hear the difference an Alleva paddle headstock makes yet AFAIK Jimmy hasnt made a pair of identicle basses to compare them A-B Id say we are safe from riddicule for now (just)
I heard one guy on talkbass argue he could hear gold versus chrome hardware I've found if you can see a difference someone can hear it. Take away the visual cues and then people can't tell series from parallel, single coil from humbucker, alnico from ceramic etc...
 12.
Do you really think people commenting on the difference between a single coil ceramic pickup and an Alnico Humbucker is unfair? I dont.
I never said unfair, just revealing
 13.
I am chuckling a little at the discussion about what the pickup might be,and how it needs to heard soloed etc.....I suppose it saves face a little more than just saying that you can't actually tell which bass is which.
My thoughts too. All the questions asking for hints about things that we are supposed to be able to hear Experts that haven't offered a guess will likely be confirming they knew all along once the answers are posted if this test follows the usual patterns. The questions are proving the point more than the test is. I would get rid of the amp modeling as that makes it no longer sound normal. I don't hear Stingray in either clip.
 14.
Should have got them to do his lip whilst they had the gear out...
And then work on the $2 haircut.
 15.
His bass used to sound great when he has that old Fender hybrid but his Peavey and Dean basses both sounded thin as a rake and lacking in ovetones.
A bit of trivia... the bass used on Champion was a Tobias loaned to him for the sessions. Around the same time Tobias also made a new neck for his old blonde Pbass and hot rodded a Yamaha he had including shaving the neck.
 16.
I reckon you'd need to drink an astonishing amount to want to **** a bear!
Even more if the bear is initiating the action.
 17. My tastes change daily. I have Ray tones and P & J sounds and others and I just grab what I'm in the mood for that day. I could never be satisfied sounding the same everytime I played.
 18.
Ironically, the first time I ever heard Berlin was on Bruford's "Feels good to me" album. I actually thought it was Jaco. Seriously.
Back in 1985 I had the opportunity to ask Jeff if he played any fretless on the album. He said there may have been a fretless lying around the studio that got played a bit. He also slaps on that album and in a video with Kazumi Watanabe. I think Jeff has problems communicating, he just doesn't know how to voice his opinions in a way that would be better received. And he's a bit of a prick
 19.
Amusing to me was a BGM article where a bass was reviewed by one of the brands endorsing players. Unsurprisingly not a bad word was said against it, nor a declaration of authors links to the brand.
With few rare exceptions all reviews are paid advertising. Notice how often the reviewed gear will have an ad in the same issue. If you don't buy the advertising you don't get a review printed. Many reviews are simple rewrites of press releases.
 20.
Its more often than not an 'artist deal' where the manufacturer is selling direct to the player at about trade price. They still get paid the same for their gear as it's the retailers fee that's left of the price the player pays.
I've seen so many endorsement deals that are just discounts still above wholesale that I've formed the opinion that companies know that if you call someone an endorser they are more likely to buy your stuff for the bragging rights. I think if it aint free it's just a sale with a fancy name.
 21. I love his playing, check out the bass solo on this one
 22. I've found for me thinner strings give me more useable neck. Too thick and the tone starts falling off after about the 5th fret. YMMV
 23.
I`d like to play/hear the P. Looks very interesting with those double J pickups.
That's the same layout as a Smith, positions look similar enough that it may sound like one too.
 24.
I don't know...it's not the first time Fender have used the double P pickup, and Leland Sklar's old Charvel/Fender hybrid was a double P aswell.
Lot of double P's hidden in soapbars also. All the old Tobias basses for one.
 25.
Just so you can see the full extent of my problems here....
I'd be tempted to put that on eBay with words like super relic tone and see if someone buys it.
