2.
secondly I'm no scientist but the greater neck contact/body mass against the neck must contribute to the tone
While I can't argue the science couldn't it contribute something bad to the tone? Or something you don't like?

 4.
yep for sure.. but do you think it matters.. not saying either way but does it make a bad bass?
Looks like the answer is yes from this response
i very much doubt USA Lakland would miss a thing like this.. in fact i would bet on it..
5.
i think you will find its the actual pickup that is tricking your eye, and not the line up of the pickups... i very much doubt USA Lakland would miss a thing like this.. in fact i would bet on it..
There's many pictures in that thread and they all show a serious misalignment that's more pronounced at the bridge which implies it's the bridge in the wrong place. Would you believe that Lakland has lost money from day one and never made a profit?
 6.
Cant people just accept that its a different shape that some people just dig? The alone in a bedroom with a looper comment made me chuckle.. because thats exactly what i do.. with a Singlecut.. But why should a sit on my own thudding away on the E string when i do that in various bands almost every night of the week? Theres been so many anti soloing/slapping/singlecutsoloslapping vibes on here recently.. and now it seems we are no longer safe from judgement in our own bedrooms! My honest answer is that my singlecut bass is very comfortable, very resonant, and very very stable in the old neck department. It plays like a dream on a strap or sat down. Jon Shuker has done a really good job with it. But then again, these are all qualities i have found in other basses (from p's to J's to Sei's blah blah) but right now, i'm digging the singlecut, so i'm going to defend it.. the same way i would defend a silly haircut that i thought was top.
You could also ask why those who use single cuts just can't accept some people don't like them and wonder why they feel a need to defend them. Like 7 strings or Bongo's. There is no place on earth you are safe from judgement, just as you judged me in your post. What you can do is be confident in your choice and then not have the need to defend it against other opinions.
 7.
Considering the relatively small numbers produced, I've always wondered why there are so many USA PRS's for sale out there.
I thought they made those by the bazillions. Their NAMM booth is always packed and some of the stores out here will have dozens on the walls.
 8.
I didn't realise they were in fashion. After all, I've never seen one being used live on stage. Perhaps I need to get out more.
I've seen Tony Grey, Matt Garrison and Richard Bona use them onstage. It was the fad for a while in the US among the wannabees. Many of the small boutique builders came out with single cuts around the same time and they made some good money from the bedroom warriors.
 9.
So is it just me that thinks the G string is inbound from the edge of the fingerboard in relation to the E string? It could be the camera angle but I'm fairly certain it is an imbalance in neck/string alignment.
Look at how badly it aligns to the bridge pickup!!! It has a serious reverse Fender offset.
 10.
35" Wide! I can't really tell the difference between 34 and 35 when playing it usually comes up ten minutes into playing one from the owner rather than the feel. I think some people get the impression the inch extra is all at the first fret, In reality the position of the body on your knee when sitting will change it more if like me you shuffle around when practicing.
Maybe a comma would have helped I've been able to tell 35" from the feel so far and I don't like what it does to the tone from the extra tension especially as you go up the neck.
 11. Anthony Jackson was a big early promoter of the recent single cuts claiming it has a better tone, I doubt it. Personally I hope the fad is over. The single cut predates the double cutaway in guitar design, those calling it revolutionary have likely never heard of the acoustic guitar. While I'm sure there are examples to the contrary when I see a single cut it's usually plugged into a looper and played by someone who plays alone and without an audience.
 12. A few months ago I played a gig across the street from a Cake concert.
 13. Well that does totally change the look. More like the Decade model and even farther from the Jazz. Nice looking but I prefer the classic looks. I wish the DJ 5 wasn't a 35" wide neck as I love the body shape.
 14.
If I was ever going to buy a boutique bass I always thought that it might be a Fodera, but after reading this thread I would definitely consider a Ken Smith…!
In the old days they were both built by one shop I forget who built whose but those 2 were closely tied once.
 15.
If anything - this thread has intrigued me about KT basses.
KT? Did you mean KS?
 16.
Seven
Heck, I can do seven by myself.
 17.
What we're left with VGS's incorrect string-gauge barney. And once the dust settled, Ken sent another set of strings. Not ideal, tbh, but not life-threatening either.
It was a large order of strings for a business, not just a single set. As I posted earlier the mistake is totally forgivable. Calling me stupid was not. Many guitar related businesses are run by people with no businesses sense and orders from NAMM were often wrong. My order for gig bags from Levys for example where they sent me straps instead and argued that was cool.
 18.
Haha not at this point in my life, I have a bass addiction to fund.
They are fun to drive, I get the same thrill that some would playing a pre CBS Fender. Even though it doesn't compare to a nice new Honda it's a blast to stomp the pedal and feel 8 German pistons going at it.
 19.
Used to ship VWs from there when the exchange rate was good, the answer is about $1200 and if it over 25 years 5% duty.
Well let me know if you're interested Though I have to let you know they've been a mechanics dream over the years, lots of time in the shop.
 20.
Either way wouldn't it be easier to source it locally?
It would be easier to replace the whole preamp
 21.
Gee, Electronic Shielding Paint. Please read carefully. I have been on this now for 4 hours. Where can I send the Bill!
There's the Ken we all know and love. I'm afraid I have to let you know that none of us get paid for posting here and all posts are for free.
Lacquer is a has-mat material as well. Anything with solvents. If something breaks or spills and you didn't do it right, expect some type of Government visit at the least.
UPS ships lacquer without needing special trucks. You were the one that said you use some special toxic formula, I'm just wondering how toxic is it? Gee, Please read carefully
 22.
I did hear that about the Mercs, wouldn't mind an old SL.
I have a friend selling a 560 and a 580. I wonder what shipping would be from California?
 23.
I'm sorry your order got messed up.
That's almost looks like an apology except it appears to be deflecting responsibility. Any comment on yelling at me and calling me stupid for your mistake? You messing up an order is trivial and easy to fix, not taking responsibility for it and calling me names is the real pathetic part.
 24.
Also, there was always a HazMat shipping charge (hazardous materials) for this paint and had to be sent by special truck, NOT UPS.
What kind of unusual toxins are in the Ken Smith bass process that requires special trucks?
 25.
Not wanting to derail things but I thought th Monster Cable, slightly oversized plugs was well known? In fact Phil Jones amps used to (still?)void the warranty if you used a Monster cable, because of this.
So many well known things in music Very few with actual measurements and specs. From what I've seen most people don't even understand the issue as most claims say the shaft is bigger on the monster (have fun quoting that out of context). Nowadays the oversized part referred to is often the tip. Measuring a handful myself with dial calipers I found the range for monster was the same as all the others. Even if I did believe that a thousandth of an inch larger tip will destroy a spring as it passes over it I'd have to discount the possibility of adding slight pressure to the side of the jack during insertion (works well with previous quote) can cause the spring to bottom out regardless of the tip size. Finding a manufacturer who will jump on this to avoid paying warranty claims for using standard equipment does not surprise me.
