1.
I see he lost the rubbish bridge and rearranged the pickups when he got his custom there. Good call.
Notice that he has the much derided pickup cover too - even though it's not actually covering a pickup but sits between the rear two. I bet Rickenbacker weren't impressed with the "Rickenbastard" truss rod cover though...
 2. I'm putting my trusty old P bass up for sale. It's an all original, unmodified 1979 USA Fender Precision in the iconic black body, black scratchplate, maple neck configuration as championed by the likes of Bruce Foxton, JJ Burnel, etc etc back in the day. Oh yeah, and that Waters bloke from Pink Floyd... It has an S8 serial number but the pot codes date it to 1979. There are absolutely no issues with this bass - the neck is straight, the frets are in great condition, all the electrics work as they should, and there is no rattle or hum. The weight is 5kg (according to our kitchen scales). It has its original chrome bridge cover, thumbrest, and straplocks - the only part that has got lost over the years is the chrome pickup cover. Also included in the sale is the original Fender hard case which although a bit scuffed up on the outside is still fully functional. There are a few small dings on the body and a couple of patches where the chrome of the bridge cover has 'fused' to the paint of the bodywork, but nothing that affects playability. Likewise there is a bit of 'wedding ring wear' and a small chip out of the varnish at the 12th fret (see pic) - but once again nothing that affects playability. Basically it's in great shape for a 32 year old I'm an Englishman abroad - based in Warsaw, Poland - so unfortunately can't invite prospective buyers round for a test-run, a chat, and a cup of tea, but am only willing to ship this bass with a reputable, insurable courier company such as DHL or UPS. Price: £1300 Sorry, no trades. Any questions, feel free to PM. Cheers! *edited for price drop*
 3.
What actually makes a keeper is an emotional attachment.
I agree with this. As an example, 20 years ago I bought my MM Cutlass with money I inherited from my grandfather - I think he would have approved - and consequently for me it is definitely a keeper.
 4. I think Clarky's going to need a page or two just to himself once he spots this thread...
 5.
True. No one who's really famous plays bass. Like -say - Barack Obama, Jackie Chan or Bill Tarmey.
*ahem* Keanu Reeves....
 6. So, much like any other profession where you are freelance, basically. Interesting. EDIT: my comment was aimed at Doddy's response, not Dropzone's btw...
 7.
The last few have seen me play upright bass at times with banjo, mandolin, pedal steel & fiddle.
Sometimes the transition from rock isn't such a good idea though...
 8. Anyways, back on topic: So it boils down to this: if you're a pro, you should never say no. If you play music for fun, you can do what you like.
 9.
Cool! Page two and we're almost on to Nazis already!!
For the record, the Lemster says he is not a Nazi: "They just had the best uniforms. I always say that if the Israeli army had the best uniforms, I'd collect those."
 10. Fellow Basschatters, An interesting point was raised following on from a light-hearted jest from me on another thread. Let's suppose you are a professional, jobbing bass player who needs to have regular income from your work - would you play with absolutely anyone just to meet that requirement? If you were asked to play with an artist who you have no respect for and whose music is really not your type of thing, would you just grit your teeth and do it for the money OR turn the gig down? In other words, does 'integrity' come into the picture at all? Just curious...
 11.
Paul Turner plays bass JUST FOR THE MONEY for Take That and I've seen him playing for Ronan Keating, so go for it!
Edited that for you! [sub]I'm sure he doesn't really. He does those gigs because he loves the music and to increase his street credibility. [/sub]
 12. My SR5 (as seen on my avatar) is the discontinued teal colour which I really like as it looks different depending on the light: sometimes more blueish, sometimes more greenish, and the grain of the wood shows through nicely. Lovely birds eye maple neck too. Mine is a 1991 model, so it apparently has a slightly different pre-amp to the norm, and alnico pickups I believe. By the way, I'm not thinking of selling it - I'm just stoking up yer GAS a little
 13. Eric Avery & Chris Chaney (both ex-Jane's Addiction) Derek Forbes (ex-Simple Minds)
 14. 50% fingers, 50% plectrum for me - it depends on what's best fits the song.

 16.

I think it's time for a new thread: 'Jaxsn captions'
 17.
Jaxsn's Acting Photo - 9 for the win
He may be a Jaxsn, but he sure isn't Samuel L. ....
 18.
Maybe it's all an elaborate joke, rather like this one: heh heh
Or maybe not so elaborate...
 19.
I will try and find the link. Ok Edit - here it is. http://www.jazzoasis.com/methenyonkennyg.htm Garry
He doesn't mince his words, does he? "But when Kenny G decided that it was appropriate for him to defile the music of the man who is probably the greatest jazz musician that has ever lived by spewing his lame-ass, jive, pseudo bluesy, out-of-tune, noodling, wimped out, f***ed up playing all over one of the great Louis's tracks (even one of his lesser ones), he did something that I would not have imagined possible. He, in one move, through his unbelievably pretentious and calloused musical decision to embark on this most cynical of musical paths, sh*t all over the graves of all the musicians past and present who have risked their lives by going out there on the road for years and years developing their own music inspired by the standards of grace that Louis Armstrong brought to every single note he played over an amazing lifetime as a musician."
 20.
Have you not read the Pat Metheny rant over Kenny G?...Priceless
Kenny G is a GOD! If it wasn't for him supermarkets all over the world would have no background muzak to soothe customers while they shop!
 21.
I clicked the link, read the title then closed the page.
I got a little further than you - I clicked on the featured YouTube link and actually managed to sit through the first 30 seconds of the clip... Then I ran away.
 22.
I just think of the sound Bruce Foxton & JJ Burnell used to get with their 70s Fenders.
Exactly! Also, Derek Forbes of Simple Minds and Mark Bedders of Madness too. I recently had the chance to A/B my late 70s Precision with a new Tony Franklin fretted - which seems to me to be a remake of the late 70s models - and to my ears my old workhorse had a nicer sound, basically with more mids.
 23.
Whats so great about adding a status neck to a stingray?? Sorry for hijacking!
They look farkin' cool!
 24. Just buy the 4 string Classic and be done with it! Whether you want the neck roasted or not is up to you...
 25.
Hi. It's a 1980 (31 years old) "Toaster", with original case and by the look of it, very nice. I can see a price, how much is it? Cheers.
Roughly £475. Funnily enough the seller says it's an '83 model. Is he wrong?
