1. Electric guitars - have they killed the vibe? Actually learning to play - has it killed the vibe? Vans that don't break down - have they killed the vibe?
 2.
It's in the diary (let me know where it is nearer the time )
Will do. BTW, and fortunately, we do have fretted instruments as well.
 3.
Sounds great - when's your next gig? (As one Brightonian to another).
Not until March 2nd 2012. We need to do something about that.
 4.
... And is this at least part of the reason why some bands can now sound a little anodyne, clinical, bland, boring, unexciting, uninspiring, uninteresting and/or mind-bogglingly dull? ...
I don't think so, I think they probably sound 'a little anodyne, clinical, bland, boring, unexciting, uninspiring, uninteresting and/or mind-bogglingly dull' because they are those things. However, there seem to me to be plenty of bands today who aren't anodyne clinical etc. Anyway, something you find mind-bogglingly dull I might well praise rather highly and vice versa.
 5.
I remember seeing Jimi Hendrix band live when Jimi started playing, Noel thinking WTF's he playing & tuning his P on the fly while trying to keep up. Ginger just carried on - smmmokin - regardless. You definitely don't get that today
You've not seen my other band then - guitarist off on one, drummer off on another one, and me wondering what's the key and where's the one. EDIT: BTW, Ginger who?
 6.
No - being in tune is cool
True, but slightly out can sometimes be spicy.
 7.
... now that everyone is playing exactly in tune? ...
You've not seen my band then - fretless bass, slide guitar, lap steel guitar, voices, so digital tuning guarantees nothing.
 8. I've seen this discussed somewhere, probably at the Last Bass Outpost.
 9. That Stax-Volt European tour is captured on Hit the Road Stax (Various Artists) and Live in London and Paris (Otis Redding and the MGs) both of which are cracking albums.
 10.
Just wondering if it's worth moving to Brighton for a more chilled life.
Definitely.
 11. I don't necessarily deny there could be a noticeable difference (although I'm unconvinced) but I think, for example, playing by the bridge or playing by the neck would make a lot more difference.
 12. Hofner parts here if it's any use to you: http://www.projectgu...ofnerparts.html Tuners near bottom of the page.
 13. I've never been able to tell any difference.
 14.
I'm really tempted to go and see this just for the crack, but as I despise tyre kickers, I keep fighting the urge...
Go on, you know you want to. We all want you to.
 15.
There's always this. The Eastwood classic 4. No idea how it plays/sounds - maybe you could let us know.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmSUjhcJaPo
 16.
According to the Gretsch website the currently-available version is the 6073 Electrotone: http://www.soundsliv...ar~ID~15668.asp And at that price I won't be buying one any time soon! PS: Apparently the 6072 is known as 'The Country Gentleman' bass, which sounds like a cock euphemism to me but that's a whole new thread, I suppose. Thank you and good night! Mark
I think the 6073 is 30.5" scale. The 6072 is 34".
 17.
So its a Gretsch 6072 is it? A
Probably.
 18.
Aye, I was tempted
Me too, I often am.
 19.
Now, where can I get one of these and how much will it cost??
http://www.spanjaard...938485ae56e4f7f €2.295
 20. Definitely Gretsch 6072. I like the Paperboy.
 21. If Fender could make a load of money by inventing new basses they would. The truth is that most people who want a Fender want what Fender already produce.
 22. I'm never very keen on maple but, as already said, that maple is not attractive.
 23. ... and +1 on Jimmy Blanton too.
 24.
Absolutely. Scott LaFaro is my favorite DB player and the Village Vanguard albums my favorite jazz albums (I recommend the hard-to-find full unedited album with off-takes, interrupted takes etc). I even have the Kolstein LaFaro bass as my own mini tribute. Amazing player who revolutionised DB playing in only a few short years
Another fan of LaFaro, besides Bassace, Clarky and me, was Jack Casady (of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna) - another somewhat forgotten bassist.
 25.
Ha ha, Dave, that is true. Always been on a budget myself and drinking in clubs keeps either gets you sober or your credit card glowing . But there are some ways around it. Start out by getting your basic supplies at a supermarket (Lidl sells cheap German beer of decent quality), warm up before you go out, always take a traveller, and never be shy about dropping by a kiosk and resupply when you are moving from one place to the other. Besides, if you go some place brown (a pub), they'll sell beer at managble prices too. And some more advertisement for Copenhagen, while we are at it , check out Distortion, it's five days of unbelievable fun.
I had a day in Malmo and that was even more expensive.
