1. 1. How long have you been playing your instrument? - 40 years 2. Do you use an electronic tuner? If yes which model? - Boss TU12, Boss TU2 3. Do you tune by ear or electronic tuner? - BOTH 4. If by ear how do you go about? TUNE THE STRINGS TO EACH OTHER AFTER TUNING ONE TO A FIXED NOTE ON E.G. PIANO. 5. Are you always 100% happy with your tuning? / if not TUNING IS FINE 6. Why are you not happy with your tuning? I AM HAPPY 7. What disturbs you about the electronic tuner NOTHING AT ALL 8. Do you know how to tune by ear? OF COURSE 9. What is your preferred tuning method? TUNER
2. There should be a Squier Classic Vibe reissue of the XII. They'd sell lots of them.
3. ... and Pyramid Gold flats on a guitar ... http://youtu.be/sEa01UgJ6mo
4.
How do Pyramids stack up against TI's and Bella's?
Pyramid Gold Bass Flats are some where between TIs and La Bellas both in tone and tension and with a rather fetching lilac silk at both ends. http://youtu.be/RcDHtBPB85o
5.
... I'm tempted by some of their guitar strings, though. ...
My son uses flatwound strings on his Epiphone Casino and because of the expense he usually uses the much cheaper but Rotosound Top Tapes. However, he has used TI Jazz Swing Flats but prefers the (also expensive) Pyramid Gold Flats.

7. Thank you too. It's looking like JJs then.
8.
Does anyone have any experience of Tis versus LaBella flats? I have a set of normal LaBella flats on my fretless SUB 'Ray and a set of black nylon ones on my Rob Allen. I like both fine but I'm looking to put flats on my GWB35 and, having never tried TIs, don't want to immediately just go with what I know. I would just try some, but these puppies are not the cheapest things out there.
La Bellas are relatively higher tension to TIs relatively much lower tension. La Bellas are thumpier, TIs are more middy. Having said that you can get a wide range of tones from both.
9. I'm surprised anyone would think that instrumental section to be a bass solo. Anyway, I still liked it.
10. I like them a lot. Wasn't Michigan Avenue where Chess records was based?
11.
Is Dan out of the building process now.?
Dan Lakin Basses is Dan's new business: http://www.dlakinbasses.com
12.
The dual J looks like the old scheff model could yield some nice tones with the pick up placement
The pickup placement does look very close to the Scheff model. If you popped in a couple of Kent Armstrong lipsticks then would it be a Scheff without a preamp?
13. We understand that matched sets is good but if I want a quadset of EL84s and three ECC83s (one hi-grade and two standard) and the guitarist concerned likes a clean sound what manufacturer should we be buying? Thank you. Laney manual here: http://www.laney.co.uk/uploads/6e5d65fafa037bb79a8cc5080ce11fa6.pdf
14. The EQ you need is dependent on the room you are in and the sound of the other musicians, I have had a Mesa Walkabout for about four yesrs and the parametrics almost always remain flat,
15. You might try Pyramid Gold flats.
16. The youtube link in the OP was no longer working but it's now replaced with a working link.
17. Ernie Ball buys Music Man in 1984.
18. Deacon is the first bassist I can remember seeing with a Musicman, way before Ernie Ball of course. Probably about 1976-77.
19.
My initial thought was, the guy that wrote the ad is new to gigging and is probably under 25 years old. Blue
People under 25 (in the UK and in my experience) just do not speak like that. It sounds more like a forty to fifty year old living in the past.
20. Just email La Bella telling them what you want. I've bought several odd strings from them that way. It's worth doubling up your order because of the postage. EDIT: Actually, now I think about it, I didn't email them, I phoned them.
21.
I agree, that would have been silly and pointless! No, I reinstalled the pickups in their original positions before having the routing done- the magnets line up pretty much perfectly in Jazz Bass position as they are now...
Gotcha.
22. I'm a poor enough player that I'd assume it was me before I assumed it was the bass, upright or not.
23. Ah, OK, I see what you're saying. The original Decades with Dark Star pickups were oriented like that too: Actually I don't quite get why you would want to turn them round and put the coils so close together. It might as well be a single pickup bass. Not that there is anything wrong with single pickup.
24.
That does sound more like personal preference to me. I find a wide P bass neck and high action very, very hard to play, yet I know others love this set up.
When you've just got off a double bass, the wide P bass neck and high action seem neither wide nor high.
