1. Good lord, how have I not heard about this???? I'll be downloading the very minute I get home from work, I think
2. Our practice room is loud as sin, it's been crippling my poor ears for ages. Our drummer is a proper rock monster, and there's three guitarists, so I've had some hearing issues myself. Finally gone back to wearing ear plugs, and the difference it's made is incredible. Not only has my head stopped ringing after every rehearsal, but the clarity in everything is so much better. I can hear me, but I can hear exactly where the drummer is heading too (usually off on a tangent somewhere ), so it might be worth trying that!
3. It sure does, it's my favourite thing to do I've actually gone on a bit of spree myself the last couple of weeks. I was going to buy 'a couple of bits' to kickstart my Squier project, and I've ended up with a P/J set of Wizards, a Badass II, a whole new tone circuit and a scratchplate, as well as a Behringer BDI21 and a sexy white Crybaby!! Not to mention an enormous eBay watch list, and a shopping list of components to start modding all my other gear.... think I'm catching the bug! Can't wait to get all my new toys out in rehearsals this week!
4. +1 for the TC Electronic stuff... I haven't used it with my bass, but a guitarist I work with uses a G-Major in the loop of his delicious Laney valve head, and the effects are spot on. No discernible loss of tone either.
5. I've heard the VBA ones in action, although I haven't played through it myself. Sounded tasty to me
6. Relieved him of his Behringer BDI21 this week. Absolutely top bloke, friendly emails, and the pedal turned up well packed and quick as you could ask for. Couldn't be better - cheers James!!
7. I'm absolutely gassing my head off for this bass, but I just can't afford it..... so this is really just a well deserved bump for a tasty instrument
8. Cheers for your words of wisdom everyone.... I think I'm going to go with Vol/Vol/Tone for now, seems a shame to waste the output of my pickups with a blend knob. I guess if I really miss the master volume, I can always just rewire it!! Ordered the pots and stuff from WD last night, and they came this morning!! Gonna give the body and neck a good clean and start the wiring next week while I wait for my badass to land. I've been saying for two or three years now that I'm gonna fix this bass up, so it's about time really
9. Looks great, and the sound samples on the website seem pretty cool. How much did it wind up costing after the shipping/customs/nonsense?? I'm quite tempted!!
10.
In my experience it's a DFA pot.
Haha, does that stand for what I think it does?
11. I'm not a big fiddler once I'm playing, to be honest. Even with the 3 bands to play with on the 'ray, I tend to find somewhere I'm happy and leave it there, I like the simple approach! You know where you stand with everything on eleven
12.
VMJ gone to me
I'm kind of glad, it means I can stop fighting with myself over whether I'd want to buy it and be skint for another month
13.
Give Andy at Wizard a ring, he'll know.
Not a bad idea mate.... he's making my pickups today, I'm almost too excited.
I used a switch for a while but it became crackly. I think this is probably because it was a Maplin cheapy and the signal from pups is low. A switch with gold plated contacts wouldn't crackle.
Any suggestions where to source one? Oh, and I just looked at your pic properly for the first time... made me chuckle
14. That's a far too gorgeous piece of work to dismantle, I couldn't bring myself to do it. although..... how much for your Badass? *EDIT* The bridge, not his posterior. I know what you lot are like
15. Loads of great advice here, thanks a lot guys!! Hmmm.... the switch sounds a nice idea actually. I'm pretty fond of having a master volume on my basses, but I don't like the idea of losing the tone with a blend like that, I want to make the most of my shiny new pickups!! The only drawback with the switch might be if there's a jump in volume between the P and J. Anyone know if there'd be much of a difference in output level between a Wizard Thumper and an 84?
16.
the only problem is that i'm rubbish at playing unlined fretless.
Surely the problem is that you're just rubbish, matt Where've you been hiding, anyway?
17. Well, I've finally made some moves for renovating the old Squier, the scratchplate is here, the Wizards are on order, and I'm splashing on a Badass II tomorrow when I get paid The question is..... do I wire up with a blend pot and a master volume, or do I put individual volume controls in? I'm swaying towards the blend pot, but i'm open to suggestion. Pros and cons??
18. From my SVT3-pro manual.... I'd assume the same applies with the older ones:
NOTE: When adjusting the tube gain control from “10” to “0” rapidly, a low frequency hum as well as muting of the output signal occur simultaneously. This is due to shifting of the DC bias point of the tubes, and is no cause for concern. Adjusting the control quickly from “0” to “10” brings a moderate delay due to the power supply capacitors charging.
So no need to panic about that bit yet. Mine had a low volume problem within a week of purchase, had to go to Panic for a service. I know they changed my preamp valves, I'm not sure what else they said was up with it though, my memory's crap!!
19. Loving the Fafner mate, i'm jealous. Mate of mine had one that he sold on to buy an SVT-CL. I was planning to take it off his hands, but someone offered him bigger bucks for it Sure you don't want to swap for my rig?
20. There's probably all kinds of structural benefits to it, but really, it just looks so much cooler having that little white outline around your black scratchplate..... worth every penny
21. No sure about the pro, but I've got a standard guitar V-Amp2 for knocking up demos at home, and that has a stereo aux in with it's own volume control, so I'd expect the Pro would have it somewhere too. Best bet is look on the Behringer website, they have all the manuals on there, so it'll say in there
22.
Son of a *****
+1 to that mate, crikey! I've got a slightly less hi-fi set up, along the lines of: Sennheiser Freeport Wireless Gemini Power Conditioner (with funky rack lights, oh yeeeah!) Korg DTR-1000 Tuner Ampeg SVT3-Pro It's simple, but it does the job!! Oh, and it's bloody full of cable ties.... I like a nice tidy rack, I do!
23. Great, love to hear some thoughts on it, and sound clips would be sweet.... reviews are pretty thin on the ground. Harmony Central ones seem pretty positive, although a few people were concerned about the sensitivity/range of some of the controls. Anybody else?
24. I've heard rave reviews about the Wizards too. Andy's working his magic (sorry) on a Thumper and an 84 for me this week, I can't wait
25. I'm not much of a singer anyway, so i'm barely qualified to comment... but when they evacuate a wide enough area for me to have a go, I find it near impossible with a bass round my neck. If i'm playing guitar, it's a whole lot easier, but I struggle to keep my focus on the rhythm of my bass parts whilst singing any kind of melody. I don't like the sound of this practicing lark though, it sounds a bit like hard work
