1.
VMJ gone to me
I'm kind of glad, it means I can stop fighting with myself over whether I'd want to buy it and be skint for another month
2.
Give Andy at Wizard a ring, he'll know.
Not a bad idea mate.... he's making my pickups today, I'm almost too excited.
I used a switch for a while but it became crackly. I think this is probably because it was a Maplin cheapy and the signal from pups is low. A switch with gold plated contacts wouldn't crackle.
Any suggestions where to source one? Oh, and I just looked at your pic properly for the first time... made me chuckle
3. That's a far too gorgeous piece of work to dismantle, I couldn't bring myself to do it. although..... how much for your Badass? *EDIT* The bridge, not his posterior. I know what you lot are like
4. Loads of great advice here, thanks a lot guys!! Hmmm.... the switch sounds a nice idea actually. I'm pretty fond of having a master volume on my basses, but I don't like the idea of losing the tone with a blend like that, I want to make the most of my shiny new pickups!! The only drawback with the switch might be if there's a jump in volume between the P and J. Anyone know if there'd be much of a difference in output level between a Wizard Thumper and an 84?
5.
the only problem is that i'm rubbish at playing unlined fretless.
Surely the problem is that you're just rubbish, matt Where've you been hiding, anyway?
6. Well, I've finally made some moves for renovating the old Squier, the scratchplate is here, the Wizards are on order, and I'm splashing on a Badass II tomorrow when I get paid The question is..... do I wire up with a blend pot and a master volume, or do I put individual volume controls in? I'm swaying towards the blend pot, but i'm open to suggestion. Pros and cons??
7. From my SVT3-pro manual.... I'd assume the same applies with the older ones:
NOTE: When adjusting the tube gain control from “10” to “0” rapidly, a low frequency hum as well as muting of the output signal occur simultaneously. This is due to shifting of the DC bias point of the tubes, and is no cause for concern. Adjusting the control quickly from “0” to “10” brings a moderate delay due to the power supply capacitors charging.
So no need to panic about that bit yet. Mine had a low volume problem within a week of purchase, had to go to Panic for a service. I know they changed my preamp valves, I'm not sure what else they said was up with it though, my memory's crap!!
8. Loving the Fafner mate, i'm jealous. Mate of mine had one that he sold on to buy an SVT-CL. I was planning to take it off his hands, but someone offered him bigger bucks for it Sure you don't want to swap for my rig?
9. There's probably all kinds of structural benefits to it, but really, it just looks so much cooler having that little white outline around your black scratchplate..... worth every penny
10. No sure about the pro, but I've got a standard guitar V-Amp2 for knocking up demos at home, and that has a stereo aux in with it's own volume control, so I'd expect the Pro would have it somewhere too. Best bet is look on the Behringer website, they have all the manuals on there, so it'll say in there
11.
Son of a *****
+1 to that mate, crikey! I've got a slightly less hi-fi set up, along the lines of: Sennheiser Freeport Wireless Gemini Power Conditioner (with funky rack lights, oh yeeeah!) Korg DTR-1000 Tuner Ampeg SVT3-Pro It's simple, but it does the job!! Oh, and it's bloody full of cable ties.... I like a nice tidy rack, I do!
12. Great, love to hear some thoughts on it, and sound clips would be sweet.... reviews are pretty thin on the ground. Harmony Central ones seem pretty positive, although a few people were concerned about the sensitivity/range of some of the controls. Anybody else?
13. I've heard rave reviews about the Wizards too. Andy's working his magic (sorry) on a Thumper and an 84 for me this week, I can't wait
14. I'm not much of a singer anyway, so i'm barely qualified to comment... but when they evacuate a wide enough area for me to have a go, I find it near impossible with a bass round my neck. If i'm playing guitar, it's a whole lot easier, but I struggle to keep my focus on the rhythm of my bass parts whilst singing any kind of melody. I don't like the sound of this practicing lark though, it sounds a bit like hard work
15.
They are putting some more on e-bay today. I went to the shop in Liverpool and bought a 62 3TS P Bass. They let me have it for £115 and BassChatters can get them at this price if they wish. Ask for Neil.
Which shop is that? I wish you hadn't told me.... I'd have witheld my GAS so much longer if I didn't have to just nip into town on payday to get one
16. Tim Commerford from RATM has his jazzes tuned BEAD, one of his fave mods with them is to put a reverse headstock neck on there. He says it gives better stability on the low B having that extra distance behind the nut. Don't know how much difference it'd make really though. I'm thinking of knocking up a franken-jazz for BEAD when I've finished rebuilding my Squier though, so any advice is welcome. I'm not brave enough to do it to the 'ray yet, I'll wait and see how much use it gets on something less valuable first!
17. I fancy finally treating myself to some tasty overdrive, and these two both sound like they'd fit the bill. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with them, good or bad, before I take the plunge ordering one. I'm sure one or two of you pedal addicts must have had a go
18. Yeah, I think he was a G3 man back in the old days, I remember reading an interview with him complaining about the price of vintage ones, since he "made them famous again". His tone was always killer then though, he was one of the first bassist I really got into back when I was young
19.
Depends on how daring you want to be, and how much drilling/routing you're prepared to do!
Haha, I'm erring more on the side of lazy than anything else... I was going to try and aviod any dramatic drilling for the time being, I'm only really dipping my toes into modding here, so I'm starting small!! The tuners are a good call, I'd been considering the Hipshot, i do find myself up and down for drop-D quite often. Think i'm going to stay passive though, I'm tooled up with active basses so a change might be nice!! I'll check those Wizards out, I've seen them mentioned plenty around here, so they must be tasty!!
20. + 1,000,000 for Biffy Clyro. It's nuts how they're on Radio 1 every day now too. About flippin' time really. James Johnston's a cracking player, and the three of them are ace to watch.
21. I've got a couple of old 'first basses' lying about, I went through a load of cheapo stuff before I took the plunge into Stingray-heaven. My Squier P-Bass Special still holds it's own though. It's the one with P/J pickups and the Jazz neck. It plays brilliantly, and I've never had to adjust a thing on it, although the electrics have needed work now and again. I've got a GSR200 in the cupboard too, that hasn't lasted quite as well, the neck has needed adjustment plenty of times, and I've pretty much given up on it now. It's nice and slim to get around though, if you like that kind of thing. Stuff at that price range can be really inconsistent though, so it's best (in my opinion) to get one in your hands, and if it feels right, take that one home. Unless it's a Yamaha, they're always ace! P.S. I'm currently buying bits to upgrade the Squier, I miss it on stage! Any suggestions for killer mods, or shall I just go the nice easy Seymours and Badass route?
22. Our place (Crash in Liverpool) used to have some passable gear, it all gets abused by utterly shocking bands though. They're slowly replacing their collection of Marshall valve g**tar heads with Valvestate combos, and I haven't seen the Trace or the Ashdown rigs in ages. That's why the 'peg lives in a lock up there, so I avoid the trauma of dodgy combos
We pay the princely sum of ..... £3 per hour, Liverpool dock front, where dockland flats go for £500,000.
Would that be Vulcan?? Haven't been there in ages!! Has it changed much?
23. a 160a?? for how much? That's insane! i'll give you 80 for it
24. It's the tired old Rage Againt The Machine riffs for me, I can't help but crank out 'Freedom' in every soundcheck. Outshined by Soundgarden gets the odd look-in from time to time as well. Sometimes I really push the boat out, and play a song that's actually in the set too!
