1. Hi Christian, Welcome! Where in Austria are you? Some good friends of mine have a great band, based in Ried im Innkreis. They were a 3 piece called Sin After Sin (very heavy!) now a 4 piece called Revolve.. more classic rock, still excellent! http://www.myspace.com/revolverockmusic
  2. Not cheap (I agree with Chris_, but I use this one myself on a Jazz type with even more pronounced offset. http://www.themusicroom-online.co.uk/produ...products_id/129 Post free! I'll try to get a better pic going. We also do the Hercules http://www.themusicroom-online.co.uk/produ...products_id/698 Basically with a Jazz you're beter off with the hanging type stands.
  3. Also, don't expect too low notes to track well; especially if you're on roundwounds there'll be plenty of harmonics to confuse the Octaver. The OC-3 is a bit better, due to the poly version and the bass input, but, hey, Pino used an OC-2 with a fretless! Alot of his lines are played an octave higher than you'd expect.
  4.
Glad you're sorted mate, would love to try the Realist out. Look forward to seeing you, We are usually the first thing on in the main tent (around lunchtime I think) I might hang around for a little while after so would be good to meet up. cheers Jake
The Realist is great.. Having one myself, I also nowadays get to sell them in the shop, including to friends!
  5.
I've sorted the Fishman.
I have another of these if anyone else is looking.
  6. Hah! I've looked at your better photo now.. I've played with worse.. If it plays, feels and sounds good then go for it... if it breaks get a different string. Well, that'd be my approach.
  7. Hi Marc, I think most 'Long Scale' strings refer to 34". I've found this problem on some sets and not on others. I think as long as you don't go off the main body of the string you're ok. I've got a DeArmond and an Overwater at 35"; both happy with Hartke, Picato and (of course) Overwater strings.
  8. I just heard from the rep that the Vox Amplug headphones amp is now available in bass format. Not had a go yet, but if the AC30 version is anything to go by it should be well worthy. Gets some good comment on TalkBass. Will get one in the shop when possible and assess.
  9.
Best to go with the panel and say 4 ohms then.
We are in accord!
  10. Shouldn't cost much with a direct replacement pickup like that, prob a tenner or so. If you're not confident with soldering, get someone else to do it. As Shaggy says, not a particularly hard job, though, so if you're interested give it a go and spend the tenner on tea and biccies.
  11.
I'm confused as to how the Doppler effect comes into play here. I'm aware of the phenomenon of perceived tuning issues when you muffle the sound source, but I've always guessed it was down to the human ear's (and brain's) limited ability to receive and process pitch information at high sound pressure level. Once you get into the toilets and the SPL drops, you can hear tuning problems more easily. Just to clarify, I have no basis for this assumption. I don't know a great deal about the ear/brain at high SPL. It's just a guess. There's still nothing moving significantly when you're standing in the toilet, and any Doppler effect you ever experience should affect all frequencies in the spectrum to a proportionally equal extent. The singer surely won't suddenly appear to be out of tune due to the Doppler effect. If everyone on stage is in tune with each other, they'll still sound in tune with each other when you experience a Doppler shift. (And if they're out of tune, they should sound equally out of tune regardless of the Doppler effect.) Feel free to correct me. I may be a physics graduate, but I concentrated on quantum mechanics and general relativity, so my knowledge of acoustics and wave motion is a little shaky! Edited for idiotic phrasing
So if the whole band, including a fretless bass player, runs towards you at speed carrying the backline and drummer on a big trolley.. what then?
  12.
I have played all sorts of music on a fretless, not just jazz/ballads/quiet stuff and there is next to nothing you can't do on it (it will only go MWAHHHHHHH if you want it to!). THe only thing I think that the fretted bass excells in is slapping and, possibly, tapping (although the latter of these still sounds horrible to me, fretted or fretless).
+1 to all of that! I've played everything from folky and jazzy vibe to heavy rock. Choice of bass helps here http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=44673 was my one bass for yonks! Ebony board definitely more attack available.. you can always soften the sound if you want. Also generally more attack with steel roundwounds than flatties, but you'll need the board skimming every few years when you dig holes in the wood. I once read a Steve Bailey interview in which he described punters being surprised he was actually playing a fretless all gig. A couple of years later I got the same comments - a very good feeling! It doesn't have to be slidy slidy all the time!
  13. I've only ever really played fretless; usually have a fretted bass around but I just felt instantly at home without frets or lines. Go for it - play nothing else for two weeks, and you'll either start to settle (so play the gig - there's nowt like it for tightening up your playing) or not (if you're really uncomfortable you probably don't want to gig it)
  14.
MB1. Just checked 2x10 cab it has 2x C210T 150 Celestion Speakers in it both 8 ohm Custom made for Trace Elliot apparently. Does that make it 4 ohm then?
Assuming parallel wiring (most likely). If they're in series, it'll be 16 Ohms.
  15. Interested in a fretless 5 string in cool black? http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...amp;hl=congress Not far from you, work in Cleckheaton.
  16.
That's really smart! And you would have never guessed what it was originally. How does lopping off the head affect the truss rod?
Thanks! The truss rod picture finally came together.. you can just about make out the edge of the nut down there. Otherwise no effect on its operation.
  17.
If you find you're being intimidated by his playing, just visualise him naked - or even play naked yourself. I'm told it's quite an empowering technique.
I've played with (only a few exceptions here..) very good drummers, any of whose naked image would cause me to leave the stage, gibbering, at speed. Nice one on the gig Bilbo - no feeling quite like pushing yourself and making it work!
  18. Glad to know that "This guitar is in Great condition, with some belt scratch marks on the back body" Would be interesting to see 'ex-demo'...
  19.
Why not sell the fretless, use the cash to buy an amp. Get back out there and earn some cash through gigs
Why not sell the fretted one, use the cash to buy an amp. Get back out there and earn some cash through gigs. Seriously, though, that fretless really looks the DBs and I know from 1st hand that Overwater are uppermost in the top drawer. Hope things work out for you Stu. Kongo.. they really are that good...
  20. First quick scan.. mmmhmmm! I particularly like the Franklin fingerboard shots, but then I would, wouldn't I? I'll be back!
  21. My first bass gig was when someone who had seen me on guitar, mandolin and flute asked me to dep on bass, even though I'd never even touched one before - "you'll be quite capable"! Another mate had just bought a fretless, and lent me that.. I were proper smitten! Went out and got myself a fretless which I still use over 20 years later! http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=44673 Once I stopped playing it like a mandolin I started getting a load of gigs! I've never stopped playing anything else, though, and I find that new technique and material learned on one instrument will often either feed or affect my approach to the others. Do others get this?
  22. hubrad

    I'm off to NZ.
That one came runner up in Miss Eweniverse 2007.
I'm just going to stick my head under the car and let the suspension down!
  23.
Keep looking at this and wishing you could stretch the neck by an inch... but I keep looking anyway
.. or if you want the ultimate in 5 string fretless 35" check this (not mine!) out: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=50448 rather more expensive, undoubtedly, but worth every penny and will last you a lifetime.
  24. When you said all the ash was going black, I mourned the passing of the natural wood, but this looks gorgeous! Beauty job, and fretless to boot.. what more can one ask for?
  25.
I wish I could have been there. My Mum is a huge fan of the late, lamented, Jake, dating back to his days on TV ( Was it Bradon's Week or similar - something in black and white after my bedtime). I recently borrowed her "Jake in a Box" collection and listened to the whole thing. Bought back lots of memories. Most of the more serious songs don't really work for me ( Lah-di-dah is an exception ), and some of them are badly overproduced with inappropriate orchestral backing. Hopefully you won't be guilty of that as a trio ! He was a great guitarist as well as a clever songwriter. My favourites are "Isobel makes love on national monuments", The Cactus and The Statues. Do let us know when you are next performing.
Whereabouts are you? Such events, all around the country, are usually publicised on www.jakethackray.com For me, he was a hero of the language!
Brilliant wasn't he! He was on That's Life too, I think I remember.
That's where I first saw him, at some young age. For years I just remembered the vibe, then I got a tape and a songbook...
