Did someone say radius? Seeing as it's going off at tangents anyway.. I find radius more of a "thing" when it comes to guitar (not that I dabble with git that much).. now, I had an old injury to the left forefinger which makes it impossible to fully straighten it, so bar chords if done in the approved manner have a few non-note clunk's in the middle somewhere. A very curvy roundy radius however works OK. I've not found many guitars have this tho, I had a nice old Hofner f hole acoustic thing that did, but unfortunately and unwisely flogged it as I reckoned I wouldn't use it much so...

I believe they do this turn up and run trick as the tracker in the van shows where they've been QED.. They couldn't claim to have attempted pick up from a given address if they were down the caff or something! As mentioned before it's just a scheme to save a few minutes, which will add up considerably in a day's "work"

I think the OP would have to say he's right.. in as much as narrow/skinny neck doesn't automatically equate to this "fast" thing.. QED The rest is all down to personal preference and or what works best for the individual bass player, hence the debate..

Nearest I'd get to that would be a cheat sheet with simply the chords scribbled on a bit of paper in felt pen! Reading on a gig conjoures up an image of those big band stand things with a "Jack Parnell" logo and a lil' light on the back to see your part!

I could read notation in a very, very rudimentary fashion when I started saxophone, thanks to the venerable Tune a Day books. I probably retain a hazy memory of the basics. I confess I've never had or felt the need to read notation when playing bass in any context.

I had a (very) few lessons on the saxophone when I was a youngster, didn't feel I got anything that useful from it & I pretty soon concluded that I was better off going my own way with musical endeavours. Then discovered Bass.. Being the punk era of course helped tremendously on the basis you could go out and "do it" anyway.. 😁

Well I've got short stubby fingers and relatively big thumbs, an old girlfriend once said I had "monkey's hands".. Charming eh... 😁

No idea what model Wal it was, doubtless the cheapest most basic they did, (second hand of course) just regular fretted passive (I think) 4 string thing, all plain black, I just thought it was absolute rubbish, it's the one bass that really sticks in my mind as hating it! If you are slinging a 6string fretless, then I doff my hat to you sir! 👍

I suppose if I had to choose a preferred type it'd be more of a chunky baseball bat neck, but I'm really not fussed, if you shove a bass in my mits I'll get the hang of it whatever. Thinking back the only bass I really hated, the neck / fboard in particular, was a Wal. I had one very briefly about 1981 and got rid of it pretty sharpish..

Dunno about slim or shallow, but I once bought an Aria Rickyfaker that some mug had stripped the paint off the back of the neck saying "it makes it play faster" WTF was my thought on that. Luckily I managed to repaint the offending area with a rattle can nitrocellulose and all was good. What the 'ell is a "fast" neck anyway.. beats me??

Hmm.. I recently scored a basic Squier P (pj) bass that still had the cling film on everything Inc the machine heads and PUs.. It clearly hadn't been touched from new. Now this thing ( which I bought mainly as everything else I have is currently disassembled in bits) is excellent IMHO and sounds great exactly as is. I'm not mega fussy or detail obsessed but the neck, frets, general build etc etc are absolutely fine and fit for purpose, again IMHO I didn't even have to drop the action or do the intonation. I've gigged far inferior basses to this in the past hundreds of times, including "names" that didn't play or sound nearly as good... pity instruments that go as well as this weren't available as cheapies back in the 70s when you were looking at the nasty short scale Woolworths jobs as a "starter"

I'd think they have to accept returns as it's a sight unseen purchase as above regulations .. why not give them a ring and say you'd be interested in buying X item but need to have the return option, with no arguments in the "unlikely" event that it doesn't suit, can't see how they can refuse tbh..
