I've only ever had one person come up to me afterwards and say "that's a really good bass sound you've got" and it turns out.. he was another bass player... I've had numerous say they like the "way I played" type thing... but that's more likely the whole "throwing shapes" performance malarkey rather than considered approval of what I actually played on the bass itself. The average punter probably doesn't know the difference between a bass and a guitar anyway. I'm firmly in the 50 to 200 quid brigade too.. I seem to make the same clanging racket on any bass, posh or not, so I'd certainly not splurge an absurd amount of dosh on one even if I could afford it ( which I can't )

Never knew they did kramer Ali necks as a fretless, unless someone just ground the frets down? I also recall you could pick a kramer up fairly cheap as many people didn't fancy them. My last hands on experience of them was in the early 80s, I've not seen one out in the wild for donkeys years.

Wtf does "potentially" fretless mean? High start price if it's buggered in some way. I had a single PU version of this, and later one of the nat. maple finish ones with the cream coloured P bass PU. I liked them and they were quite a good bass tho I swapped the first one for a Stingray.. which was better!

I've often seen it punted (inc by "pro"guitar workshops) that if you're re-finishing you can spray nitro over poly if you scuff it to key the surface, I suspect largely coz getting poly off is so difficult. .. it supposedly sticks ok but tbh I never fancied the idea, and if I was dead set on nitro on a neck or something I'd want it straight on the wood

I'd imagine it's just a way to boast of a "nitro" finish... whilst still using what they're already geared up for.. cheap and easy, tried and tested poly to do the main coating, and then a light cosmetic topping of nitro so they can say so. That's my cynical view...

The odd things I saw on TB they seem to be debating strings a fair bit, if I did one of these I'd use a tailpiece, which would use up a bit of extra length of string as supplied. I'd keep the existing git. scale length tho and bridge at the same point it is now, as I'd want to use the existing fret layout, I don't want a fret less and I'm not going to be creating a new fretboard from scratch! I found pics of this semi acoustic that someone switched from Guitar to bass which uses a tapiece and floating hofner type bridge, which aparrently works well. plus another epiphone LP done likewise

Definately.. In my case it was late 70s early 80s.. you could get a second hand Rick or Fender P for about 200 quid and loose change, whilst it was a fair bit of dosh it was do-able.. I got my first Stingray as a swap for a Kramer Ali neck thing as I recall.

Drummers are usually lousy tho... 😁
