1. I got my first defective set of DR sunbeams recently after using them for a couple of years. I had read about people finding the odd dodgy packet but never found them myself til now. Sounded OK when strung up but the D-string went dead after 1 rehearsal.
2.
Mine took 3 months.
FFS
3. Moved the FO pickup on, am awaiting a SD Antiquity 1 to drop in. We'll see how that goes!
4.
Wish this had been for sale before I forked out £540 for mine. It won't be here for long. Have a bump.
Me too. Ordered mine last week. Could have saved £200 and a 6-8 week wait!
5.
How should we organize this chaps? Fund or cheque/cash in the post kind of thing?
Some kind of bulk paypal type thing? I'm not sure but I hope Evil Undead gets to keep her dream bass. Charity begins at home so the saying goes, and I signed up to give £10 a month to the Blue Cross just because they came to my house at an inconvenient time and showed me pictures of puppies in cages. If I can't contribute to someone in need in my own 'community', what am I doing giving to charity full stop?
6. I soaked my Sunbeams in meths and it brought them back as-new! They'd gone past the point of sweet-spot worn-in warmth and were sounding a bit dead. Left overnight in an old dog bowl, curled up and soaked in meths, brought them back to the brand-new fresh out the packet clanky overly bright sound you hope will die down quickly! They didn't last as long the next time through, and after another month or so they became difficult to tune-a sure sign of string death. It works, and is worth doing, but only to extend the life of the strings a bit.
7. Very sorry to hear this. I wouldn't know what to do with myself if I lost my dog.
I'm a bassist who doesn't know theory and plays covers in pubs, and I don't need an MIA Fender to do that with.
Don't be so hard on yourself. You don't need to be a graduate of music to warrant owning a quality instrument. Anybody who's out there playing, putting the work in, needs a tool that's fit for the job, and I consider the MIA precision to be the perfect gigging bass. Jesus how many people out there own an MIA precision (or more expensive/ vintage basses) and never take them out the house?! If you're playing it live so others can hear it then that's justification enough. It's a shame you have to sell, but you definitely deserve to own that bass. Bass chat whip-round?
8.
You will probably find what you are looking for but i see a theme here. You like the tone until you put it through your rig, then the lows are overbearing. Have you exhausted your EQ tweaking? Maybe a compressor would help.
No, the cab definitely has limitations for sure, which is why I ordered a Barefaced last week, but I do get the tight thump I need from my RW p'up through my rig, I find it's just a bit vanilla sounding. The Fender Original is the exact opposite!
9. I've heard the Antiquity 2's are very good. In a sense, I guess I'm after a more compressed sound than the fenders gave me. I need that low-mid chest-pounding thump that precision's do so well. I had a 2005 USA I traded on here which I liked the sound of, but the low end was a bit beefy for me. Had a tight sound though, which I liked, but could be a bit overpowering in the mix. The RW pickup does what I'm after but lacks character.
10. I did try that actually, to no joy. Had the gain down as far as it would go, and the bass. The bass helped, but made it sound hollow. I wouldn't consider myself heavy handed, I have a very low action and have to be careful not to dig in too much. Perhaps the OTB doesn't like these pickups?
11. I just ordered a Compact, as the GK212mbe I had ordered from Thomann was going to be another 4 weeks, and I wasn't convinced it was going to give me the quality I was after (weight was really good though). Can't wait for it to turn up! I'm in St Austell, but it won't be here for 6-8 weeks!
12. nope- finger style. The highs aren't worrying me too much TBH, it's literally just the boom of the lows.
13. I'm wondering whether the Wizard Trad might be a better option, but am concerned it may be too similar to the Fender Original. I was hoping for a sound that locked to the kick drum, and I could hear and feel the thump of every note in my chest. The FO seemed to smother the kick drum. If the Trads sound like what I'm after I'll try them out.
14. I use a Bass Terror, so you can imagine how a fat sounding pickup if freaking me out a bit
15. Mixed opinions on this pickup to be honest. Used it a couple times at rehearsal now, and the tone of the thing is great, but what I'm struggling with is the lows. It seems to be very fat sounding, like its moving too much air. I was hoping for a tight, punchy pickup, which really sat in the mix and gave a woody thump. It sounded really full, but I actually struggled to hear myself in the band mix. The lows were far too fat sounding. Turning up the volume just made it worse! I'm wondering whether it may partly be a limitation of my cab, or the rehearsal room, so I'm reserving judgement for the time, at least until a gig, but wondered what people's opinions were of this pickup in general with regards to what I described? Do you guys get a good thump from this pickup? Or is it a bit fat and scooped, like I found it?
16. Hey guys, Went for the Fender Original in the end. Just fitted it today. Only played for 5mins at home, wow. Very punchy, warm, and nicely voiced. Hopefully i'll be as impressed at rehearsal tomorrow. Saving up for the raised A SD Antiquity to go in my Road Worn P!
17. Cheers guys, I don't think it's the strings, as it was happening before I put the sunbeams on and the results are the same. It's the strangest thing, and I noticed it as soon as I played it for the first time. I've owned a few maple neck basses now and none have sounded like this unplugged- it's almost as if there is something loose somewhere- I could be convinced the core of the string is rattling around inside the wrap, for instance, but it can't be. Maybe the frets are slightly loose?
18. Very lively 'burst going on there!
19. I had the LB30 head with the LB212 cab, which I still have, the volume was slightly less than my 150w Trace combo but slightly louder than my 100w Ampeg combo. To my ears, anyway. Make of that what you will!
20. Hey Louis. You're really cool. I wish I were you.
21. Awesome. Dream bass.
22.
Thomastik-Infeld IN344 Superalloys are £11:25 with free delivery at Strings and THings at the moment. http://www.stringexpress.co.uk/Thomastik_Bass_Guitar_Strings.htm (near the bottom) Got a couple of sets a while ago. Sound good to me.
Great price! Just ordered a set, to try out. I know Thomastik strings are highly regarded so at that price, a no-brainer!
23. Prob safer to buy something else then!
24. Having to wait til 18/7 to get my GK 212MBE I had planned to pair with my Bass Terror head is already becoming a chore, so I have started looking at other options. As much as I'd like to just go and get a Barefaced compact, they are a little out of my price range tbh. The TC BC212 falls into my price range, but is only listed as 250w? Will this thing die if I run the Bass Terror through it at gigging volumes, or is the 250w irrelevant? There are so many ways of measuring watts.... Also, would this be a good cab choice for the head? I can't find many reviews. Price and weight is right though....
