1. Set your relief first, as you have done. Now you can go back and adjust at the bridge, if you need the action lower. Adjust small amounts at a time, retune after each adjustment, and get the saddles as low as you can without buzzing from 12th fret up. I generally check there is no buzzing from 12-15th fret if I play fairly heavy. In theory, with relief set right, and nut cut correctly, (and in tune!) if it's not now buzzing on 12th-15th frets it won't be buzzing lower down. In theory!
2. just stuck a set of Balanced Tension D'Addario's on, and managed to drop the action to the floor! Bit of a tighter feel, but the strings all feel even- no floppy E, and the action is where I want it now.
3. Bareknuckle if you want to stay UK handmade, but significantly more expensive than Wizard were.
4. Ridiculously good guitars for the money. Very good live sound, our guitarist uses one and rates it above his other, more expensive instruments. Have a free bump.
5. Easy, no-hassle purchase from Colin. Payment sent, parcel arrived the next working day, very well packaged and perfectly as described. Can't recommend enough!
6. Happy with my Thumper. More grind than a standard P pickup, but doesn't sacrifice it's sweet spot in the mix to achieve it, as others tend to do.
7. It will either be the relief or the nut. If it's the relief, i'd be expecting it to buzz more around the 4th fret but it's worth checking. Fret 1st and last fret, and sight gap between 8th fret and bottom of string. For a low action, aim for a gap about credit card thickness here. If it's looking less than this, the neck may be a bit too straight, which will mean you will need to loosen the truss rod. if the gap looks ok, chances are its the nut. Adjusting at the bridge is merely compensating for a problem elsewhere and you shouldn't have to do this. Either way, if you paid to get it set up now it's playing like this, take it back and get them to look at it.
8. Great playing! Ironically the worst he played was on the easiest song- another one bites the dust. I saw this thread and thought- What Evolution? 1951- Fender Precision- 2013- Fender Precision.
9.
The 80s was a never ending parade of slapiness. If you walked into a guitar shop all you could hear was slapping. Horrible. The thing about 50s-90s music is it's been around long enough for the cream to rise and the dross to drop out the bottom. 00s-10s are still fresh in most people's minds. My dad moaned about 80s music, the 60s and 70s were much better he jokes, then points out that a lot of the 60s and 70s music was hated by my grandad. It's what happens...
But music today is just noise! FACT!
10.
The new PJB Double Four is an amazing piece of kit. It's tiny, sounds huge, weighs nothing and has an aux in for MP3 and headphone out if you want to practice quietly. Needs to be positioned near a rear wall for maximum bass output and would certainly fit on a study shelf because of the low weight and narrow depth. They're around £350 but really impressive. I can't think of anything that really compares to them
Cheers, but a wee bit out of my price range for what I'm looking for.
Does Mrs Cameltoe know what her Basschat name is..?
Hell no!
Allow me to chime in; I have the Vox Pathfinder 10 & not only have I used it live once (!) & in the studio but my band rehearse around mine regularly with the drummer tapping along on a guitar case. Really nice fat decent old school tone & volume wise it holds out. Plus it looks the cats PJs so I now just leave it on show. I think I got mine Xmas 2010 and it was a solid investment.
As far as I can see, this looks like a hell of a good price if it can do what I need it to! I think it's between this and the Ampeg, but the Ampeg is twice the price.... and doesn't look as good.
11. I blame the 80's. I think that era killed the virtuoso player dead. Too much slappedly slap!
12.
I do indeed need to put some more shelves up ,Shelly, in order for Mrs Dingus to display her impressive and painfully expensive shoe collection . I don't know who this Jimmy Choo guy is , but I wish he would bugger off and make something else for a living before I go bankrupt !
I feel your pain Dingus. Mrs Cameltoe had a lovely pair of 'Christian Louboutin' shoes for her 30th birthday present. The price? Roughly what I'd expect to pay for a nice example of an MIJ/CIJ Precision.
13. Actually, the BEST advice I could give you is to post one of the tracks up here. There are some very experienced musicians on this site and as a collective I think Basschat would be able to offer very constuctive advice on what may be wrong, be it groove, your tone, etc. that would be far more informative than simply suggesting reverb. I can understand if you didn't want to however.
14. Yup, it sounds like the others have said, maybe the groove just isn't there. Doesn't mean it's your fault though, however us bassists tend to get the blame for such things, especially as nothing ever sticks to those teflon-coated guitarists! I've struggled with both Drums and Guitar pulling the rhythm about before- it can be hard on a song that needs to groove, as the whole thing can end up feeling weird if you're not on the same page. I would normally say follow the drummer, but this could be bad advice if its the drummer who's not nailing it, and it might end up sounding like it's your fault if the whole rhythm section is wonky. If that's the case you need to have a chat with him! As far as the 'clean and clinical' sound goes, L2000's can cut through the mix quite a bit, I'd suggest using your Fender with some of the tone rolled back for a Motown in the mix thump, that won't jump out as much. Also sounds like she's spoken about this to the others already, not to worry you.
15. November always seems to be quiet. We had a gig at one of our regular busy venues at the start of the month and it was dead. December is usually surprisingly busy.
16. Hi Guys, I've had the yearly 'what do you want for xmas' question, and given funds are tight at the moment and my response of 'A Bravewood!' didn't go down too well, I thought about what else could improve my bass playing life. Myself and Mrs Cameltoe are in the process of setting up a home office. It will only be a small space to the side of our living room, mainly so Mrs Cameltoe can work from home, but I am planning to keep a bass in there for noodling around to tracks I need to learn, and general playing around (trying to play slap... ). So...I could really do with a small practice amp to allow me to hear what I play! I need it to be aesthetically pleasing, so it won't offend Mrs Cameltoe in the office, and I may even want it to sit on one of the many shelves I am planning on putting up, so small and light will help! Of course, most of all, it has to sound good. Volume levels aren't so important, as it will mainly be used for solo practice, but I may need to take it to the occasional acoustic living room rehearsal (no drummer). I love the look of the Vox Pathfinder 10, and the Hi-watt B20, but have no experience of trying either. I see Ampeg also do a small practice amp as well, although this is a little more expensive and brick-like. Anyone fancy chiming in with recommendations?
17. I've played my TB500 for about 4 years now, always through passive precision basses, and I don't get the whole 'breaks up after 9 o'clock' thing on mine. It's probably 5 years old, and has the hot DI issue. Mine is fairly clean until about 12 o'clock, when it starts grinding. 3pm sounds nice and raspy, any more than that and it's farting! That's how it behaves with the standard, cheap chinese ECC83's that came with it, although I have done some fiddling with it... I've tried Tung Sol 83's, which were very dark sounding, and I now have some Phillips ECC81's in there, which have given it a warmer tone. The downside to the 83's in my experience, is it can sound a bit boomy, but even with them I can play at around 10-11 o'clock gain without it breaking up like others have described. I do have a light touch though, and play with fingers.
18. If it was me looking to buy a new P bass, and i had your budget, I'd buy Jamondrums AVRI '57 from the market place. But it's not, and i don't
19. it's a stealth bass at the moment, black everything, but a new wiring loom to wire the pickups in series is to be installed, with a chrome bell plate. I really dig the racing stripes though, I want! Not in that colour though...
20. Bumping this. Just fitted a set to my Roadworn P, and I really, really like them. The Roadworn feels best with a low action, and it can cope well with one, but I am no stranger to the floppy E string problem. I don't usually like to raise the E at the bridge to compensate, I just try and play around it, as I really like the way a low action feels on this guitar. Pleased to say though that the balanced tension set seem to have solved this problem! Slight trussrod tweak needed to compensate for the slightly heavier all round gauge, but with the same relief as before and the same low action, all the strings feel equal in tension and no floppy E string! If you like a really low action I can't recommend them enough. Soundwise, they're D'addario's!
21.
DO NOT attempt to buy any products from Silvertone Amp Covers and DO NOT use a payment provider trading under the name of NOCHEX. I ordered a cover for a MarkBass 151 P cabinet from Silvertone in September 2013. I received an email from NOCHEX, the payment provider, to acknowledge their receipt of my money. Since then, nothing, especially no delivery of the cover. I received no confirmation of order; I can't contact Silvertone because they have taken their website down, and NOCHEX have stopped replying to my questions as to the whereabouts of my money. I have no idea whether NOCHEX have simply banked the money or given it to Silvertone. Only after having this problem did I think to check Silvertone Amp Covers' credentials and I found posts about them on BassChat from two years ago. I wish I had checked before I ordered.
Trading standards?
22. Played one on Saturday, liked it but didn't love it. Posted on another thread about set ups- the action was very high and this didn't help to give me a feel for the bass. Looked lovely though, fit and finish spot on I thought. And the neck, somehow, still feels like a P neck even though it's slimmer and easier to play. It wasn't the lightest example though. I'd like to play a couple more.
23. I would mask the areas off, but leave half a centimetre or so of bare wood exposed to be sprayed. You can then feather this bit in with 400grit wet and dry when finished.
24. Masking tape
