1. For sale is a rather lovely Breedlove Solo unlined fretless acoustic in hard case http://breedlovemusi...4-bass-fretless. List price was over £1,000, and it was available in region of £700 but is now discontinued. It’s the only acoustic bass that’s ever worked for me, and the list I’ve owned includes top-end basses by Ovation and Takamine, so it's held it’s own against some pretty stiff, and far more expensive, opposition. It has quite a big tone compared to most acoustic basses, and the LR Baggs pre-amp is extremely good of replicating that tone amplified. Bass includes rather nice hard case which I understand was an optional extra over and above list price. £450 ono Demo by an enthusiastic Canadian with a striking resemblance to Damon Hill in his later years here https://www.youtube....h?v=gQEn2jlaGd4 Selling it because it's not getting played any more, if I need an acoustic tone now I used DB. I'll miss noodling on it it, and it's a shame to be selling such a lovely instrument, but chest la vie I can post it (hard case is very good) or you can collect from Canterbury, Kent Chris
 2. I auditioned for a band whose guitarist couldn't hear majors and minors. I had learned the bass parts to the letter. When I diplomatically raised the issue the general vibe at audition was that I should follow his lead - if he was playing a major third, so should I. Did 'Take It Easy' in G with A and E major chords and bass! Band seemed unflustered by this, despite it sounding awful. I made my apologies and left.
 3. Best cab ever, I sold mine after it broke my car http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mesa-Boogie-1516B-Cab-/322107702595?hash=item4aff1d7d43:g:s~UAAOSwr0ZXNh9H
 4.
All very good points (and FWIW I do agree with many of them). I'm not looking to be confrontational (and did indeed make the point about adopting a multi-faceted approach). I'd agree that in the absence of any clarification from the OP, there do appear to be some flaws in the piece as it stands. That said, his aim seems to be to develop an algorithm: any algorithm he develops will need data. How he generates that data is the point under discussion (and which may stand in need of further development), but the need for it isn't going to change. The obvious place to look for it is in the music itself.
Yep, agreed; how he generates the data is exactly the problem. Data in itself isn't a neutral phenomenon simply waiting to be tapped into (as I suspect you know), the way the question is asked biases the data. So, for any given problem there's good data and there's poor data. OK, those data will no doubt tell a story and that story will be part of the thesis. These days any competent data analyst can analyse even the most complex dataset, but it doesn't mean that the results will tell us anything about the real world or the specifics of the question asked. That's the difference between good data analysis and good data capture. Whilst an incompetent bassist (certainly by the standards of the survey), I am a competent data capturer (i10=24, h=17)
 5.
When all's said & done, it is a Ph.D. project, so the level of difficulty involved should really be a given I would have thought...
A PhD is supposed to good research, not difficult. OK, we don't know the full story of the OP's work, but s/he states very clearly that they want data from bass players of all levels, and I think his questionnaire attracts the opposite, it speaks to a relatively narrow spectrum of educated and tutored musicians. If the survey were specifically aimed at this relatively small group of bass players, then fine (having said that, from some of the responses in the thread, it's clearly drawing ambiguous responses from players interpreting questions differently, so perhaps it still needs some thought). I get the feeling the OP should have piloted the survey on a small group, got some feedback (the type he's getting here), and then gone public with it (although perhaps that's what he's doing). I'd certainly suggest that s/he explain or provide examples of techniques specified and clarify some of the questions themselves, both of which would both broaden the range of players who can respond and at the same time increase the reliability of the responses. And frankly, use a decent platform, the YOB has a drop down icon next to it but you're required to manually enter the year!
 6. Not their best by some way but still a whole lot better than most, and I prefer a world in which the chilis are making music to one in which they're not. OK, they're not the most talented musicians or the best songwriters, but something about them has consistently resonated with me in a way few other bands have in the 40 odd years in which I've been consciously listening to music. I'm biased
 7.
Not a well designed or considered survey and i gave up. In fact I felt patronised. If this is PhD level work your supervisors should be more on top of how you collect your data.
I should expand; if you're looking for 'bass players of any ability or skill', you have to use language that allows responses from the entire range. Your survey language is tutored/schooled, so might exclude many players who don't fall into that category, such as myself. Some of the most competent and musical players I know are unschooled, whilst many of the schooled players I know are less competent and relatively unmusical. Many unschooled bassists can perform some or all of the techniques listed with competence, but without knowing the labels you use, whilst schooled players might know the terms but be less competent. Your data will not capture the full range of competencies of all players, and will over-represent the responses of schooled players.
 8. I do keep coming back to this and questioning whether it would be wrong to have two Flea basses

 10.
They'll be no escape from my ham-fisted Stuart Zender impersonations.
"Residents reported that the extraordinarily loud noise, which was heard over most of Kent and even in some parts of northern France, was reminiscent of the song 'Cosmic Girl' by '90s funksters Jamiroquai. The MOD have refused to comment, and a 30 year old man from Cliftonville is helping Police with their enquiries"
 11. When you suspect that a member is a top guy, it's always good to meet them in person and have it confirmed. Alex not only sold me his Mackie gear at a great price, but he helped me out a whole load by delivering it also (a not inconsiderable couple of hundred mile round trip). Great chat about gigging, gear, the forum (anyone's ears burning....) and the joys of being a dad to daughters. Great guy, great gear, great transaction, 100% recommended Thanks Alex Chris
 12.
The temptation to pair this up with a Barefaced 410 is growing stronger by the day.. Mmm. Nice.
Do it mate, do it. I'll be able to hear you from here
 13.
A new bass shop is always something to celebrate. Good luck and prosperity, Nick.
+1
 14. Hi david, I've been looking at this for months but it would be a big commitment to collect let alone to finish! Can you tempt me with any more information? Dimensions would certainly be a start, but history etc would help also. I assume the bottom pic is the bass before it was stripped and dismantled? If so, how did it sound/play then? It looks blonde in the pic but the scroll appears dark in the pic next to it, is the neck original to the bass? Any/all info gratefully received. Cheers Chris
 15. I've a few offers of very nice double basses, many thanks. I'm a pretty crude bluegrass/roots player, so am really looking for an old ply instrument that will produce the required sound with ease, and which will fit the aesthetic in question - perhaps the later shouldn't be important, but at times it is. In short, I'm really not looking for anything new or recent, or an instrument best suited to orchestral/jazz. Something old, beaten-up and American would however work very well indeed
 16. Exactly why RHCP are so highly rated by so many of us, a deceptively simple and definitive statement of SoCal groove
 17. Damn, that was quick
 18.
Well that didn't last long, I'd just smashed open the daughters piggy bank and got to £3.22p in 2ps and 1ps, there were still lots of 5ps I that never got countered....
Ha ha, I ventured into my eldest's piggy bank a while back to find to my horror that she has amassed far more cash than I can remember in one place for a while! Seems she was pretty much working on the basis that any shiny flat round object was fair game, especially the gold ones! Whilst it would't have been a pre-CBS Precision, I could probably have bought a bass!
 19.
Ohmygosh that CS is just awesome!!!
It is, but despite its qualities as an instrument and it's rather appealing faux relic, you pick it up and you know it was recently put together by the Custom Shop to look like a certain famous player's instrument! Pick up the '57 on the other hand and you know that it's been played for 59 years. In short it's been around for pretty much the whole history of rock and roll as far as I'm concerned. There's mojo and magic in the '57
 20. Sufficient interest in this from trusted BCers for me to place it on hold for the time being. If things fall through I'll open it up again Chris
 21.
Having shared some emails with Chris recently I am really am gutted for him that this is up for sale, but totally understand the dilemma he's been facing. I'm even more gutted that I don't have the funds to buy it back, I never wanted to sell it in the first place but the cash was needed elsewhere. I also used to own the CS55 that Chris has pictured and is keeping, that is an incredible bass with no faults at all, but I actually bonded more with the original 57 P Bass, it is special and full of vintage history mojo. Bargain for the right BC'er hope it sells soon so I can stop pondering how to get it back
Thanks Dan, you've had you ear bent a little on this! Much appreciated mate.
 22. In a different life I met many famous musos, most were prats to be honest (this was the '80s), and some were among the most arrogant and self centred people I've had the displeasure to meet. In the context of the O/P, most seemed only too keen to limit the chances me or anyone else not realising who they were by making it very clear that they were indeed who they were! The most curious exception was the singer from the world's most famous rock'n'roll band who was sufficiently unassuming and low key for me to assume that he was simply a bloke who looked like Mick Jagger.
 23.
this is perfect! a dream bass! wish i had the cash! want my Fbass for it?
Hey mate, many thanks, but too many electric basses at present I'm afraid, sorry. Dream bass? Yes' I think it's just that for pro/semi-pro players who travel a lot, or for players like me who find - or in my case found - themselves playing anything from dodgy pubs to festivals, and who just prefer to get their only DB the gig and home without too much space being required in the van, and in and out of the gig itself with little risk of damage. I never have to worry about mechanical issues either, let's face it, I can stick my hand right in there and sort any soundpost problems So why am I selling? I've sacked both bands I was in, and these days I just need a double bass to sit in the studio. In short, the only things that really matter are tone and playability. The occasional gigs pop up for sure, but I'll just have to be a real man and take a DB in one piece to those! In short the Chadwick is in part overkill and perhaps a little too clinical an instrument for my needs now. Probably fair to say that I prefer my basses a little older and dirtier; I imagine most would think the opposite! I'll happily keep this if no-one wants it or if I can afford to buy an old ply instrument without selling - I'd just stick the Velvets back on for the occasional jazzier moments. Happy days
 24. I hope the original author doesn't mind me using his words, but they so eloquently described both myself and the dilemma in which I currently find myself that I couldn't resist.....
My erratic, voracious and frequently emotional purchasing behaviour has placed me in a position where - to the detriment of other pursuits and demands - I have enjoyed the privilege of access to an extraordinary feast of the world's most beautiful basses.....
Ha ha, it was like he was me Now, here's the dilemma in question On the left a recently acquired '57. Bought from Dan (chiliwailer) on BC, and in many respects a dream instrument for me since first seeing a certain blond Geordie sporting a similar beast in the '80's. On the right, a Fender Custom Shop version of a '55, also recently acquired, this time from Andy Travis, also on BC So where's the dilemma I hear you ask? To be honest, I had hoped the Custom Shop version was going to do the job live (which I don't do that often these days), whilst the original was going to be the mainstay, alongside DB, in my studio. Problem is that I simply haven't bonded with the original, at least not to the degree that justifies keeping an instrument valued at £8,000 around, and especially given what else I could do with that money at present. In short, the Custom Shop will do very nicely for both live and studio, and selling the '57 will allow me to buy some more gear! It was an emotional buy at a very very good price. Dan's original thread is here http://basschat.co.u...ginal-vintage/. I'm going to offer it for sale for what I paid Dan, a rather incredible £5,500. If it doesn't move it will go on a consignment sale at a far higher price with one of the usual suspects. In a way I'm a little angry with myself to be selling it, if for no other reason that prices for vintage Fenders are extremely low at present and in a few years this bass would likely have earned as much sitting in its case under the bed as I will have earned gigging. But c'est la vie. I'll of course listen to trade/PX offers, I could be persuaded to trade this for a vintage post-'57/split-coil pre-CBSPrecision, a vintage ply DB (with cash my way), or a boat More pics below. I will post more pics and add details as we go, I have been meaning to do this for a while and finally made the decision today, so didn't want to find myself procrastinating again. I have receipts for original sale from New Kings Road Vintage for £8,000 and some other bits and pieces that speak for its provenance.
 25. I should add that I would have taken some pics of the bass all folded and in the case but I really don't want the hassle of retuning the guts at present. I'll happily break it down and rebuild it face-to-face for any prospective buyer, and if I get bored one evening will do a youtube vid
