  1. I almost bought one of these in the '80's, but it was very, very heavy....couldn't make myself think about schlepping it around.
  2. Gear is important so far as you need the tools to consistently get the job done. Me, I don’t like compression…probably because I’m an old fart who didn’t grow up listening to much compressed signal. For me, it’s bass, amp, patch cord. That’s not everyone though, and you have to respect what others are doing.
  3. I’m rehearsing with a band with the leader’s name affixed. Won’t bother me unless the current dynamics change. always wanted a pub band named “free beer”
  4. I think the perfect instrument has to grow on you. I bought a l2000 tribute thinking, at the time, it would be a great workhorse, but we never quite got along. This has happened to me a couple of times. But, the ones I count on have never impressed me that much at first glance.Plus, I am convinced that you have to gig with a bass under different circumstances (pop, rock, country, pit work) to really know what you’ve got.
  5. Were these guys as good? Did they draw a crowd? I do understand your frustration, because in my experience, pub owners like to hang onto their money.
  6. I don’t understand the vitriol either. As someone trying to break back into to gigging scene, I would be very happy with £50 at the end of the night. How much would I make sitting at home?
  7. My Gotoh tuners need some work. Hey buddy know where I can get the washers that go between the knobs and the tuner shafts?
  8. Naw...we did it during the war, when you were looking the other way....:) Didn't you notice all the sheep facing the other direction?
  9. Don't blame us.....we don't usually drink that much Fosters...hmmm...beach, Aussie beer....
  10. I wonder about the difference in bolt-on vs through neck construction. Mine is through neck, and is both very stable and resonant. It makes sense to me that a stronger neck to body join would help to improve the consistency of a low B.
  11. Agreed, but what is the basics that would allow a good sound and feel from the B string....I'll admit I have only really played on 2 five-string basses, so have limited experience here.
  12. Essex certainly has a prettier coastline than Florida....
  13. I think “perfect “ may mean several things. I have had basses that felt great the first time I picked them up…a 63 Jazz springs to mind. Then there are basses that take some time to appreciate…my 78 RD Artist and this current MPV are examples…not love at first sight, but they just keep growing on you. These usually end up being the better tools for me, and the ones I keep.
  14. I am relatively new at 5'ers but, so far, here is my experience... -Heavier gauge strings have a more profound overtone "thump"...I use a 125 B with light gauge Elixer nanowebs -I raised the action a bit...that seemed to help clarify the tone..kinda like a classical guitarist does -Find the "sweet spot" on your bass. Mine is pretty even, but, still, it sounds great on all strings between the 5th and 12th fret. -If you are playing with fingers on your right hand, try "floating" your thumb over the strings, muting when needed, instead of anchoring somewhere. I got this from a really great bassist I know, and it have really cleaned up my 5-string playing. Not so noticeable on a 4. -Use a light touch on the B string. Hope some of this helps. I have not played many other 5 string basses and am a bit spoiled with mine. I think the Ebony board helps as well.
  15. Florida is to the US what Essex is to the UK.....just sayin'
  16. Honestly...I come from small-town, rural Nebraska and I really do love my little village...
  17. Nope...just feel like him...random American stumbling through and learning how to love the UK...
  18. Lots of experience, and willing to sit in for country, rock, blues, pit work, some jazz ( I do read charts pretty well). I have good transportation and good gear, tend to play simply and get out of everyone else's way. Willing to do dep work to get more well known in this area (Cambridgeshire). BTW, as an American (retiring here) I am unfamiliar with the word "dep"....we would say "Sub"...just curious what "Dep" is short for....
