1. Word of advice mate, if you want to make it sound even better, change the valve out to a high quality Mullard or something like that. I've heard reports from guitarists that doing this makes it sound a whole lot better. I've got a Zoon G2 and its great for recording guitar parts. Zoom do good multi-FX units.
2.
Bit of a rant here. Trying to book up a bunch of gigs from September through till December. Only around 8 so not lots. Contacted lots of promotors who I know are looking for bands to play, are asking for bands on their webpage/myspace page to play or the venues direct who are asking for band. I contact them, gig them some background on the band, a link to our Myspace page but do any of them get back to you? Like hell they do. Total waste of time. Just finding it very hard to get gigs at the moment and very frustrating. Anyone else have problems with promotors/getting gigs?
The truth is a lot of bands - even established bands are finding it hard at the moment. Many promoters don't want to risk wasting money on acts that will not get them a return and to be fair, I don't blame them. Many of the promoters on the scene I'm involved with are cutting back on putting gigs on as they are losing money. The recession is hitting the live music scene at the moment, too many bands chasing too few an audience.
3. f***sticks! Yesterday I paid £22 for one set of 4 String Elites at the Bass Cellar in Denmark Street. I didn't see this thread and would have had the two off you. Oh well
4.
This is heavy. http://www.myspace.com/rifffilledland
Not bad, but if its heavy / doom / sabbath you want - this lot take some beating... http://www.myspace.com/downnola Lifer is a killer song.
5. Mate, I've just bought a Traben John Moyer with a Chaos bridge and the output and sound from the thing is incredible. Like a cross between a Spector and a MM Stingray on steroids. Well worth looking at if its metal you want to play.
6. Anyone know where you can buy these in the UK ? I haven't seen them on Ebay UK or even the Ebay US either
7.
Thanks mate, I'm open to any and all suggestions on that one.
How about you just give it to me for free..?
8. Reminds me a bit of early Killswitch Engage - only a lot shittier... f*** me, they're awful.
9. PM'd

11.
Borrow a 6-string from someone, suffer with it until it don't seem so bad, then get a 5-string. Suddenly you'll love it
You joke but thats exactly how I got into playing 5-Strings. I used to play 4-strings and one day got a Status S-2 6-String and played that for years. I always like the low B but had no real use for the high C string. When I got my first 5-string it just felt right and now I only play 5-string basses.
12. Just did another recording - clean direct into soundcard... Traben Bass - Clean Direct Into Soundcard
13. Just thought of a good tribute band name for him... "The Bryan Ferry Disaster"
14.
Blimey!! Cool overdriven sound. Don't think you'll be getting any jazz gigs in the near future
Cheers mate, there's a Sansamp VT on the end of that with a little bit of grit added to the mix.
15. Just got delivery of a Traben John Moyer 5-string Signature bass with Chaos bridge, Rockfield pickups and pre-amp. Its a really nice bass with a neck similar to my Yamaha TRB5 (very wide and slim). Reasonably light and sound wise its quite versitile. Reminds me a lot of a Stingray. Anyway, judge for yourself by having a listen to the sound clip below...
16. I always fit straplocks to my basses and guitars. I just wouldn't trust any other way of support for a guitar. Schaller are probably the most commonly used out there but Warwick, Dunlop and Boston make good straplocks.
17. To get that tone you have to pray to the Lord!! "Lord we thank you for skateboards" LOL!!
18. Played in Sweden at an outdoor festival to around 1000 people. Great atmosphere, great sound, good weather, free beer, food and accomodation. Life don't get better than that !
19.
Bring back Sounds (w/o Bushell, the beady-eyed, no-neck arm-twitcher)
Bushell's page was about the best thing about that paper in the early 1980s.
20. I'm probably going to piss everyone off here but I hate that song - mainly for the crap lyrics and the bassline. I think it just doesn't fit well with the drums or the song. Just my opinion.
21.
That's interesting - that's an ash bodied one. The maple versions were completely back. Maybe my memory isn't what I thought is was.
Could have something to do with the fact I was a complete wimp when I was 13
22. I've got the Mk VI - great sound and as you say, loud as hell, especially at 2 Ohms!
23.
I was going to put a thread on about Westones. My drummer took the p@*s when I said that was my first bass. But it would appear they are generally well regarded.
Loads of people in the 80s used Westones - they were the cheaper version of the Aria Pro range and were great basses. The Matsumoko factory was churning out some great stuff then and Westones - especially the Thunder series were great basses. The QC and build on them was amazing when you compare it with stuff nowadays. There was a lot of snobbery back then in the bass world - if it wasn't a Fender or Musicman you tended to get looked down on, especially as Westones were available in the Freemans catalogue (no jokes about the lingerie section please... ). Seeing as most teenagers were skint back then, stuff like Aria and Westone were a god-send. One thing I do remember is that their active pre-amps used to eat batteries at a rate of knots.
24. Kent Armstong are a really good value for money pickup - especially their Vintage Hot P-bass pickup. I put one is a Squier and it sound the dogs knackers. Only cost about £25.
