Hopefully not to add another conflicting point. But as Fatback said, if the seller is honest its all good. The guy i bought my bass of was so trusting he let me take the bass of him without paying a penny so i could bring it to my teacher and see what he thought. I then went to Scotland got stuck there because of the volcano's in Iceland, and eventually paid him two weeks later after being in full contact with him about what was going on. So possibly see if you can pay a deposit if you do find a localish second hand bass and bring it to a Luthier or a professional to check out. But any way good luck and hopefully you find something so you can get playing as soon as possible.

I wouldn't worry to much about cracks especially on the front. If the neck seems like its dodgy dont bother. I have a few cracks in the front of mine, some just the finish others right through and i was told to leave them for a couple of months more till they settle and then its simple job or sewing and gluing them back up. Also in your price range i would hazard that most of the second hand bass's will have a more open, fuller sound due to being played in especially if the person before you mainly used a bow. My bass cost me 1200 and i have it valued and insured for 3500. Its a beat up Romanian bass about 50 years old, cracks beat around, scruffy around the edges, full of character, huge sound. Great for what do and the only thing that needs doing are the cracks eventually sown up(a couple of months) the fingerboard taken down a bit and extended. The last too dont really need to be done but i'd like them to be done. There's some great bass's out there that'd suit you perfectly for not much money. Also another place to look(i dont know if you have many of them buy) is convents/loreto's, schools that used to have orchestra's, usually bought a bass or two and are now getting dusty.

Id get all the money i had and buy the best possible bass i could, leave out a mic, preamp, pickup etc until later. Youll be getting used the bass and practicing for a couple of weeks if not a month or two before you take it out on the road. Maybe keep using your EUB and double the amount of money you have to spend and look around for a Bryant as Floydelgar says or any other bass. It will save you money down the road when your looking to upgrade and the next step up might be over 10K. Also keep an eye on musicalchairs. Now and end again slightly cheaper bass's pop up there. If your completely set on getting one straight away ive played a few different thomann one's and they've all been ok to decent. EDIT: oh and if your looking to rent maybe you could get lucky like i did when i started. I rented one my teachers spare bass's for a 10er a month or something close for a year. If your looking to get regular lessons this might be an option.

Work out every possible fingering from every possible position and go out of your comfort zone.

Looks really nice, i recently ordered a new case from gedo music and they were really helpful and very quick in delivering it. My only gripe with the bass is that in Thumb position and moving into thumb position wouldn't your arm be more likely to drop? Maybe watch out for bad habits up there.

Just the one double bass double bass at the moment. I cant see the point as yet in getting another even if id really like too. The step up would be 10K plus. Maybe when i start getting payed for rehearsals as well as concerts ill know its time that i can get another. What i really do need though is a new bow and i have no idea were im going to get the funds or the time to travel around and try a lot out. 3 electric bass's though, 1 amp, 1 trumpet, 1 tiny keyboard, 1 guitar. It all takes up too much space as it is in my tiny apartment.

Been meaning to try Kolstein. How do you find it, compared to say nymans, which i did like but prefer the pops over the nymans.
-
Ive only had my pops for about a month but its always soft. If im walking to a rehearsal and it gets a bit hard in the cold, i run a lighter quickly over the top to soften it up. Really enjoying this rosin, compared to the pete's i had for a couple of weeks. I loath pete's.

Yep a mirror is one of the best practice tools, spend your first couple of weeks playing in front of one to make sure nothings going askew. You can keep an eye on your fingers as well as your bowing technique.

Did you use your Mb500 with a DB at all? Any eq settings. I cut some bass and treble and left everything flat with the contour all the way off. Seemed to work quite nicely with my bass.

I gigged my new setup of a revolution solo pickup and my GK mb500 and 1x12 neo cab a few nights ago for the first time with a loudish folky style group, without a preamp in between the pickup and the amp. Got very loud and no feedback at all.I must have looked a bit of a dick though with a double bass on my back and a trolley with amp in front walking to and from the gig but still it worked and i was very surprised and best of all it sounded good. Also works really well with electric. Very light, loud and not too expensive. Im planning of getting an f-deck preamp possible, anyone used one?

Some poeple do a few of long stroke's of rosin and others do a lot of short strokes until they get from the frog to the tip. I do several long strokes. I also find with nymans you dont need a huge amount compared to other rosins.

I emailed thomann about that one an it doesn't come with wheels, they just haven't changed the picture. Anyone have experience with this case. http://www.tomandwill.com/productdetail.asp?productid=47BS34-465

I was just about to ask the same question, all the straps managed to break on my way back from my orchestra rehearsal, luckily the bass was ok. Not to hijack the thread but is there a similarly priced bag but also with wheels?
-
I've got a GK neo 112 and its brilliant. Very light to get around, and with my mb500 its gets ridiculously loud for one 12" speaker. Also handles a b pretty damn well as long as your not looking for a deep sub sound. Planning on getting a second one pretty soon. I was also looking at the focus 112 and mark at bassdirect did recommend it to me, but i went with Gk as, iirc, it had a bit more power or db or similar, in case i went for a different head in the future.

There are pro's and cons to each one, but as everyone has mentioned go with whatever your teacher mainly uses. I use French simply because all my teachers have used french.

Ive got a similar one, does the job. Only really annoying thing is, you have to push the end pin back in when you want to put it on the stand. For some reason it bothers me.

Great stuff thanks very much. Arent Vanhal pieces in Viennese tuning? or are there adaptions? Cheers. EDIT: Were's a good place apart from amazon to buy sheet music?

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but ive been looking for some solo double pieces to start learning over the summer and then work on with my teacher in September. Im currently working on the duet in Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi and ive been listening to Bottesini's Elegy. Im looking for something between the standard of these pieces but say easier then Bottesini's concerto's. So i hope that gives a sort of level. Ive also been looking at simandl's 30 etudes, are these worth a buy? So in short, what are some great musical double bass solo pieces that are good for getting into that sort of territory and to get used to reading bass, tenor and treble smoothly in concert tuning. Cheers Sam H

Edinburgh bassists please help! Train woes....
fatgoogle replied to Hector's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Ive done about a 3 hour trip with no hassle with my double bass on a train. I just left it a corner by the dorr, tied the straps to the handles and read my book for the journey. It got some funny looks but otherwise was fine. -
what else to practice with in 1/2 position ?
fatgoogle replied to thunderbird13's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Have you got simandl. The book has no end of exercise's in all positions and keys. -
I havent got one but my teachers have them and use it only for bowing amplified, they do say it is boomy and muffled pizz. Ive heard underwoods do sound nice with fingers and i hate my fishman bp-100 but others have got a good sound from theirs. Sam.

Anyone compared an AC to an AV bass, ive tried the AV bass's and i know there's one at bass gear and all the ones ive tried have been top notch and also worth the hefty price. Its just the headstocks are quiet similar and reckon some of the ergonomics might be as well.

I have a fane 15 400 in a cab i made on a recommendation from phil, it is pretty damn good, and has never let me down even when it got soaked carrying it to a gig. Id use one again if i wwas replacing speakers.
