1. Hey fellas, I've been stuck in a bit of a rut with the line6 bass pod (I've got the xtlive, floorboard version) and am casting about for inspiration. I've got an audition this evening and would like a nice chunky fuzzy sound - think a bit softer than XTRMNTR era Mani. Anyone got any tips/settings/cool bits for this? Or if anyone knows of a good resource on the net...
2. Remember: Women are the enemy. They only date you so they can stop you from having fun. When you live together, they own the entire house. You'd do anything for a quiet life. She's intractable and doesn't understand why you need 3 basses, which is insane, because of course you need three basses - they sound imperceptibly different from one another and one doesn't have frets so it sounds even shittier in my sh*tty prog band! Women hate to see you smile or enjoy yourselves. If it looks like you're about to buy something new, they will get knocked up so that you have to spend money on the child. Christ, some of you guys are pathetic. And I don't mean that in a "You're such doormats" sense. I mean it in a "If you view your relationship in terms of trying to placate one another or in terms of gaining permissions or sneaking around, then of course you're going to be miserable and have a sh*tty relationship". These are your partners, people, you're supposed to be on the same f------n team!
3. Or at least, boo them for not making the effort to get in contact with the booked acts. If you've just taken on a new business, I don't think you should be under any obligation to carry it on in the same way as the last owner. They should be free to cancel old bookings. But they do have to tell the booked acts.
4. Cool thread - I find it really interesting that there are so many different takes on the bass. Me: Male 24 years old 4 strings Passive Jazz 50% pick, 50% fingers Minimal effects - I own a POD XTlive but haven't tinkered with it enough. I'm in love the basics. My bass idols are Peter Hook, Mani (XTRMNTR best!), Gang of Four, ESG etc. I don't like slapping or popping or tapping or YYZ or Dream Theater or Wooten or Jaco or Willis. I love simple bass parts that lock right into the drums and tie a song together. Favourite bass parts of recent weeks - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's first album. I prefer to be in a band, and for the singer-songwriters to have the basic concept that I can work on.
5. I f**in hate music. Rubbish stuff, it is. Thanks a million billion trillion oxblood and everyone else for those magnificent mp3 links. Wonderful!!!!!!!!!
6. Hot damn Delberthot, that is one gorgeous bass in your avatar. Nice!
7. I like mowtownh. A lot. It makes me very happy to listen to it.

9. I had to bring a bass back from Japan last year. I wasn't trying to buy it on the cheap, though - I'd been living out there for a couple of years and owned it out there for half that time. Didn't have a receipt for it or anything. Walked through customs with it with no problems at all.
10. 1) Pino was a session guy during the Who. +1 to redroque. 2) I like Jools Holland because the cameramen just do nice slow pans with no silly filters. And because they have that jam at the beginning. And because Jools' interviews are often amusing. And because the music is vaguely eclectic. 3) I don't see any reason why Wentz' bass shouldn't be a squier. Them squier's are getting to be pretty good. I think it's wonderful when you see someone famous using an instrument on tv that kids in the audience could possibly afford - how inspiring. 4) It seems odd that with concert DVDs they don't have an extra feature where you can focus on one player for the show - wouldn't cost much to slap a feature like that on, and the market for 'MUSE in Wembley Special Edition: with extra Disc Featuring Matt Bellamy's fretboard for an hour' would actually be pretty significan, I reckon. 5) I'm not too bothered about bassists being filmed.

14. Me + the scroggins sisters. Play that funky no-wave beat!
15.
I can't agree with you more. One of the reasons I'm punting my Jaco stuff, etc. I'm done with buying CDs because, as a bassist, I should listen to them.
Word. I made a great thread a while back with no mention of Jaco in it at all!
16.
to fill a 1U space, the best thing to put in is a blank panel (with grills/slots in) and put a bright blue "rope light" thing behind it, or something like that.
Hey Ant, what bass is that in your avatar? From the scrap I can see of it, it looks gorgeous!
17.
Absolutely, hopefully this should help clear things up:
Awesome! Why do you eq the signal twice?
18.
Style was probably the wrong word; I think I meant playing notes (however simple and whatever style) so that it sounds musical rather than just a sequence of notes. Is the word I'm looking for rhythm? At the moment I'd like to play a few tunes or riffs that feel musical. For example, Rapper's Delight and Deeper Underground are both enjoyable to play but are also probably beyond me (to give an indication of performance); sometimes they sound/ feel good to play, other times just a bunch of notes played sequentially. Haven't got Reason although I do use a PC metronome; I'll look into it. No eggs being sucked
Glad you're finding some of this helpful. You shouldn't put it off - even if you don't get it immediately, learning a bit of theory at the beginning is very helpful. "Add some thirds of fifths" In the example Skywalker gave you, he suggested playing "C-C-C-C-F-F-C-C-G-F-C-C" when he says 'thirds' he means 'the third note in the root's scale' and by 'fifths' he means 'the fifth note in the roots scale' So the scale of C goes: C D E F G A B ©. Imagine these notes are numbered 1-7: C D E F G A B 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 The fifth is the fifth note, C D E F G A B C So Skywalker was saying, when you're happy playing "C-C-C-C-F-F-C-C-G-F-C-C", try throwing a G in where you' put a C: C-C-C-G-F-F-C-C-G-F-C-C or C-G-C-C-F-F-C-C-G-F-C-C or even C-G-C-G-F-F-C-G-G-F-C-G. Some will sound a bit weird, some will sound great. Not sure how well I explained that.
19. I'm not sure how good you are, so apologies if this is teaching you to suck eggs. Do you have any kind of drum computer? I've got a copy of reason with lots of different drum loops which I play with in my room a lot to get used to playing along to different drum types. The best way to get into the groove of a tune if you're not sure what's going on: listen to the drummer. Start your bassline by playing the root notes, or very conservative notes (like, say, the fifth of the root) when the drummer kicks the bass drum. And only when the drummer kicks the bass drum. Straightaway you'll thicken and bolster the natural accent of the groove, and you'll suddenly have a rhythm section where before you had two musicians. Keep on those notes for a while, listening very carefully. Where would an extra note sound good? Where would playing a note other than the root or fifth work well? Then just try adding bits, and taking bits away, always mindful of the kick. That (in my humble opinion) is a good way to be playing music in a song, not just playing appropriate notes in time.
20. Thanks Mr Muppet. I even have a cab now! It's actually THIS (Wednesday) evening, Mr slaphappy. I was perhaps being a little vague. Just time to listen to their songs 2-300 more times before the session!
