Lemmy, Peter Hook, JJ Burnel and Steve Harris all had some techniques that weren't as per the textbooks. Imagine if Larry Graham had stuck with the technique that his teacher taught him rather than trying something different.

As I suspected, a few different techniques. I think I'll have to sit down and spend several hours with each practicing scales to see what feels right

I just ordered a guitar for child no2. An Ibanez GRX120SP (catchy name). She loves her little Ibanez Micro and this has the same neck profile and only 1mm wider at the nut. I'm sure she'll like the metallic blue colour as well.

I've mostly played with a pick with the odd bit of finger style now and then but I should make efforts to improve my technique. I think my biggest issue is I generally leave my thumb on the pickup or maybe rest it on the A string when picking the D or G. What's your technique?
