its gone!
ebay have pulled it. Good work someone! -
If it makes you feel any better... this time last week I was in 3 bands. I'm now in none!
Wimps who won't gig, material that I don't really like and a female singer (hmmmm not found one I can really work with yet and that includes the wife) have conspired to leave me in a position where I'm NOT selling up but I will be busy knocking on doors and calling people up for names and recommendations!
Don't get shot of everything, if nothing else keep a bass under the bed. -
Wow.... that's weird! I've never heard of anyone having any problems....
Did you try it in different buildings as well as with different basses? Just wondering if it was something to do with the mains in your house...?
Amongst other things WoT tried it in my house, with my basses and cab! -
It isn't always a fool-proof test but you can gently push the cone centre back (press gently with fingers placed around the dust cap) and then release to see if there is significant scratching or if a coil is seized. Speakers will sometimes still operate fine if there is some scratchiness but it will be a dead giveaway if one is much worse than the other.

That's Ms. D Ork or should that be Dork... you'd have to be to be suckered into this one. -
OK , here it is.....pheew!
Yep, that little recessed slot surrounded by a blue circle adjusts the active output. You can either use it to set the active and passive volumes to a similar level or if you use your bass in active mode all of the time use it to match the level of your other bass (alternatively assuming both Warwicks have the same trim-pot, adjust them both to get a happy compromise). Watch the front end of your amp can cope with any increase in output (i.e. start from scratch with your input gain) and though it shouldn't distort if turned up, use your ears to check that it isn't too high. -
Yes, he's fitted LEDs to several instruments (including a gorgeous WAL Mach 3 in paduak) including guitars and the plain reason I recommend him to all on the forum is that he's that good and not just with the worlds best LED system.
I'm seriously enthusiastic and even handed in my recommendation of anyone that is really good so others can benefit but especially Martin because he is that good. Look at the roster of famous musicians that have trusted their personal instruments to his hands and abilities and then there's Fender Europe who get him to do so much of their custom work. There are other workshops out there but Martin's first call for Fender.
LEDs in a Status, WAL, GB, Shepherd, Manson, Feline, Warwick, Yamaha, etc, etc...all done by Martin.
Seriously, speaking from years of experience in the biz Martin runs one of the pre-eminent custom shops in the world now as he offers not just his world renown LED system but his spray shop, custom work and now the ability to literally create any bass or guitar with his CNC system you'd care to imagine, he would have to be near the very top of any recommended luthier listing for bass builders. I can't mention any names but he's now often the first call for new prototype instruments to be built because he's really that good. So, obviously, if the foregoing is true his good name just has to be spread??
Ciao

Poor guy when does he sleep never mind find time to take a holiday! -
The small recessed screwdriver slot is the trim-pot for the output, my Bart equipped Streamers have identical pots. Adjusting the output can have a marked effect on the overall tone so you may want to experiment.
OK ....so had another look in the cavity and....ehhhh...rather embarinsing....all the pots are are marked...ahemm.....MEC....not bartolini....so I guess I have bart pups (yes I checked again..
....and a MEC pre.....no potentiometer for adjusting the active passive output/balance though.
Ooops
Is there a preamp block like this?
This is the trimpot in one of my Warwicks. -
Looks a bit dodgy to me - the machineheads are way too close to the edge of the headstock:
The spacing from the edge is all over the shop, random hand drilling or what. I'd be concerned what other corners had been cut in it's production. -
Only get a workshop that really knows what they are doing here not someone that thinks as it looks like a major bit of tech investigation/diagnosis and first aid is required.
To save sending the whole bass, take the neck off and send it to a quality workshop - me I'm biased, it would have to go to Martin Sims at the SimS Custom Shop.
www.simscustom.com - drop him an email or call him next Monday.
Snding the neck well bubble-wrapped and boxed via Royal Mail Special Delivery is the most cost effective secure way of shipping it to him or to anyone else like Martin.
Hope this helps!
Ian
South Africa to SIMS via Royal Mail may be expensive and risky -
I hate it when listings have large font size like that it makes it a pain in the backside to read and I switch straight off!
I'll take it!
A wise choice sir.... it was the price that was the decider wasn't it!
I've not had confirmation from another interested party so it's yours.
I'm replying to your PM re. payment. -
The mid frequency is adjustable via a small potentiometer under the back cover.
Just a quick ask. Do you know for sure that the trimpot in the back of the Warwick is for mid frequency? You are probably right especially if it just has a single mid knob but the reason that I ask is that on all of the 'W' 4's that I've ever owned, the trimpot is to balance the active output against the passive. Have a quick scan around the cavity and see if there is a second trim pot. If there is you will be able to match the outputs of the two basses.
As for the tonal differences between the basses you're probably already aware that you'd probably never be able to get one tone to sound like the other even if you fitted identical pups and pre. The wood, mass and construction will impart their own stamp on the tone.
If you aren't sorted in the next few weeks I may be able to give you some help. I'm replacing the MEC circuitry in one of my basses for a Demeter, if you want to trial my circuit in your bass I'd 'lend' you the pre and pots. It may give you some insight into whether you like the sound of your pups or if an MEC circuit is for you. -
Get a 6 instead go on u know it makes sense
Incidently ive never found a 5 im comfortable with but i can play a trb1006 just aswell as my pbass
Nope. 4's only for me along with my new rule of no Fenders!
I do have to say that this Bolin is soooo comfortable, the weight and balance is great. I had some reservations as I thought the bodied looked large but it isn't. So much so that if I do get the opportunity to bag a 4 string version of this bass I'll be taking it with absolutely no qualms.
Restrung and ready to go in OHSC. £740 collected or organise your own courier. -
As you say Nik, it was delivered safe and sound and no need to test out insurance liability, so a happy customer; just like I was with Interparcel. However, can you put hand on heart and say that you'd send a £500-£1000+ fragile instrument like a bass without knowing full well that you'd be covered? Even with insurance I always have a bit of a sleepless night or two if I sent anything through a courier, I couldn't even begin to imagine what I'd be like if I wasn't insured or I wasn't 100% clear on the T&C of the insurance.
Ideally I'd like to hear from people who've had to make claims against couriers, as that's the real test of any insurance cover... then again even if someone was paid full compensation for a claim would I want to use the courier after they'd trashed someone else's gear -
Interparcel delivered the bass safe and sound and it cost £40 (inc insurance). No issues or problems so they seem OK!
When you say I disagree with APC's insurance policy that's a bit of a misnomer... they have a very clear policy, you can't insure it with them.
Looking at the start of the thread the first courier up there is APC with +4 and no negatives, with people giving it praise left right and centre, that's why I went to use them before any other. However, as members of the general public our valuable instruments wouldn't be covered AT ALL. I'd love some of the APC users who've commented on this thread to give us some insight into how they feel knowing that they had no insurance when they sent their instruments, I'd be furious.
Be assured I've checked yet again that APC's policy is no insurance to non-account holders, I rang a different branch yesterday afternoon and asked for a quote to send a guitar to London and I wanted it insured; I got a quote for £15 but was told there was no insurance cover nor could it be purchased separate! I don't have any beef with APC they are well within their rights to only offer insurance to account holders, hence I wouldn't argue that they warrant any negativity but let's get real, it certainly needs a big red flag to warn people that their instrument won't be insured at all. -
We all know that a 4 and 5-string bass are quite different beasts to master but oh how about some 'wipe on wipe off' effort as once you've adjusted to the delights of the 5 with a killer low B to boot it opens up new musical vistas; surely worth perservering??
In 99% of cases probably. However I'm an old dog and my style of attack the bass as an old and trusted friend doesn't lend itself to simple mind tricks like adjusting for one more string
I'm not some bass ludite but I know what I do and I do it (moderately) well, unfortunately others do the 5 (far) better. I love our instrument the bass and I like to do it justice, hence my very rare desire to play something that doesn't bear the big 'W'... so does anyone have a Bolin 4, even if it isn't for sale? -
I remember when they were reviewed in Bass Player, drool worthy or what, seriously a very nice instrument and don't let go of it! Thanks for some nice pics too!
Unfortunately I am finally establishing that a) I'm not a Fender guy,5 is one string too many and c) I'm probably going to regret selling this!
-
Lickle bump for the inclusion of pics.
Nobody got a Bolin 4? -
Strange??
I can only suggest that you call and speak to Andy at UK Sameday (which is part of the APC group) because he was absolutely categorical on this issue. His number is 01244 533533.
Nik
It's great when you complain and they give you a managers number... 7.30 phonecalls don't get diverted!
Mystery solved.
UK Sameday are a 3rd party user of APC, they aren't APC, they use the APC service. It seems that this common practice in the industry and though Julie at APC (first name terms now) wouldn't personally confirm UK Sameday were a 3rd party user (jobsworth), she said that if they used the APC logo then that would be the case... and UK Sameday do.
Our brief conversation revealed that all over the UK there are companies that as business users will take your booking but then place that order with another courier, especially if they don't have a lot of custom in a particular area.
There is a potential fly in the ointment re. insurance. It is subject to completely different terms and conditions for 3rd party users... couldn't ascertain what that meant but she was very vague and evasive. -

Ah... so you're not going to be driving any cab with a measly 150 watts. The Acmes do make sense then. -
What amp do you intend using?
