1. Thanks for all the responses, at least I now know that I wasn't missing anything obvious (other than eBay attracts more than it's fair share of fools). I'll also take on board the various suggestions including mailing random wrong items to any fellow BCers that might bid on my items :)

    Thanks again.

  2. With the recent upturn in Wal prices, £800 (with £50 shipping from the States) appears a good price (or is it) BUT... watch out as it is a 24 hour listing. I'm always wary of why anyone would want to sell something so expensive without giving it the maximum exposure. If you have it on a BIN why not listed it for the maximum 10 days?

Tread carefully if this is your kind of thing.

  3. I can appreciate that they are great musicians and performers but I'm definately a basic kind of bloke who prefers songs with hooks and choruses. Hats off to any band that can still keep knocking it out to such a standard (and with the same line up) for soooo long. Thanks for the pic BTW , I'm sure that's the back of my mates baldy head about 5/6 rows in front of you.

  4.
Theres nowt at all wrong with your listing Ebay is just full of numpties!!!

Out of curiosity how much do they normally go for? Tempted to bid myself. If I win how do I know which one I'll get ? is it pot luck?!! I'll get my coat :)

    Mike
I'm glad the consensus is that it's users that are daft and not me.

re. you being tempted... You know what eBay is like! If you check out my feedback you'll see that I've sold them for anything from £10 - £20. If you want to stick a bid in I'll do 10% discount to any BCer.

  5. This is a personal request. I list stuff on eBay on a regular basis (some BCers have bought my items when it was under a different user name) so I am no numpty BUT... I have some items that are attracting the same stupid questions everytime that I list them. Could you look at the listing with fresh eyes and tell me if I'm missing something.

The problem is that people are constantly asking the same inane questions (see at the botom of the listing). Following previous listings where I got the same questions I've made revisions, I think I've made the listing pretty clear?

The listing may not be perfect and you don't need to analyse it, just have a quick look and tell me if it is massively confusing or do you understand what you would win if you bid.

Check out the thread posted about couriers that can be used for a bass guitar, I know that 'senditnow' charge £11 if it weighs less than 30kg (that's 11p per issue for delivery) and I'm sure there are others that are cheaper. You also needn't worry about potential damage as you would for a bass.

  7.
Totally!

The 'how many times' referred to how often do we have to try and kill this myth???

Sorry if I was unclear... :)
Agreed!

If you've never owned a Thumb you don't know what you're talking about. If you have owned one and it neck dived... it was either a new one (which I profess I can't comment on) or you forgot to fasten the strap to the top button.

  8.
How many times....??

I currently have three thumbs and none of them have neck dive!!

The body has the mass of a small black hole...HTF can there be neck dive?
Yes!

I'm confused... aren't we agreeing on this? :)

  9. Started on bass and I've always played bass in a band however I took to playing guitar 10 years or so back and I have a love afair with 12 string acoustics! I've decided to learn the clarinet so that I can experience first hand the difficulties of learning an instrument alien to my normal listening or playing.

    Surely not.
Yeh... NOT.

The only feedback that'lll be left for that will be negative. The buyer is from the USA, that'll be about $6000 + shipping and you can find them in the States for a lot less than that. Alternatively it will appear back up for sale saying buyer had to pull out blah blah blah (probably a mate in the States doing the supposed buying) and the seller will be hoping some sucker that was watching it will jump in and buy it this time.

  11.
Warwick changed from using wenge to ovangkol on the bolt-on's to help tackle the neck dive problem according to Seth Horan (endorsee and demo/clinic bloke!). I'd imagine the same applies to the neck-thru models.
I've owned 5 NT Thumbs (all pre 91) and not a single one suffered from neck dive!

  12.
I am in the process of looking for a used 4 string thumb. just wondering what to look for ie where the serial numbers are and how to date them and how much they go for?.

    Cheers
NT or BO? I can give 'some' help (or can I) with the NT early models but the BO... sorry!

Pre 91/92 the dates are stamped on the top of the headstock, the last two numbers give you the year, the letter at the start, the month (A = Jan B = Feb etc don't include I). After 91/92 it moved to the back of the headstock between the tuners.

Early Thumb's came with a pair of Jazz pups from either (and not exclusive to) MEC EMG Bartolini Seymour Duncan and the earliest models had a JD logo on the truss rod cover with routing to the rear of the headstock and 1 piece bridge. The routing then disappeared as did the logo and 1 piece bridge. After about '95 changes were made right the way through to present day and you now have the Wenge necks and Bubinga bodies replaced by Ovankol and Pommele Bubinga (fancy name but the same stuff). Electrics have gone from 2 band to 3 band along with a multitude of subtle body shape changes. Essentially it's the same bass but the changes may not impress all and it really pays to try a few different models from each era.

Price... here's where it's a lottery. I've had them from £500 to £1000. Age, condition, spec etc all affect price but not half as much as how hard up the owner is!

    <edit>

Damn he went and bought a Stingray in the time it took me to type a reply... I blame the alcohol for slowing down my typing skills.

  13. If you are having them professionally duplicated rather than running off a dozen yourself then the duplicator should be applying for the licence anyway and the cost should be in your total bill. I worked for a tape duplication company for 7 years and this was part of my job, it cost the band peanuts per 100 and ensured that the song writer got their just rewards... you know it makes sense!

  14.
There is definitely a lot to be said for tall slim and relatively lightweight cabs that can be easily wheeled about yet are light enough to pick up on your own. The Bill Fitzmaurice Omni 15TB that I'll be building next year is 2" shorter, 1" narrower, and the same depth as the Tech 6x10" and should weigh only about 5lbs more. Parts will cost about £250 but then I've got to build it!

    Alex
Again, another option that I considered but I went the route of 'no replacement for displacement', though I would dearly love to hear some of Bill's cabinet designs.

If you're handy with the old power tools and have the inclination to self-build then BFM or Thiele parameter design self builds could well save large wedges of cash whilst giving you low weight options (though I don't think you'll save on the volume... then again one cab with a couple of drivers and large volume may well outperform the current Neo equipped biggies).

  15. Just latched on to this thread and I should point out that there is the alternative to multiples (modular) cabs and the appropriate weight saving. I have to say that I agonised over the 2 small/medium sized cab v 1 big cab scenario for a long while. Though I have had moments where I've considered that 2 cabs might have made the logistics of being in 3 bands easier I am sooo glad I went for the one big 'light' cab. Like Dood I love the big trouser flap sound that you can achieve with cabs such as the Epi, Berg or Tech etc. and until recently I've never owned a 2x10 never mind a 4x10 that weighed less than my 30kg 6x10. Unbelievably it is actually also narrower than virtually any 210 or 410 that I've owned.

On balance if I was going to take all of a modular set-up to the majority of my gigs, I'd have to say that a big Neo equipped cab is the way to go BUT you do have to try before you buy as they aren't all the same! Dood and I will, I'm sure, one day get the chance to try these 6ers back to back and I for one can't wait to hear what similarity/differences there may be. Take into consideration that a pair of quality Neo cabs with multiple drivers (2x10 3x10 2x12 etc) will cost you the thick end of £1000 - £1500 and the combined weight of even the lightest pair will exceed 40kg, then a single 6x10 costing £800 - £1000 and weighing 8-10 kg less that can be wheeled (as the Tech and Epis can) in with one hand with gigbag on back and amp in other hand and you must have close to the ultimate one haul carry in!

I've had no issue with Neo reliability in my experiences with EBS 2x12, Tech 2x10 & 1x15 and my present 6x10.

  16. Oh dear he's just asking to have his auction stopped with the comment about not selling to the highest bidder even if they win... and yes I have read and understand the bit about 98%, 0 rated etc. but he unfortunately can't make that statement according to eBay rules.

Wonder what lurks under the leather (am I talking Ms Crowe or the bass!).

  17.
yeah the figuring on mine is a little odd. on the bass side of the strings it is ver straght grained but on the treb side it is really swirly. i just noticed that you had a different bridge. what model bridge would that be? how is the adjustablity? any idea how much the conversion to USD would be?
I'm sure jakesbass can answer for himself but just to help out, the bridge is the original Schaller unit that was fitted to all of the early Warwick's, it predates the 'W' 2 piece bridge. It is as adjustable as the later units. You can obviously alter the intonation (F&:), you can alter the action (U&D) but like the 2 piece bridge you can alter the string spacing (S2S). In fact altering the string spacing on the 1 piece Schaller unit is far easier than the 2 piece as all you have to do is turn the bridge saddle which is actually a grooved wheel.

Conversion is almost a straight $2 = £1. To get an accurate rate just 'google' currency conversion and you'll get a multitude of options, however remember bank/paypal rates vary a lot so shop about.

  18. You don't say if the amp damage is similar in each case, if it is I'd say yes you have a problem. Did it happen at the same venue, were you using the same leads etc. If there are no apparent connections between the incidents then I'd be looking at the way you have your gear set-up and from your comment, the way you power up and down. You could of course just be damned unlucky!
