1. I have to agree that if the musical style isn't something that you actually listen to regularly then certain chord progressions/structures can prove problematic... saying that I forget half of the Blues stuff my #2 band does and that is as straightforward as it gets but I just don't get into it! If it ain't fun and happening tell the band the song sucks and learn something more interesting/less challenging instead (delete where applicable)

Failing that take up the drums, all they do all night is sit and go 'boom crack boomboom crack' :) how hard can that be?

  2.
I love Warwicks, and if everything goes well should own my third by tomorrow. :) My avatar has me playing one (though it isn't clear).

But I was just surprised that all these videos had them all in quick succession. Especially as there is a good range in availablity to your rock/metal/whatever Kerrang plays bassists. Maybe it just goes to show that Warwick users do have good taste.
You didn't snag that eBay bargain did you?

  3. Do search on this forum and I'm sure it's been covered but to save time...

20+ years ago I/we were getting £160 shared between 4 of us, the usual pub fee for us has now gone up to a staggering £200 :)

In all seriousness I wouldn't entertain any gig for less than £180 (between 4) and we normally get £200, with some bigger better pub venues @ £240; Club gigs/Parties/Weddings and your 'starting' at £400 without having to hire in any gear, unless it's the dreaded 'Mates rates'. Most we got was £800 for 2x45 sets at Christmas but we are a pub rock covers band, so that wasn't bad.

  4. Of the interested 'Daft Geordies' is the morning (not TOOO early) of Sunday the 23 Sept any good?

I have no objections to my living room being turned over to a bass-fest (we are detached on that side) but it might make more sense if we hired a rehearsal room for a couple of hours (open to suggestions otherwise), I have a mate who could probably see is right with mates rates!

Either way I'll be doing some form of comparison/review (inc crossing preamps) of the gear that I have then posting it for consumption/dissection.

  5. As with all things reviewed you have to look deeper but I will say that I've read several reports of Carvin amplification having major reliability issues!

Balance the number of units sold against the frequency of failures and decide for yourself but I have to say when I researched the brand I decided to play safe and steer clear.

  6.
Are they compatible with the dunlop system? i.e will a Warwick male part fit into a Dunlop female part and vice versa?

    Clive
Yes!

  7.
I think you'd have won your argument, shxmusic -- if your reply hadn't been so heavy-handed.

Potential customers may draw the conclusion that you'll lay in to them like this, too, if there is a problem.

You've even had to "waste time" putting your case across, as your last paragraph explains. Wasn't this an ideal opportunity to win hearts and minds?

    Cheers

    Mark
Sorry I have to disagree... Fair does to SHX. I've been considering a Schroeder cab for a while (it would ease my troubles performing in 3 bands) and following the comments made by Chris I had 'almost' reached the conclusion that I may as well contact Jorg direct.

SHX have come back with what appears to be a valid and measured response; I don't see any more heavy handedness in the reply than I do in the original statements made by Chris. The response by SHX have certainly given me food for thought and I'm pleased to see that SHX care enough to 'waste time' responding.

  8.
Not really on topic for this thread, but a friend of a friend has started a "live karaoke" band where they have a spare vocal mic and encourage people to get up on stage and do their thing with the band. Apparently it's quite popular.
We had no choice but to try that last year when our vocalist rang (as we were finishing setting up) to say he couldn't make it. What a hoot it was! We invited punters to sing the ones that we couldn't manage... in hindsight even us struggling to hit 'some' of the notes would have been preferable to someone struggling to hit 'any' of the notes. Lesson learned was never believe people when they say that they can sing or they used to be in a band, p*ssed people and their friends lie a lot!

Actually this isn't so off topic as you'll probably have some plonker goaded by his/her mates to get up with you... your call on whether it turns into a farce or a right laugh!

  9. Noticed a seller on BC referring to selling stuff on gbase

The first one I decided to check out was a Warwick Corvette Basic 4 http://www.gbase.com/Stores/Gear/GearDetai...px?Item=1620472

... funny it looks just like a USA Spector 5 string! Hmmm 'gbase' a new place to waste time... and be scammed!

I'm not going to waste any more time trawling through any further.

  10.
Wow thanks for the great replies and information.

So with my valve amp, should i change the impediance selector to 8ohms and run a seperate cable out of the amp to the seperate speakers?

I dont like the sound of the very expensive output transformer breaking.
Do not run 2 x 8 ohm speakers from your amp with the selector on 8 ohms!

It doesn't matter if they are daisy chained or run from separate outputs, if you are using 2 x 8ohm cabs it must be on 4 ohms.

Take some time to read the info supplied as stickies on this forum.

  11. Strange effect the 'crazing in the paint' has, looks almost like the wood has cracked/splintered underneath!

Don't remember the 80's Squire that I owned (or any I played back then) ever having that neck chamfer/volute just above the neck/body join, so is he kidding himself about the age?

  12.
Thanx very much everyone. Heavy duty Speakon connectors are the way forward then i take it. Could anyone suggest a log lasting Speakon cable then please.
They are pretty much industry standard now and certainly on my gear... oh and I have one of OBBM's cables and they are the mutts nuts.

  13.
Now what about the other scenario: where you have your cabs chained, and the speaker cable to the first cab fails. This is the worst case of all. There will now be no load on the amp's output at all (i.e. an infinitely high impedance). If this happens you'd better hope that the amp designer has built in a protection circuit of some sort that cuts off the juice. With no load to dump power into and no protection circuit to save the day, the valves will produce enormous signal voltages which will damage the (very expensive) output transformer, and eventually the anodes of the valves will go into meltdown!   :):(
I stand corrected and have learned something new (for which I am grateful).

In which case there is a 'best' way to connect the speaker leads... that is as was suggested; 2 outputs from the amp each running to a separate cab.

  14.
but then us mugs are equally to blame for buying into the whole thing. I mean really what is the difference between a good mid range bass and a 'top' range bass?
If I come to see you play at a local venue will i really be able to tell if your bass lines, heard alongside the rest of your band, through a jack to jack, into a DI (2nd signal from mic infornt of cab), through a XLR cable into a multicore into a sound desk, through EQ, through compressors, through parametric EQ through cables, through an amp through speaker cable and into speakers, then, would i be able to tell the difference between you playing my cheapish CIJ Fender Pbass or your super Anniversary Custom Shop Limeted edition Fender Pbass?
    nah thought not
You do get diminishing returns the higher up the scale you go but then again it's the same for most things in life. Georgio Armani might use more expensive materials and labour but doesn't the clothing do the same job as something George produce, a Fiat will get you around the doors from a to B the same as a Ferrari, the average man won't get a better quality of time reading it from a £100,000 watch than he does a £10 (notice how I can't even name 2 watch manufacturers).

You are of course correct, though there is a significant difference between a starter bass and a decent mid/upper priced bass but higher than that you start to get differences rather than greater quality. Ultimately you get what you pay for but as someone who plays a Ltd Ed. bass I'm not about to swap it for a MIM/Far East production line jobbie!

Given the opportunity and choice are you going to drive around in a Ferrari or a Fiat and what will you be wearing and telling the time with?

  15.
Wow, I love your posts Oxblood. Always so informative.

A slight digression from the OP, but are two leads really better than daisy chaining? If a lead fails when daisy chaining you risk losing the sound out of both the cabs, but if a lead fails with two separate outputs doesn't that mean you could be using a single 8 ohm cab with the amp set to 4 ohms? I know using too low a cab impedance with a valve amp can be pretty disastrous, but there was some discussion on one of the older forums that using a valve amp into a higher load than it was set to didn't do it much good either. Or isn't that quite as bad?

It's just that I'd prefer to abandon a song half way through to sort out a lead rather than abandon a set and kiss goodbye to a nice valve amp at the same time. Or am I just misunderstanding what would happen if a lead fails and the dangers of using a valve amp into too high a load?
Unless the physics are different for valve amps (jump in valve experts), in the event of a lead failure to one cab (where you have to outputs going to two separate cabs) there would be no chance of damaging the amp running one 8 ohm cab if the amp were selected to run at 4 ohm. You would have a drop in volume but no damage would ensue. However, that isn't going to happen as we all use quality cables and check them periodically [sound of steps disappearing into the distance and the shuffling of gear as the gig case is retrieved].

  16. Anyone at a loose end on Saturday (8th) in or around the Newcastle area I'll be running through the Tech Blackcat and the Thunderfunk into the 6x10 at the Wooden Doll in North Shields. Be sure to step up and declare yourself just so that I know who to ask opinions of at the end of the night! Actually if you stick around until the end of the night you can have a share of my pizza... I kid you not this venue take your pizza order at the beginning of the the evening and have it hot and ready (and free) at the end of the night. Unfortunately I'm on strict orders that no pizza is to return to Chez Hunt.

  17.
my 70s V4B was ht enough for you not to want your hand on the back for 5seconds. Could someone clarify whether daisy chaining or going straight from both speaker inputs of the head is best please..... with impedence selector on 4ohms of course. Cheers
Best, doesn't really come into it. I realise several people have kind of answered your question above and they've said either/or is OK but that is the case; there is no best both will work!

To put your mind at ease if you have a pair of 8ohm cabs and your amp is set to 4ohms, with 2 outputs from your amp then I think you'll find that most people will run one output to each cab. As Alex said if the lead going to your 1st cab acts up then the 2nd cab isn't going to be achieving it's full potential or may get no signal, added to which if the 1st cab develops an internal wiring fault you'll be pulling your hair out trying to figure out what is wrong with cab 2.

In summary; 2 leads (heavy duty speaker cable NOT screened guitar leads) out of your amp one going to each cab!

  18. I personally 'kin hate Wedding Does!

As has been highlighted earlier you have a captive audience and no matter that the B & G and a dozen friends worship your musicianship the rest of the wedding party are trapped in a room with a bloody noisy band playing a racket (their view not mine). However, that said we all do them... unless the prospective customer contacts me rather than someone else in my band; in which case we're booked that weekend, "but I haven't told you the date yet"... yeh but we're booked permanently from now till Beelzebub gets a snowball in the kisser.

Not helpful to you what-so-ever, so I shall include something that hasn't been covered by the others.

Ensure you personally go along and see the actual room you will be playing in. You may not want to be too loud that you upset the OAPs but there's nothing worse than being told by the venue organiser/groom/bride/best man that you're PA is plenty big enough (WTF do they know) for the room and when you turn up you find you're playing an aircraft hanger with a 300w vocal rig. It will destroy your Kudos quicker than asking for a pork pie at a bar-mitzvar.

    Enjoy :)

  19.
Hi chaps,
I could be interested in joining you for a gear sesh!

    Gear I could bring:
    MB SA450
    TE MkV AH250
    C-Audio 1250 watt power amp
    ADA (remember them?) 1x15 + 2x10
    My wee JBL Eon15 monitor
    PJB Briefcase
Oh me oh my I can see a full scale bash developing at this rate!

As for tickets for my disappearing act :) they could be expensive as it's a once in a life-time show!

  20. Technically if the amp was designed without a fan it it shouldn't 'need' the fan to cool it BUT if one has been retro-fitted into the amp are you sure this has been done correctly. I'm no expert on things 'lectricky' but has it been wired in correctly. The other thing to consider, if it is fitted correctly is it exhausting from the casing adequately, not much point having a fan in there if the heat isn't being dissipitated!

    EDIT

I may have misread or misinterpretted the fan thing. I assumed it was a retrofit; is it original Equipment?
