1. I have to agree that running costs, potential failure, quality of sound and all of the other points raised equate to their not being a massive difference and each probably has an equal numbers of supporters (difference being that valve lovers tend to stand on the nearest box and shout louder :) ). However for me the one consideration that can't really be disputed (at the moment) is the weight factor! I realise their are hybrids and pre/powers but invariably valves = weight.

Oh and a +1 for the old trusty GK 800rb. Great amp, shame they missed a trick with the output ratings and load capacity (4/8 ohms)

  2.
Looks a beauty Warwick mate. Who is selling your old 2x10? Is it kalim?
Yes it appears that he likes the tone of the Tech cab but just wants MORE, and I'd say that's what this 6x10 delivers; what the 2x10 has x 3.

The 2x10 can and will handle a gig by itself if anyone is having doubts about it.

  3. Manufacturers state minimum impedances for their amps but I was considering the sonic benefits (if any) at various impedances!

More by luck than judgement my recent cab acquisition is 6 ohm (stick 6 speakers in a box and you can't get 4 or 8 ohm outputs). I thought long and hard about this before committing, my thoughts kind of went along the lines of minimal reduction of amp output (approx 450-500 instead of 550) + good cab sensitivity (104db) + sensible operating load for amp (6ohms) = happy bassist.

Many of us try to get the maximum out of our amp and juggle cab loadings to arrive at, or as close to, the minimum rating for an amp but is there any benefit to running an amp at anything other than its minimum load... or do you achieve the best sound from your amp when it is running at the minimum?

I'm thinking of SS rather than valve amps here as I realise that harmonic distortion etc is sonic heaven for many people.

  4.
Dont you know those speakers should be vertically aligned and the cab 8 foot tall?
If they were squeezed any tighter they would have to be vertically aligned!

I know sonic purists may frown at the cramming of drivers in a minimalist box but the fact that it can handle 2100 watt (rms), have a sensitivity of 104db (1w1m), extend from/to 30-20,000hz and still be skinnier and lighter than most of the 'dinky' cabs out there...

Time will tell if it will deliver the goods live but I ran it for a couple of hours last night and things look good :)

  5. My 30kg (66lb) 6x10 Tech Soundsystems cab has finally arrived (pics and review to follow after a thorough road test).

Has to be the lightest 6x10 ever but the beauty is that it is only 21" wide so can be manoeuvred easily and it has a 'tip & go' set of casters on the rear base of the cab!

  6.
aren't they them who used to be parcelnow?
i've used them a couple of times and yes they do appear to be a parcelforce reseller, but parcelforce do come and pickup the item, take it to a parcelforce depot and deliver to the recipient. All the tracking is done through the parcelforce website and on one occassion when I had booked a collection through parcelnow to send a guitar back to the biggest thick i have ever encountered, the address which i'd sent the parcel to was incorrectly supplied and i was miraculously able to track it and get it redirected all through parcelforce without having to deal with the reseller.
I don't know anything about 'parcelnow' but the payment made to senditnow is the Royal Mail on my bank statement and the guy who collects around our way categorically state they are one and the same not a reseller.

Either way I've had good service from them and they are cheaper than most others considering they collect from the door and will handle cab sized parcels up to 30kg.

  7.
The Bass Centre Deutschlandhave some of the Tech range still in stock, but their prices still aren't that good.
Hang fire... I'll give an update on that when and if I get the cab that I bought from them 10 days ago on a 3/4 day delivery!

  8. I have no affiliation whatsoever but I've been using http://www.senditnow.com/

They charge £11 with £150 insurance or £22 with £500 insurance and they ship anything up to 30kg, door to door in the UK.

It 'IS' actually ParcelForce! Not similar to or like ParcelForce but the one and the same.

Oddly they won't insure the case your bass is couriered in but they do insure what is in the case! Ironically if you send a case without a bass inside it will be covered.

    Worth looking into.

  9. Initially I thought it might have been a Washburn / Status but it looks a bit rough in the finishing dept (mind it could be a rough refin') and they came with the Status Hyper pups IIRC. Might be worth something as the donor for a project (not enough strings for Dood) but if anyone buys it and doesn't want the pups I'll ave them!

  10. I've mentioned this before I'm sure but here is a very recent true story...

My new band were getting used to setting up when the guitarist/singer said that he'd have to be on the drummers right. "Why?" I asked. He replied "I'm deaf in the left ear from playing the clubs". Not that funny really but considering he had just asked what the hell me and the drummer were putting earplugs in for made it 'almost' laughable.

There then ensued a discussion on the merits of earplugs which was shortened when I simply asked him... "So which side of the drummer do you want to set up on when you lose the other ear?".

    Sad but true!

  11. Selling or buying loads of low value items is no sure fire way of building a good rating and gaining a buyers trust. I am more wary of someone who has done that than I am of someone who has joined eBay just to sell one expensive item!

There isn't a guaranteed way of becoming a good eBayer other than to give a full and detailed description, with possibly a range of appropriate pics and invite people to try before they buy or at least give the option to collect. If you are new to eBay and intend buying an expensive item contact a seller and tell them so, possibly giving them a contact number to show you are serious.

    'No reply'... 'No buy'! IMHO

  12. Just my 2p worth.

I wouldn't bid and pay by bank transfer for this item, 'period'.

It doesn't look great looked at as an outsider, especially if his previous sale of a bike went to someone in another country. However the guy could have made a spelling mistake with his destinations and people can be registered in other countries yet living/working in the UK.

All in all not even worth considering unless you get the confirmation that you can collect and pay cash. I would add that I wouldn't go and buy/pay on my lonesome! Take a mate (or two) you just never know.

  13. Why do people always assume valve = big fat sound?

I've owned a Boogie 220 and a 400+ and you could cut glass with the tone from both of them (regardless of which bass I put in the front end). Yet I've had SS amps that have been silky smooth and buttery!

  14.
Just had an email from Bass Merchant too! Mike and the boys have built a cab or two recently, so I think I'm going to have a look at those too!
Keep us all updated.

I spoke to Mike on the phone (pre 6x10 purchase) and he came across as a really nice guy!

  15.
Likewise mate! none of those manufacturers build anything even close to what I am after. So I have a choice of buying blind (and I realise that there are one or 2 makes that I cant go wrong with) OR, what might be fun is to see if I can figure out a design and ask our resident cab builder, JPJ if he fancies a new project! ;o)
Luckily JPJ is no more than 10 mile from me, so he may also be commissioned to do a bass bin for our band!

  16.
It maybe a case of having to buy one and try it out.. then sell if it doesnt do what I want. The major issue with living what seems a thousand miles from.. well.. any other habitation!
I know what you mean. Even though Newcastle is 20 min away the only choice there is Asdown, Peavey or Ampeg!

  17. You seem to be veering toward mixing your driver sizes Dood, 15s seem to be featuring a lot, is this a new direction for you?

Just out of interest since selling the Techs have you bought anything to replace them?
