As for stripping the paint... A gloss finish can get a little grabby with a sweaty paw... Simply knocking the sheen off with a fine wet n dry, light sanding paper, or scotchbright pad can improve matters. I like the feel of unfinished wood, but not practical, and some neck manf won't g'tee unless finished. A wipe of Danish, or other type all as a minimum.

What colour is the body? You could always mask up the edges and go with a matt or satin black on the headstock face.. ya might have enough in a leftover rattle can kicking about...

I think if you remove the hardware, and sand it a bit, it will get rid of the light area... You will prolly need to sand the surface finish off anyway for any stain to take... @TheGreek posted something a while back, wire wool in vinegar... maybe a bit of a faff n stinky! Sample size wood stain from the 'bay?..

I'm on the look out for a cheap Pre/DI missed the deal at Anderton's I'd be happy with a plastic Beringer BDI What do people do with these pedals, and with what footware? If they broke or cracked all the time, they would get updated or discontinued.
