    I wonder what improvement there is over a Mighty Mite neck? I have a MM Jazz neck on a P bass and it is great - I'd say better than a MIM Fender neck, which is the lower cost option from Fender. The USA necks are substantially more.

I'd guess not such good quality as the Hercules, though. Same thing about standing away from the wall.

    You might find a Westone bass within your budget. A Thunder/Thunder 1A/Thunder Jet or Spectrum. All decent, well-made instruments, eminently gig-able basses and better than anything else you'd find for £100 IMO. A Thunder Jet bass went on eBay recently for under £70, for example. I have a Thunder Jet bass with Seymour Duncan pup and a P-retro and it is a monster. The lower end models aren't fashionable and don't fetch anything like their worth secondhand.

    Er, yes, 2 grand is more than I had in mind. Fender Roadworn maybe a good starting point. But I guess it is like everything else - I kept trying P-basses until I found one to settle on. Or two, actually. I like the idea of the Geddy Lee one but even that is a tad heavy. Question - do Aerodyne Jazz basses sound like Jazz basses? I've only ever heard two at gigs and they both had so many effects it could have been anything.

    I have this on my mind so will post it now, despite going on holiday Monday. I sometimes get GAS for a Jazz bass but all those I have tried are too heavy. I just had to move on a beautiful E series MIJ Squier Jazz that sounded and played like a dream but at 10lbs was just too heavy for me. Are there any models that are nearer 8lbs out there? ta!

    TC Classic 450 plus Barefaced Compact/Midget does the job for me set well below halfway. Loud heavy rock band with volume level set by drummer when not going through the pa.

    I used to drive a Citroen Berlingo and the load space in that was immense. Plus a level loading platform - no lip to negotiate so big cabs on castors used to slide straight in. I once took me, guitarist and drummer, complete with all our respective kit, to a gig. I now drive a Skoda Yeti that is superior in every way - apart from load space. More than enough for me + 1 guitarist, though.

    Some pics. I have removed the J retro and put it back to stock with the white scratch plate and chrome bell plate. However, in pushing on the tone knob I seem to have busted the pot so let's change that trade value to £200 tried to highlight the dinks and damage, such as they are. There are some dinks around the bottom end near the strap button and a scratch near the screw for the jack plug end of the bell plate. These were there when I got it. There are some small chips around the edge of the neck pocket that I managed to do when I put a fretless neck on it - apart from that it isn't in bad nick for nearly 30 years old. Included are the black bits in the last pic.     That does look nice. I got one recently and the tone is amazing - sounds more like a P Bass than any other I have picked up. Lightweight and relatively narrow neck, too. Gotta spread da lurve about Silver Series P Basses!

    I wasn't a great fan of the Kursaal Flyers, either. Saw them a couple of times at the Blue Boar pub, which was 'their manor' but it was mainly strutting and posing. Dr Feelgood - the other local band - were the real deal, though. And are still amazing to see live - saw them a month or so back.

    I recently bought an E Series Squier Jazz bass, made in Japan in 1984-7. 62 re-issue model with the earth band to the bridge on the surface. Serial no. E708543. Black, white scratchplate, maple neck with rosewood board, very little fretwear that has cleaned up to be in pretty good nick. It was an unloved thing when I picked it up - filthy dirty and knackered electrics. I stuck a Ki0gon wiring loom and it now sports larger sized CTS pots - John kindly drilled out the original bell plate to accommodate them. It plays magnificently (the neck is awesome) and sounds *exactly* like a jazz bass should. Does the middy burp thing just about as well as I have heard. But. It weighs around 10lbs or so - too heavy for me. I think it is made of MDF or equivalent - some of this age were - so maybe that explains the weight. I would be interested in trading this for a fretless bass, cash either way if necessary. Must be: a/ lightweight - 9lbs or under b/ slim neck 40mm at the nut or less. Beyond that I have some preferences but let's see what pops up, if anything! It is currently sporting a black scratchplate and black plate with black J retro preamp. So fairly black, really. Monster tones! I will put it back to stock unless someone wants it as is, in which case add £100 to the trade value. Pictures to follow.
