Small lighting set up for pub band?
Paul S replied to Gottastopbuyinggear's topic in Accessories and Misc
I bought two of these KAM Party bar thingies https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kam-Lighting-Led-Partybar-V2/dp/B00603XK8K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1495613218&sr=8-1&keywords=kam+party+bar Connected via a DMX cable they run together. I either set them up to give a changing colour wash or change to sound (which can be a bit school disco but lively enough). Cheap and cheerful but perfectly adequate. They will be in the classifieds soon, as it happens, as I am no longer the Keeper of The Lights in my current bands. -

Charity shops usually have loads of old lap top bags for next to nothing. -
What period/style of music inspired you to start playing?
Paul S replied to TheGreek's topic in General Discussion
As I was growing up in the late 60s and early 70s rock music inspired me to learn to play guitar and I played until my early 20s. This was followed by a musical void, playing-wise, until my late 40s when I bought a bass. Although my tastes are a lot more eclectic nowadays I've never really grown out of it and still listen to that genre/era through choice. -
(possibly 8 if Paul S asks me to step in for him).
I would say it is inevitable once (if?) we start getting busy, Warren. A few bridges to cross before then, mind. Seven bands - you must have fingers like old leather pruning gloves!

I considered it only recently. One of my bands decided to start playing Steely Dan's 'Josie' which makes much use of an open E string. Trouble is the singer also decided he couldn't sing it unless it was in D. Capo on the 3rd fret of a 5er would have done it but in the end I just decided to cut short the low D a fraction to give me time to get up the dusty end for those little slidey bits. Although I still miss occasionally It has a greater impact on the guitar parts, though and doesn't quite sound the same.

I bought this a couple of years ago as my 'on stage' back up but am now migrating totally to 5 string basses. It is not a spelling mistake - it is a B2B, a model not seen that much. It is passive and has P/J pickups and a bolt-on neck. I have had several Hohner B2As and this one I find much more to my liking - the tone is a more familiar organic thud from the P pickup than the usual EMGs of the B2A series. Good nick, one or two small dings but only commensurate with use not abuse. As with the rest of these, it takes double ball end strings. Sometimes these little things are surprisingly heavy but this is a lightweight 3.2kg. Nut width is 39mm and string spacing at bridge (no drop D btw) is 18mm. Will come in a padded rifle sack. £250 collected from southeast Essex, £25 for fully insured overnight courier to mainland UK. I bought this new 6 months ago as a back up bass but was blown away by the quality, playability and tone - all of which are way above the price point. Strong B string. I liked it so much I upgraded to an 80s BB5000, which cost me around £1K more. Is it £1K better? No - but it is better so it is the one I am keeping This really is a terrific bass - I don't think you could get a better 5 string for this money. Weighs 4.5kg, neck is slim for a 5er at 43mm at the nut, spacing is 18mm at the bridge. A few surface scratches, nothing to speak of. Full disclosure - I fitted Hipshot Ultralite tuners and so this has an extra screw hole for each at the back of the headstock. You can't see these with then original tuners fitted back. Passive electrics with vol and tone controls, P/J pickups selected by a toggle switch. Tone is huge - deep and organic like a good Precision bass. Both pups give exactly what you would expect from a PJ - burpy and cutting through. Bridge pup is honky but not too nasal. Neck is a joy - rosewood board with mother of toilet seat inlays. Tim bought my Godin acoustibass in the most straightforward of transactions - drove here, tried it out, handed over the cash! A pleasure doing business.

I have 2 hearing aids and haven't found a good way around taking them out, putting in ear plugs, putting them in again. I use IEMs when gigging which gives a totally controllable volume in your ears but then as soon as we finish the first set/stop playing/whatever have to put the hearing aids back in again. All a bit of a nuisance, really.

Thanks for the heads up - I'll do a bit more reading! I'm in no rush - have to shift some gear first, too.

Thanks folks. I did a kind of 'test' at the gym with a 20kg plate and I think that taking my dodgy back into account anything close to that would be too much for me to manoeuver. Probably time to start saving for the Mesa Boogie - which weighs about the same as my current rackmounted Trace Elliot head - or forget it! Appreciate your input - for one thing I was unaware of the Mesa Boogie!
-
Thank you. A lot of amp for not a lot of money. Not as small or light as the Mesa Boogie but it is a grand cheaper!
-
That does help, thank you. Every little bit of info helps as I know nothing!

They are both interesting. I wonder if the Handbox would be loud enough? The Mesa Boogie wins on pretty much all counts except it is very expensive. Hmm.

The Rheingold is interesting and I particularly like the look of the Mesa four:88 but they are both quite expensive. Not sure the Ampeg would be loud enough for what I have in mind. Any other contenders?
