  1. Suppose I could just get one of these, and try and take the "shine" off the neck, and remove that pickguard.... https://shop.fender.com/en-ES/squier-electric-basses/precision-bass/classic-vibe-50s-precision-bass/0374500501.html
  2. Thanks folks. So for example in this, I have the option of choosing a vintage correct neck socket or a reissue neck socket. I would assume I'd still need a neck with a square heel? https://www.guitarbuild.co.uk/products/pb-51 On reflection, it's the 54 countoured body I'd go for. Any suggestions for wood. (Not heavy!). Guitarbuild has quite a few options. Plan would be to keep it a natural finish, as dark as possible once finished. No pickguard, possibly black hardware... Or else finished where the natural grain would show through.
  3. ah right, so I should be looking for something with a square neck, as opposed to rounded...
  4. @hooky_lowdown good to know, so there would possibly be some small gaps if I fitted a j neck.
  5. Hi all, I am thinking of looking at a 51 p bass body, and have seen some for sale online with neck pockets to fit standard fender dimension necks. I have a jazz bass neck lying around which I may use, but do like the tele headstock on the original models. Can you get t style p bass necks with a thin j bass neck profile? Or are the tele style p bass necks all thick? I suppose a normal P bass profile wouldn't be so bad either.
  6. @Bridgehouse good to know, hmmm, I wonder how that pickup would be in a solid body...
  7. @Bridgehouse thanks. I’ve seen a few options in the meantime. A thinline body looks appealing in that it would be light.
  8. Resurrecting an old thread. Thinking of going down the single coil p bass route, and possibly asking the guys at Oil City for a similar pickup to what @Bridgehouse got done in his semi hollow bass. Not sure if the person who built your semi hollow body @Bridgehouse does them usually, or was it a one off?
  9. Fantastic looking machine. Well wear.
  10. Apart from the pickups, any major differences between the Squier CV short scale and the Mustang? Anyone get their hands on the fallout tribute short scale yet? I like the idea of single pickup configs, but if I could stick some Ric Laredo style pickups on a short scale, it would sound great I'd say! Might have been posted already but this? https://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/product/200630359819025--burns-short-scale-jazz-six-bass-red-burst
  11. Ok, talk me out of having GAS and moving on my Gibson SG short scale bass. For whatever reason, I feel I need to move it on!
  12. An easy to play Ric neck profile, and with Laredo/Cheyenne pickup placement and Laredo pickups. (Just get a Laredo then!), Wouldn't have to look like a Ric, I'd like a bolt on neck too. Maybe have one regular Ric scale length, and the other a short scale.
  13. Thanks for the replies. So it's down to aesthetics these days? Well kind of... take away the woods etc, would there be much in a standard j bass neck pickup v an ernie ball stingray neck pickup? Same with the Reverend Mercalli...
  14. Hi all. Looking around online, I am curious about humbucker bass guitars. Double humbucker or single humbucker basses. Why would you choose one over a p or jp or j config? is it more output? Different genres? e.g. a bass with a humbucker in the same position as a p bass will most likely sound very different as will a neck humnbucker v a neck j pickup. I can hear the difference in single coil v humbucker clearly with guitars most of the time. You would think more rock bass would be played on humbuckers but the p or j config seems to be quite popular still in that genre. Are they muddy sounding usually?
  15. Are the G&L J basses smaller bodies?
  16. I think this is a medium scale, so maybe not worthy of this thread. Picked it up this week. Sold my Talman short scale and a Dano guitar so this cost me nothing really. €25 was the difference. 90s Samick. Very good condition. I might get rid of the pickguard. Feels on the light side. Strung with roundwounds, so there´s a bit of buzzing going on. Might look at flatwounds. I'll see. What about the bridge? Should it go and be replaced? I don't have an amp here to test it, so will have to wait
  17. After some research I think I'll hold out and see if Epi release the Rivoli again. The Samick Meriken Rivoli copy seems to be 34" according to a Samick forum I came across. I emailed the store and they said it was 32" point something (can't recall).
  18. I had the squier MD bass a few years back and like a fool I sold it. I think there was a Mexican version knocking around too, as well as a higher end sig? Love the tele headstock on them, but this one here looks cool too.
  19. @Maude I hear you. Funnily enough I find that semi hollow guitars sound very similar to solid bodies. The JC might be the one, but sorely tempted with that Samick, which I believe is semi hollow as well... I have a Rockinbetter Ric faker and a Gibson short scale SG (which I may or may not hold onto), and a Vintage brand P bass which I will probably sell down the line, so as long as the new one sounds different to those, I'd be happy to justify it! I'd love to gig any bass, whenever we can do so again!
  20. Right, I´ve narrowed it down to the following: This Samick *maybe* : https://guitarshop.es/producto/samick-bass-sab-tb-90s/ An Epiphone Jack Casady Maybe, but might rule it out, as it doesn't shout "wow, cool!" to me is the Ibanez abg200. One potential issue I have with Jack Casady is based on the video demos, it can sound like a conventional solid body, to my ears anyway, but I like the simplicity of 1 pickup and they three gain options switch. Flatwounds might set it off too. The Samick would tip a hat to the Rivoli, and I'd be taking a chance ordering online. With the neck pickup, it would at least sound very different. I'd be adding fuzz, wah, reverb, delays, or at the very least experimenting with them with whatever I get. The Ibanez? No other reason than they are reliable and it's a medium scale...
  21. Jackson/Charvel need to reissue the surfaster! I had an Eastwood Stormbird guitar but didn't hold on to it. It looked cool, but felt a bit toy like, maybe it was the finish? Well, just wasn't for me, but they do have some cool looking guitars and basses.
  22. @Grahambythesea I’m in Spain currently and am tempted by one of the Merikens. I notice both models have slightly different pickups and while the specs on the website state they are 34” I was under the impression these copies were medium scale. They have two Epi Rivolis listed as sold which also seem to be 34” according to the website specs. I had a full scale Ibanez semi hollow years ago and it was ok, just remember feeling it a big thing to get around! A short or medium scale would be very comfortable. The Jack Cassidy also seems tempting but back to my original post, so does the Hofner club ! Decisions decisions...
  23. I’d be using an amp with whatever I get. Anyone ever play the Samick Rivoli copies?
