  1. Update. Northwest guitars specs for J bodies are 60s. Probably wouldn't make a huge difference to my ears but will have a look around over next few months and see what pops up for 70s specs.
  2. One of the reasons I'm going to leave body and pickups as the last things to get! I think I'd go for 70s, as the pickup further back might suit more overdriven styles better? (work back from that then with pickups...)
  3. Good question. Not thought of that and had a look at the stock bodies on northwest guitars but not yet sure what spacing they are? I’d go passive pickups too. Should have mentioned that.
  4. Hi all, I'm in the process of gathering bits and bobs over next few months for a J bass build. Where to even start with pickups. I suppose I'll work back from the type of music I'd like to play. Hopefully if things get back to some kind of normality, I can get into a covers band again and this time around, I'm hoping to keep it a bit more alternative, heavy. Safe to say there won't be much pop or country. I had been thinking of Seymour Duncan quarter pounders, but have read good things about Kent Armstrong pickups as well. I don't *have* to go for a particular brand I suppose, but seems to be a lot of choice out there. Di Marzio would be next on my radar I suppose. Build will be a maple neck, and I haven't yet decided on a body. Any advice?

  6. I had a rosewood j bass neck from nthwest too and sold it for a shelved project (was decent quality too, I think I might have bought the last one before they went out of stock!) but just ordered a vintage gloss maple j neck for a project on the long finger.
  7. I would imagine the CV basses would be the next step up in terms of mods?
  8. @Paul S I saw that vid before. They sound similar, but probably feel totally different, plus the EB3 is a long scale. I'm just keen on that neck pickup sound...
  9. Has anyone compared the Epiphone EB0 with the Gibson SG Bass? Besides the extra pickup on the Gibson... I have the Gibson but thinking of “downgrading” to the Epi and putting the funds into a j bass ! A foolish move?
  10. Just had a look at that g&l ad. Are those necks as thick as they say?
  11. Or something with P bass pickups in the P bass position? Possibly passive. Ballpark..
  12. Wasn't aware of this model hb. Funnily enough I have a Gibson SG Faded bass which I picked up for €450/£400, and it'll never be a "no 1" bass, so I was half thinking of selling it, getting an Epi EB0 and upgrading a few bits and have it as an extra bass. I suppose if I take into account what I'd spend on the extras and the Epi EB0, I may not be far off 400 quid!
  13. Any recommendations for upgrades to an Epiphone EB0? Dimarzio pickup? New bridge? What about a brass or aluminium nut? Upgrade wiring?
  14. Had my eye on the jb2 for a while. How do they fare out? Seem to be priced around Squier CV territory. I like the body on the jb2, seems to be more of a p bass body and is light apparently.
  15. Stunning looking bass in the vid, just me or do these sound "treble heavy"...?
  16. I think the only ones I’ve seen are Dano, Jerry Jones and old Silvertone vids on YT. Sound seems very clear and crisp. The Dano 59 demos I’ve seen sound pretty good but you’d be hit or miss with rest of guitar, especially the tuners from what I can gather. Other brands seem to have stayed away from lipsticks for good reason maybe? Too weak ?
  17. On reflection, it's the 54 body I'd go for, so the same as the current CV.
  18. tempting! I really need to sell some things first, so should park this idea until I do :)
  19. I could probably live without a j neck profile, but wouldn't want a baseball bat thick one either. Bar getting a custom neck made....
