For me personally as a five string player,other versions of what Fender invented can offer better B strings,more comfortable fingerboard radii,better colour options,build quality,more frets etc etc. I have nothing against the brand but found that they're not necessarily the "best" at what they started. It hasn't stopped me having one in the stable still however albeit with a Sadowsky onboard preamp modification. To date my favourite take on a jazz bass is an actual Sadowsky.

I don't know for sure but apart from the S-1 switch weirdly now operating the active/passive option instead of the more usual series/parallel feature I doubt it's broken any new sonic barriers. I tried one (Jazz Ultra ii V) and it seemed like business as usual but at a higher price. Nothing wrong with it but nothing in my mind to justify the price hike.Can't understand going from a toggle switch to S-1 on active/passive but hey.

I'm not sure if any of their preamps are available to buy separately? What is it about it in particular why you'd want one?

I clocked it too.It sold within hours of being listed. That's how you price something to sell in my opinion,no messing about. I miss that about the secondhand market. I've seen used basses online sitting about for months without any interest but some of the sellers won't seem to budge on price as a result. It's like a stand-off in a western movie.

I always had really pleasant exchanges with Roy Chudobskyi there. He was great at knocking a few quid off list prices for me especially on used items. Was he on director level? I'll miss dealing with him.

You'll need to try a new or used Warwick Rockbass Corvette $$ 5 based on your post and see if it's your thing. If it is then the fact that it's Chinese made will be irrelevant.

I think the Stingray 5 is so awesome I've tried about 5 or 6 times to keep one. I had to admit defeat in the end as the 17.5mm string spacing just isn't the one for me. If they came out with a 19mm spacing fiver I would rethink. I really like the vibe and the sound as well as the stellar build quality but cramped finger spacing on any bass turns me away.

What are the other string spacing offerings for the fivers?

Would you say that applies to every instrument then and not just bass? Or even any process that relies on muscle memory?

Absolutely beautiful. I always thought the 534 meant 4 string so it shows what I know. So what separates this from a 535 (what I thought all 5 strings were?)

Not being a listener or player of anything metal related I've noticed this "good for metal" phrase being used a lot and I'm assuming its all tongue-in-cheek,Talkbass is where I first heard it. How did it all originate or is it just playful banter? Just curious ☺️

My last few trips to some very well known guitar stores recently have been a bit off putting. Not only do (some of) the staff have a "couldn't care less attitude" but the so-called background music has been approaching stadium level volume. I've literally had to request either some headphones or a reduction in volume so I could demo a bass. Not saying I won't try again going forward however but it's happening more and more these days in my experience.

Out live in a mix is the real test I think. I once had a ceramic pickup era Stingray 5 that sounded weird (to me) on its own but when I took it out it was like a different machine completely (for the better). The principle can work in reverse also.

Do you mean this when the Sandberg was played at home as opposed to out in a live mix? I found them a bit sterile sounding on their own but in a live mix was a different story.
