How long have you been playing bass? Again I'm just curious as there's no right or wrong answer. I've seen a few raised eyebrows whenever it's mentioned I've never used one

I'll tag along along for the ride in the hope I might learn something. I've also never used compression. Why do you feel you need one of curiosity?

In my experience it's a bass issue rather than a string choice one. I exclusively use a 120 B string with no issues whatsoever.

Hate to say but I've done this and noticed no real difference if any.

Does it have to be a Fender? Their 5 strings are generally nothing great and don't offer the full 19mm bridge string spacing you're after. I happen to own a variation that offers that spacing however,the Player Plus Jazz V. I would think about Laklands as suggested by @chris_b but you're after a Jazz so that would mean a Darryl Jones 5 or a 55-60. Fenders are hit and miss so try before buying is the best option if you're able to. This is all in my experience.

As an ex-owner of the fretted 5 string version I second this. I only moved it on when my tonal goals changed.

Yep this is all true. I actually have a Mexican Player Plus Jazz V bought used from The Gallery earlier this year modified with an onboard Sadowsky preamp. I'm not a Fender fanboy but I really like this particular one.

That applies to Fender rather than Squier in my experience. I've had several of each. It's to the point where I don't understand the immense price difference between the two brands.

Started out on passive 4s and exclusively now play active 5s. Won't even look at 4s now.

I have an NT AND a BO Warwick 5 and neither B string is better or worse than the other one. So I would say any German Warwick 5 based on that as I've owned a few in the past for comparison.

I tried this when I last popped in there. Lovely bass but wasn't for me personally. Somebody else will love it.
