The Bass Show UK - Cranmore Park, Birmingham - March 1st and 2nd

Got ma ticket for the Saturday 😁 -
I agree with the ‘not fit for purpose’ comments but a quick ‘fix’ might be a cheap phone from CeX (or similar) which you could then not update? I used to play in a band with one them there Behringer Air Mixers which I loved but I couldn’t get out of my head “what happens when either the mixer or the app keeps getting updates”? I have enough problems with Candy Crush 😂.

Thanks Peeps!

Are people happy to please share ‘which’ ACS’s they have? I’ve looked at all 7 options and none mention ‘playing bass’. ta!
-
Current eventbrite link has it happening in Trafalgar Square 😂. Either a hoax or an idea they haven’t fleshed out yet?
-
I play in the house band at an open mic and for a long I only took my fretless. One time this guy came over at the end and very earnestly asked "why do you play fretless" and at the time the only reply I could think of came out "because I can!". He duly walked off leaving me thinking "pretentious? Moi?"🤣

If it’s in warranty I’d probably leave it as you could invalidate that. I had my helix open a couple of times when it was like 3 years old and as far as I recall the feet were not completely necessary. I think I’d find something thick enough to make up the gap.
-
Fine if you want Gilmore tones. Or Guy’s? Easy enough to change though. And plenty of help here if you need it.
-
I’m sure by default it shows the preset number above the name? If not possibly one of the Global footswitch settIngs has been changed? It’s explained in the Helix manual. Page 12 in the 3.80 version.

3.80 firmware update now available. Not much for bass specifically but I’ve had some fun using ‘amps that weren’t designed for bass’.

3 SM58s for singing. Acoustic/electric using helix to FOH, monitoring with Behringer mic stand speaker. Electric using an amp (keep hoping he’ll use some sort of modelling) with DI to FOH (mostly used for a bit of throw & recording) monitored with the little Bose wedge thingy (technical term). I use a Stomp to FOH (and an amp for bigger gigs) with IEMs. Drummer has one of those Yamaha gizmos that sits over the bass drum for throw and recording (if needed), monitoring through IEMs. Sometimes you get enough ’room’ through the drummers Yamaha mic but he doesn’t always use it. It’s the sterility of not feeling ‘part’ of the room vs being able to hear everything. The vocal mics pick up most stuff but if the (main) singer turns round I can hear him less than if he’s talking ‘at’ the audience so am hoping some sort of ambient mic placement will help. I guess it will be trial & error but any pointers of where to try (at least 1st) gratefully received.

Hola! Qestion about abmient mic placement please. The drummer and I have been using IEM's in our 4 piece pub band for a while but we are finding the experience a bit 'sterile'. Its also a pain to hear the singer counting in if he isn't talking into his mic! I have an Aston Element that I was using for recording so am going to have a go at putting that up at the next gig. Just not sure where! If I put it near the drum kit I guess I'll just get 'more drums' so was going to put it on a clip on one of the FOH speaker stands (so its behind and won't pick up that/feedback). Or will that be 'too far away'? For context a lot of the places we've been playing I'm using a headless bass so I'm not constantly braining the singer! Not particularly bothered about picking up the band or using it for recording (using a Zoom L12 desk with everthing goin in there), its more so that the Drummer and I don't think we are in a separate room! Thoughts?

Welcome! Bit to ‘inner London’ for this suburbanite but nice to read the chat about. My locality. The Vigier is lovely!
-
Any thoughts on a 2024 event yet? I too would be interested.
-
I didn’t remember seeing any. Maybe I came in in the middle of a conversation.
-
I have a 79p that adjusts at the heel
-
I only use the Stomp. I have different patches designed for different songs/styles and basses. I use two paths, a TRS from the main out to the desk for my ‘sound’, then the other out the send to an amp (if I’m using one) as a monitor- and for ‘look’ as even some band mates are weirded out if you don’t have an amp on stage. I don’t feel/see the need for anything else.
-
The Stomp has the Regal Di (Noble) which I gather is most bassists holy grail. You can also run IRs to emulate a DI sound you like. It’s more whether you can / want to put the time into a Stomp to get the sound you want. I can pretty much guarantee it’s in there. Just might not be that easy to get it out!

Wow, looking at the dates bandied around my Kestrel could have been a ‘prototype’ for the model produced under that name? I know it was one of the 1st 100 instruments he made (dated 1981). Sports the single Kent Armstrong & still sounds amazing! Has this ‘oink’ I’ve not heard on another bass. With the through neck I can’t get the action as low as I’d like but I’m not usually up the dusty end!
-
I was thinking that but as the ad didn’t say…
-
So how come this ‘56 P is ‘only’ £7k? https://jayrosen.com/collections/fender-basses/products/1956-fender-precision-bass

I know what you mean. I think it’s back to old fashioned haggling there though. I was looking at mixers (trying to get something with 4 busses so we can all have our own monitor feed) and he came down from £450 to £377 as soon as I showed him what it was on the internet, plus offered to throw in a soft case.

Oxford Street end of Wardour St. Very nice people - Gabriel & Ritchie even let this old man use their staff toilet! They had quite a lot of Ampeg gear but not sure if they had what you want. Give em a call 02074324400. Gibson Garage is just the other side of Oxford Street & in the middle is Tongue & Brisket who do the most amazing Salt Beef Sandwiches! Day out….

Just been in Yamaha London. They said “mid April & RRP £208” but did imply that actual cost would be lower.
-
A new toy or something that could be used - even if it’s that odd battery powered gig? https://line6.com/podexpress/bass-effects looks more interesting that the “one” thing they recently released.
