  1. I wonder if the sound was partly down to the bass I was using - it had flats on and with the best will in the world these don't flatter an amp. When I have the moolah ready to make a purchase I'll find somewhere that lets me do a proper A/B test on as many different amps as possible. As I am genuinely looking for something I don't feel guilty about trying out gear - or saying no if it doesn't suit. The Ashdown and Rumble are both much lighter than the Crush, plus although I love my Crush 25 as a practice amp, I think the distortion on the bigger models is horrible and fizzy.
  2. Tried out the Ashdown Studio 12 today. Sound was pretty meh until I put the preshape on. Then ok but not as 'solid' sounding as the Rumble and not very loud either IMHO. wIth a an American Player fretless Jazz .
  3. Lifting is more about technique than strength, if you know how to lift safely, you are at relatively low risk.
  4. I've been sent a list of ten songs. I haven't even met the singer yet,one practice then two gigs a week later. Most are pretty straightforward, but the list includes Wherever I Lay My Hat so now I'm trying to learn more than just the twiddly bit at the beginning...
  5. It becomes classic rock when its what your parents listened too. Bear in mind In The Mood is closer in time to me as a teenager than Stormzy.

The sweetest thing to do would be to play the gig, but just push the timing out whenever and wherever you can so the drummer (who sounds like he plays to himself and assumes you will follow) ends up sounding looser than an elephant on sennakot. And for each song that ends on a big thump, play your 'twaaaang' half a beat early so it looks like he's lost...
  7. I got ejected for being to widdly and the rhythm guitarist took over on bass. At least that's what they said. I have to be honest I wanted to play semi-improvisational space rock and they wanted to play straight indy/garage type stuff. They did give me a writing credit on the next demo tape before they disappeared intop obscurity (not that we were ever very non-obscure).

  9. I found a tea chest floating in the bristol channel. It appears to hve been packed with plaster llamas, most of which have disintegrated. Can anyone suggest a way to safely dispose of the fifty kilos of white powder?

  11. It's the percussion, especially the use of the dreaded sampled handclaps... I think Peggy panicked a bit at the thought of not having a drummer! The sleeve of my cassette copy is signed by the man himself (he did seem a bit astonished, I seem to recall he said he'd never been asked to sign a copy before...)

  16. Hmm.. after looking at some 'real world' reports on the Rumble 40 it's probably that or the Ashdown Studio 10. Practically I think I have to wait a month or so anyway, so I'll just bumble my way through this first gig and see what happens (it may be a complete disaster...) Looks like we will rehearse properly next week, so I'll find out what gear we will use .
  17. 'Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow' - but on mandolin, no fancy picking, just chords. Some quite fast changes in one bit. I seem to have most trouble with remembering the words...
  18. Back to the subject of this thread, I've had the delight of learning the (incredibly not-difficult) One Love. Can't say I've got a perfect Family Man sound but I just used the neck pickup on a Jazz with the tone right down and even with roundwounds it sounds nice .
  19. Problem is the Laney head is in many ways a TE clone, including the weight... I could get a combo up to 100W for the price of the RM210 that's probably lighter than the head... I should be clear I'm looking at no drum gig here, plus it's a 'side project' so I don't want to invest a huge amount. Think it will be February before I can invest, anyway... Ironically I used to have a Marshall JCM800 1x12 cab with a greenback in it, a bit short of deep bass but it worked well, that I gave to my brother. I thought of (perhaps temporarily)_ rehousing one of my 12" speakers - I have two greenbacks and a pair of Mackenzies but they are all 16 ohm. A bad thought for a temporary solution, I've got a Carlsboro Colt guitar amp, I could blank off the back and use the clean channel. I suspect that would be enough to get me through the first gig.
  20. There seem to be a lot of ways to get light and portable, but I thing I am really looking at a combo. Does anyone know if there are comparable figures for loudness anywhere? e.g if I lined up Rumble 40, Crush 50 and Ashdown Studio 10 (50W) which would be the loudest - I know actual wattages are far from the whole story... Lots of sales patter about 'acoustic gigs' etc. but these don't really tell me much. I might just go with the laney and a 2x12 with the volume down for the first gig and see how loud the rest of them are.
  21. I've come across two or three LP's (copies and most recently an Epi) that clearly had chambered bodies... filled with depleted uranium pellets.
