Songs You Really Don't Like Playing?
PaulWarning replied to yorks5stringer's topic in General Discussion
looking at some of the songs mentioned here, some of you guys must be in pretty strange covers bands. I don't think I could ever play in a function band, I'd have to play songs I wouldn't normally listen too, which is a good yardstick to use I reckon, we once played a wedding gig where we were asked to play stand by me, but at least it has a great bassline -
Compressors with bass, is it really that necessary?
PaulWarning replied to RustInPeace90's topic in Effects
I prefer using a little bit of distortion which acts as a compressor -
I've recently realised that the number of songs I hate and hate to play, massively outnumber the songs I like and am allowed to play. So now I just don't bother
guess you're in the wrong covers band then -

We tried Alice for a while, didn't have the audience reaction we'd expected so dropped it, Nellie the Elephant still in there, which always goes down a storm, but as someone else said, if the audience like it, it's good enough for me -
Fender Rumble 500 V3 - Got One? What's It Like?
PaulWarning replied to Norris's topic in Amps and Cabs
cheers Norris, that's great, just what I suspected bass is very low at 80Hz, thats bass drum territory, low mid is more like bass boost/cut -
I'll have a look at my manual tomorrow and let you know. I've got to dash out straight after work in my "weekend warrior" guise
ok cheers, I've been on the Fender site and the Rumble V3 series is not listed yet, as far as I can see -
Fender Rumble 500 V3 - Got One? What's It Like?
PaulWarning replied to Norris's topic in Amps and Cabs
anybody know where I download a user manual? I'd like to know what frequencies the tone controls effect, the bass control seems very deep, turn that full up makes my speakers rattle and distort. I should add I've done a google search and got nowhere -

Fender Rumble 500 V3 - Got One? What's It Like?
PaulWarning replied to Norris's topic in Amps and Cabs
I used my rumble at a gig for the first time at the weekend, after a bit of fiddling with the tone controls it sounded good, one thing confused me though, I've been using Marshall MB4210 before with a Carlsbro Bass Beasty used as a 1 x 15 extension cab ( the amp section doesn't work anymore) to good effect, it increased volume and bottom end, but with the Rumble it had hardly any effect at all, maybe a touch more bottom end but no perceivable increase in volume, any ideas why this should be? I was thinking of getting a matching 2 x10 rumble cab for it, but now I'm not so sure. I did change the 15 inch speaker in the Beasty for an 8ohm one I had btw -
I use something like these, cut them to shape and cover with lacquer to stop catching them with your thumb http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Luminescent-Glow-in-the-Dark-Vinyl-Light-Switch-Stickers-16-Pack-/131304609549?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item1e925d570d

Cover versions - do you ask permission?
PaulWarning replied to redstriper's topic in General Discussion
I thought youtube had some sort of system that allowed copyright holders to to object with a blue mark (I think) a copyright violation, 3 'blue marks' and your account is suspended -
Its staggering to see just how many supposedly professional or semi-professional musicians have an utterly lax attitude to PLI and basic safety checks like PAT. Be thankful that driving instructors and restaurateurs take themselves more seriously as professionals. Want to be treated like a pro? Then behave like one, get your insurance sorted out and your gear checked.
because they are basic checks anybody with a bit of basic electrical knowledge and common sense can do them
Possibly so they can sell you the most exotic nut material, to match that exotic 'tonewood'. You could always drop the tuning, capo on the first fret and you have a 32" scale zero fret.
it's something I've considered on my acoustic guitar where I never play anything above the 5th fret, mainly because of intonation problems

just listened to this weeks later, am I going deafer than ever or were the vocals really recessed, particularly Noel Gallaghers, at least Jools didn't get to join in on his piano edit, last weeks later
Doesn't make the slightest difference what it's made of as long as it's fitted & cut properly. Logically a zero-fret in front of the nut is a far more sensible idea - but that just ain't fashionable. Jon.
I've got an old Wilson guitar with the 'zero fret' and I've always thought "what a good idea" no more fannying around cutting the nut to exactley the right depth, I've often wondered why it's not more widely used.
I buy and sell a lot on eBay. Buy on auctions, sell on buy it now. Do your research, check sold items to get a realistic market value and set your buy it now accordingly. Don't go near an auction if you are selling is my advice. People will pay a little more on a buy it now as it gives them time to convince themselves they want to pay that amount and they don't have the unpredictability of whether they will win an auction. Just keep the price realistic.
now I've thought about 'buy it now' does make a lot of sense with the make me an offer bit included, I've just put a combo on there at a highish price but not silly and already had an offer, a bit on the low side but not insulting
Axl Rose?
I just can't listen to Guns and Roses because of his voice

any extended solo's are crap, guitar solo's aren't really solo's at al because (usually) the bass and drummer keep playing, a short little fill by the bassist/drummer/guitarist is great to add interest to the song but that's it, bloody hate drum solo's, I've been known to walk out of gigs because of them. The only solo I play is in Hate to say I told you so by the Hives and I just play the same riff as I do throughout the song
-
could never get into the Smiths because of Morrissey's whining out of tune vocal, strangely I quite like some of his solo stuff he seems (to me anyway) to be singing more in tune

for years I've been humping round a Carlsboro Bass Beasty which I use as an extension cab for my perceived unreliable Marshall MB 4210 (which is also a lump at 33Kg) , so if needed I could use it as a back up amp, never ever needed it, I've recently decided to go down the light weight route and I've got a Fender Rumble, which means I won't have a back up, we all know what's going to happen, sods law being what it is, My get out of jail plan is to plug into the vocal PA, not ideal but better than nothing

all opera singers sound bloody awful to me, just don't get it
I've stopped trying to sell anything on Ebay totally. If I remember rightly, if you add a Buy it now, your auction starting price has to be 40% lower than the Buy it now? To me that means you either have to start the auction 'high' (Buy it now 'high') or put the Buy it now at a 'too' tempting price or that high there will be no chance of selling it. By the time you have paid ebay, their postage cut and paypal fees it's not worth selling anything on there. I sort of worked out that by the time I had paid all those it knocked 20% off the final selling price. That's a big fee... Also, why would a buyer pay their fees when BC has a marketplace that is far cheaper and with far less scammers!
trouble with the BC marketplace is there's a £7 fee whether you sell or not (as I understand it) and there's a far lower market place for your item, on ebay you only pay if you sell and I claw a bit of the fees back by inflating the postage.
I generally put anything up at 99p and simply let it run it's course. The low start gets folk interested in watching it and most things find their true value. Certainly there's enough folk watching the basses that no bass ever gets sold at a real bargain price, unless someone is at Lands End with "Collection only". What bugs me is the reserve price. In a real "stand in the room and raise you hand" type auction, the punters don't know there is a reserve price. On Ebay it's like there's an "elephant in the room". We all know the reserve price hasn't been met. You can watch it for 7 days. It gets to the end, only to find the item NEVER gets to sell, because the [s]plonker selling[/s] seller has some inflated idea of the item's value. I even feel tempted to put my Harley Benton up there for sale, start at 99p, with a reserve of £2k and see it relist week after week, after week, after week....
I agree with reserve price, what's the point? just start the auction at your lowest price if you don't want to risk letting it go too cheaply
