1.
These days I only ever hire beginner bass players. Why? They know they're not sh*t-hot so they don't try to show off all the time, they don't have any funny ideas about bass being a lead instrument, and they don't think that they're in a position to rewrite all your stuff to make it more "interesting" for them to play.
For some reason this is uncomfortable reading. You say you are a singer/songwriter and if you mean hire bass guitarists as a backing band for yourself, rather than a band per se then I can see your point. However it is sad to think that you believe that any (or most) bass players that are not beginners suddenly lose the ability to play to the music and want to fret-w**k everywhere. It is experience that has taught me how to play for the music, rather than for myself. A beginner bass player you say will just do his job, but wouldn't you like someone who can not only do that job (with more ease), but to be able to contribute to your ideas and possibly make them better. A proper experienced bass player will not have ideas about being a lead instrument or want to rewrite every aspect of your music, or at least I wouldn't. At the end of the day, I imagine bad experiences has lead to your actions, and if its working, then good on you and hope you every success. But as a bass player who plays in a band with fairly simple but effective basslines, and who appreciates the song as a whole, it is rather sad that you have to look at beginners who will have no input whatsoever.
2. Having recently purchased a second hand one of these recently from here, I can certainly vouch for the lighter and faster aspect of this bass - at my first band rehearsal with one of these I was amazed at how easy and comfortable it was to play on. I used to play a Squier VM Jazz, and although it is an extremely good bass for its price, I was gobsmacked on how the Sterling not only had a better quality tone (well it is active), but the neck is just sublime to play on in comparison to the Jazz, and when I went back to playing on the Jazz, it felt cumbersome and uncomfortable.
3. Since I've recently bought a Musicman Sterling off here, and with impending car tax and insurance to pay, it's time to give my black Yamaha BB414 to a new home. I bought this here over three years ago from Apothem - see thread http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...amp;#entry54579, and for the first year I played on this quite a lot for home practise and for the odd gig, so it has gained the odd scratch and dings on the body, but is still in very good condition. I also had this serviced about 4-5 months ago to use for recording (if you want to listen, click on my band myspace and play 'Separate Ways'), and ever since it has been sat in its case. I should warn you now that the action on this is rather high (for my own crazy preference), and that the key for the case (mentioned in the original sale) I've never actually seen so I can't offer you that in the sale. I will instead throw in a crappy strap and a handheld stagg tuner. (Apologies for the not so great quality photos, but I'm not very good with digital cameras) I want to sell for [s]£140[/s] £130, and have based this by looking at previous sales, and also considered the hardcase and the fact it has been upgraded with a Gotoh Bridge (I still have the original as well) I'd rather not post this, but could be willing to deliver this via car to anyone living not too far away from Widnes, Northwest, for a small petrol-related fee. Any questions feel free to PM me - I check my computer quite a lot so should be able to get back to you quickly. Cheers.
4. I can't believe that three pages in and no one has mentioned the most overplayed (and probably banned in shops) bass lick of all time. The bass line that is the outro to Fleetwood Mac - The Chain that is. If some of you don't recognise the song title (possibly the younger members), please refer to Youtube, go about 3 minutes into the song and then you'll know what I'm on about.
5.
Guys Bought an RC4 and TC 2X10 cover from AJ Pleasure to do business and now please somebody buy his MM it is an absolute bargain John
I have done and received it today! Just wanted to say that dealing with AJ was an absolute pleasure and communication was superb, precise and very prompt! He packaged the bass extremely well and went out of his way to make sure I recieved the bass as quickly as possible - much better service than a shop! Cheers
6. I'm currently looking to upgrade to a better bass and just want to aks a quick question. How does the sound and neck compare to a standard US Fender Jazz? Please excuse my ignorance, but I've never tried a Sterling (or any Musicman) before. At a price like this I really want to go for it - even doing a round trip from the Northwest!
7.
Really? I've had nothing but glowing praise for the excellent quality of the DI whenever I've used my old ABM C110 combo to record or play live.
When I say most I really only mean a couple (not giiged my amp that much!). I asked an engineer at the Masque (former Barfly) in Liverpool why he didn't use the DI output and pointed at the Ashdown sign and said "because of that" Apparently he has had bad experiences in the past (maybe its just him?)
8. Basically, I have a gig on Friday and was wondering if anyone could help me out with a query. Usually at gigs we do, I run a bass guitar, into my pedal board with assorted stompboxes (tuner>compression>fuzz>dist>chorus), then into a DI box (provided by the sound engineer) that is connected to the input of the amp (my amp is an Ashdown and most engineers I've found do not like the DI output on ashdowns). I do not use the effects loop on my amp. Tonight at practise I was offered a rack unit compressor/noisegate (the latter I could do with) by the rehearsal rooms' owner. When trying it, I connected that via the effects loop, so had bass into my effects board (minus my stompbox compressor) into amp, then the compressor/noisegate into effects loop. It sounded fine and it seemed to do the job well. My concern is though (due to severe lack of knowledge) that at a gig, if the bass is DI'ed via a DI box connected to the input of my amp, am I correct in saying that the amp EQ and any effects connected in the effects loop will not be fed through the PA, as it is after that connection (my wording is terrible, sorry) and so only will affect the signal from my amp? I presume that the engineer will have a compressor anyway for all channels at his desk but am just wondering whether there is any point of buying/using this unit for gig situations. (I could ask the engineer to Mic the bass amp but would they be willing to do so?) Sorry for the long muddled post. If any of you can make sense of it and help me with this I would greatly appreciate it. Cheers
9. A lovely town called Widnes, near Liverpool. I've sent you a PM anyway.
Whereabouts in the NW Bidd?
10. Would you be prepared to post this to the Northwest, and if so how much extra?
11. Can someone else confirm that this is a good price? I'm VERY tempted but £875 is a lot of money to me.
12. Did you receive my PM? Anyway I wouldn't blame you if you decided not to sell. I nearly bought one new myself a couple of years ago but decided on a cheaper bass so I could fork out on effects.
13. Would you be prepared to post this out? (to within England that is)
14. Hi Macmellus, I know a band looking for a bassist. I can't remember what they are called though. Or where they are based. Or what type of music they play. Or how old they are all are. Or how to contact them. They are holding auditions somewhere, sometime next week. Good luck!
15. Actually I've been thinking about this a lot recently during rehearsal. I've been trying to do our songs without looking (they are pretty simple basslines though) but have then got a problem as to were to look during a gig.
16. Very pleasant to deal with. Great communication, instant payment, and very understanding and co-operative when I organised when and how to have the pedal sent to him. A credit to Basschat
17. Is the band called Rekoner by any chance?
Has this gone?
It has been sold pending payment. If it falls through however I'll let you know

Bump. I'm thinking now that setting a price may be a bad idea due to the condition of the pedal. Therefore I'm willing to listen to any offers (with around £5 for postage)

Not had a chance to try it out yet as I don't have an amp at home (both are in different practice rooms!). I have practice tonight though so I'm going to give it a run.

Since buying Kev's Big Muff, my Russian one has to go. I bought this off ebay about a year ago, and when I bought the previous owner had for some reason (I can't remember why or how) had managed to switch all the three functions around i.e. the volume knob actually changes sustain, the tone knob changes volume and the sustain knob changes tone. There are labels printed on though so to avoid confusion. This doesn't affect the overall sound. Another slight issue (which happened under my ownership) was that the black lead from the battery connector had snapped off (at the clip end, not the circuit board end), so I've had to reattach it via some soldering. It does work but it might be worth getting someone who's good at electronics to replace the battery clip to be on the safe side though. I'm also throwing in a connector that attaches to the battery clip and can be plugged into a power brick. I will also send it in the box of the Muff that I've just received (US version). Cheers for looking.
22. and replied. Just to let everyone know this has been provisionally been sold pending payment
