1. Stephen bought my lovely black 80s MIJ Squier P, very pleasant & easy transaction! Hope he enjoys the bass as much as I miss it! It's been business doing pleasure with you! Or something like that... Jon.
2. I had one of these in 1981, when I joined my first proper band. As I remember it was this one: http://www.ampaholics.org.uk/basmaster%20FNT.jpg Only with ordinary black Tolex-y covering. I also had a matching 2x12 cab, I think I paid about £30 for both from a charity shop! It seemed pretty loud to me at the time but I probably didn't know much better... I can't exactly remember what happened to it - I have an idea that the basement where we practised got flooded & it was ruined, along with a bass bin I made with my Dad. Wish I still had that. Jon.
3.
Yummie bass mate .. Don't actually use Parcelforce to ship it though
+100. If you read the small print, ParcelFarce insurance only covers musical instruments up to £150 maximum. They don't tell you this at the PO and are happy to take money off you for "enhanced insurance" that has absolutely no value. Lovely bass by the way - I'm guessing it's actually right-handed, not a lefty. Jon.
4.
I should add that I did offer Bassassassin first refusal before selling it elsewhere.
Stop reminding me! It's terrible - I couldn't afford that, I can't afford Chris' one, I can't afford your 2366B fretless and I'm too skint to even make an offer on that nice Antoria Jazz that came up last week! Curse having to buy a new car & not having sold all the basses I don't want any more! J.
5. Have you seen this? http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=63842 Not a Cirrus BXP, but these are great, I have the 5er & it's a stunner for the money. Jon.
6.
Bassassin will probably be along in a minute to shine light on the matter. While you're waiting, here's the Rickenfaker thread to pass the time. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=270
Hi! Mr P. Redictable here... What the very knowledgeable Mr Foxen says, and the OP's own observations about the bass he owns, covers pretty much everything that's currently known about Shafties. Good-quality 1970s Japanese copies, imported by Rose-Morris, who also had the budget Avon brand. The main visual differences between these & real Ricks are the tuners and the somewhat more garish finish. They also have a single truss rod as opposed to the 2 in a Rick neck, and are of course a lot cheaper! Beyond saying "mid-70s ish" they're quite hard to age due to the lack of serial number. 1978 is probably the latest it's likely to be, as most Japanese manufacturers were turning towards original designs by the end of the decade. £300 isn't at all bad for a good through-neck vintage copy these days. Looking forward to seeing some pics. Jon.
7. I've taken a few I was quite chuffed with: I'll have a trawl & see if I can find a few more. Jon.
8. Very pretty - I have the identical 5er (awaiting a defret) and they're really nicely made for the money. A lot of bass for £150. Jon.
9. Very, very nice! I wish I had something appropriate for a trade, I've had nagging GAS for a black-block P for ages, and a vintage JapCrap classic would be ideal. Anyway - these have been discussed here before - Happy Jack bought one a couple of years ago: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=5631 There's not much info out there apart from what's linked on the thread - these are pretty rare & genuinely don't come up too often. All the general vintage Ibanez copy stuff applies - built by Fujigen & the quality of their Fender clones was why they got the MIJ Fender contract, never common in the UK due to the popularity of the cheaper-but-identical Antoria range, & 35 - odd years on, most of them are modified, trashed or both. This is a bit of a collectable, particularly in original condition, and I'm very relieved you didn't mod it - and if I had the cash, the space & could justify it, I'd bite yer arm off for this one. Jon.
10. I feel that any relationship in which one partner feels they have a right to make huge, life-changing demands of the other, is fundamentally broken. If your partner cannot - or will not - accept a fundamental aspect of who & what you are, then that relationship is a sham and you will only ever be dissatisfied and unhappy. Jon
11. A refinished bass with some original parts? I don't know a great deal about vintage Fender values but that seems absurdly optimistic. Bloody good luck to him. Jon.
12. I don't mind one way or t'other tbh. J.
13.
I must have misread his post, to me it looks like its suggesting a new forum separate from the other ones in the marketplace should be made, which i think is a little OTT.
While a subforum would be fine, I don't think a dedicated forum is OTT. Currently we have bass guitars, bass amplification & bass effects as individual forums, followed by anything & everything else musically related - which currently encompasses everything from BadAss IIs to Mongolian nose-flutes, via your kids' old Bob The Builder CDs! Well, theoretically. Given that the vast majority of us seem to be modders, tinkerers, tweakers, bodgers & builders, I don't think a bass components forum is at all unrealistic. J.
14.
Oh and I'll give you £100 for it if you like.
Ignore him - I'll give you £150! Head over to http://www.21frets.com for all the JV-related information known to man, gathered in one convenient website. There's also a very useful forum too, most of the info is guitar-centric but JV basses are covered, and much of it applies to both. Any chance of lots of hi-res pics? Jon.
15. Definitely, absolutely - yes. It's not like it hasn't been suggested before, though. I suggest making this thread into a poll - simple yes or no. Jon.
16. Much better show than last week. Magazine were great, head & shoulders above the other post-punk "heritage" acts Jools has been featuring. Little bit sad without McGeoch though, & a shame he didn't get a mention. Seasick Steve was excellent too. Jon.
17. Does anyone else find that they sort of "naturally" compose stuff in unusual time signatures? I do this all the time, and it's in no way contrived - I think I've just spent so many years listening to prog & the more experimental end of metal that I don't know what's "normal" any more. Jon.
18. Detective Wars is it? OK then! You might be right but for me the pic isn't clear enough to see the damage quite as specifically. This is what I see: It's originally been something like this: Someone's simply attempted to replace this type of nut with a standard Fender one. There's no slot for it to sit in so they've glued what looks like a roughly quartered bit of pine dowel (from an Ikea knock-up wardrobe!) behind it to hold it in place. The pic isn't clear enough to be able to see any "modification" behind the nut, but if I'm right it's unlikely. I'm not sure if it's had the lacquer removed on the 1st fret position but if so it's not been done at the same time as the "repair" - the nut's brand new but the edge of fretboard timber's darkened & a bit grimy-looking. I think that nut's been recently bodged on just to sell the bass, & looking at it again, I don't even think it's glued in, the strings are holding it in the "slot", which is why there's a gap at the end of the board. Anyway, I think we'll have to agree to differ over this - sensibly neither of us are considering buying it! J.
19.
Right its £90 now Someone has to want it for that money
I wanted it when Noisedude sold it! Too many g*it*rs already but if you keep on reducing it I might just have to jump on me bike & come down & get it! Stunning little plank, particularly for that pittance. Jon.
20. Not sure what you think needs major work. I'd just remove the existing nut & bit of scrap wood & replace it with the right width Gibson-shape nut, which this would have had originally - there won't have been wood removed from behind the nut. I can't see any actual damage on the fingerboard side, it looks a bit dull so maybe the finish is off but I can't be sure. I certainly wouldn't consider this to be a big deal on a bass of this age/ilk, the worst problem might be that whatever cack-handed bodgster did this used superglue - in which case you'd have to be careful & patient removing the crap that's on it. This bass in A1 condition? Probably £120 - £150, JapCrap Ps are pretty common and no-names/obscure names don't interest collectors, the way Ibanezes or Grecos & such might. J.
21.
Anyone know anything about this Craftsman P Bass?
Not without playing it or taking it to bits, but it looks to be a nice mid 70s JapCrap P. I've seen a couple of Craftsman-brand JapCraps come up over the last few years, but I don't know anything about the brand or who made them. One thing - despite what the seller says, it isn't solid wood. Worst case scenario is that it's ply, if you're lucky it'll be butcher-block, or a sandwich with front & back veneers. The telltale big black oversprays on the contours are a dead giveaway. The only other issue is a dodgy nut - this bass would have had a Gibson-type rather than the Fender style someone's bodged onto it. Simple job to sort that if you don't like the way it looks. I'd say the £99 BIN isn't unreasonable. Jon.
22. Compared to the emulsioned one on Ebay @ £400, that's a bit more like it. Any danger of some bigger/clearer pics? Jon.
23.
Greco
Nice - that's early 70s, not 80s like the listing says. Same as the Ibby 2388B/DX, looks in nice condition for its age. Wonder why someone's stuck a P cover on it though, it looks stoopid. J.
24.
Not mine, but exactly the same - nice looking Ibby Blazer.
Lovely grain on that Blazer - but that's got 2 bids at £350? Incredible. J.
25.
i think nothing will happen. i can't see how this is a problem for Fender or Rickenbacker, you still have to buy the bass to be able to replace the parts. Should they then send out C&D's to the pickup maker who make them to fit Fenders and Rics?
RIC will do exactly that if the pickup looks anything like the original - all their designs are registered as trademarks. J.
