1.
What happens if you write a drum part that's really unnatural for a musician, for example, a drummer? I've played bass parts written by other musicians before, and although harmonically/melodically they may have written specific parts to affect the music, their sense of positioning on the instrument often makes parts very difficult to play, because they lack a practical knowledge of that instrument. I think then, you (as the experienced musician for that part) are entitled to "improvise" and change the notes to make it playable and keep the composer's implied harmonic and meldoic ideas. Also, I know a lot of drummer's who complain about drum notation that is written by other musicians who don't understand the drum kit and tend to just change it to keep the feel but make it less unnatural.
Creative input/interpretation from my bandmates is welcome (as long as it works!) and a very important part of the learning/rehearsing process, which is why I mentioned the way a piece can evolve. I play drums a little - enough to know whether a part is physically playable - and am completely happy for a proper drummer to embellish, refine or even change a part completely, as long as it remains consistent with the feel I was aiming to achieve. The same goes for guitar parts. However the place for this is the practice room, not in front of an audience. Speaking of the practice room, plenty of improvisation happens there - we often play unstructured jams for (what seems like) hours - it can be inspirational, hilarious, brilliant, chaotic, disastrous - but to an audience I think it would be crushingly, painfully dull! J.
 2. I play in an originals band, on stage I don't improvise. The notes I play are chosen specifically because they work, they are appropriate for the song and the musical context of the part of the song that they are a component of. They are the right notes. I write my band's music - when I compose a bass part, I know exactly what I'm doing, what I'm aiming to create and why. To spontaneously change basslines live would be pointless and would likely clash with what the other musicians are doing. Obviously compositions can evolve through rehearsal & performance, & if for example it occurs to me that playing something differently might enhance a song, I'll develop the idea on my own & then try it at practice to see if it actually works in context. As a composer I feel it's faintly insulting to suggest that performing a song as it was written is somehow musically stunted and illiterate. Jon.
 3.
Sold for £124. So much for my estimate of £180. With a hard case too! Jon may over-rule me , but I'd prefer this Antoria to the fretless Maya being sold for £199 at the moment. But I think someone got a real bargain with the Antoria.
I think that Maya's well overpriced - wishful thinking really. JapCrap prices on Ebay have taken a bit of a hammering lately, Antoria particularly for some reason - I think a year or two ago that one would have fetched £180 easily. J.
 4.
Another one of those Lincoln basses. Yet again the seller thinks it's Matsumoku. With the case (look at that llining!), the BIN price seems a good deal to me. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Lincoln-Bass-vintage...=item2309ef5a15 Edit: Right down the bottom the seller links to the well known page in the Fernandes catalogue.
Good price and it looks in nice condition. Interesting, he's clearly done his research and therefore knows full well it's demonstrably not a Matsumoku. But he still can't resist the lure of bullsh!t. D'you think that's an Ebay thing? J.
 5. Stunning classic JapCrap at the best price I've seen for an SB series bass in a long time. If the timing was a bit more favourable, I'd bite your arm off for this. Jon.
 6. Get down your local car boot, you will probably find an Encore Strat for £20 that you can pull apart & rebuild. Once you know what you're doing (and there really isn't much to learn - electric guitars & basses are fundamentally very simple) you can pick & choose your own parts to build a bass or guitar, rather than just having whatever comes in a kit. Jon.
 7. Classic 70s tranny amp, as used by Stuart Adamson in the Skids & early Big Country. I had the bass version (VS Bassamp 1x15 combo) as my first proper amp in the early 80s. Love the way the front panels on these light up green in the dark. Jon.
 8.
Edit: Early Antoria, if claimed date is correct
That's BurritoBass off 'ere selling that, and yet again, I really should be on commission! As far as I can tell, that bass is very unlikely to be any later than 1972. J.
 9. Definitely a strong stylistic influence going on there - I do like the red quilty one. There's a Schecter as well with a similar close-but-legal look, can't remember what it's called though. J.
 10.
Is that any think like the Cort ones?? Seen a new Cort in a shop very like that but in white and black binding.
Interesting - haven't seen a Cort faker before. Got a link? J.
 11.
Modern one, looks same as the Wesley ones, wonder if the flame is real.
I picked up one of these when Wesley were banging them out for £99 - they're really surprisingly well put together, the flame is real, as is the wood edge-binding. They really only bear the most superficial resemblance to a Rick - apart from the body shape everything else is a generic modern neck-through bass. Still quite nice though, mine's presently in bits awaiting having the back/neck refinished - I played one gig with it & half the thin black paint on the back just rubbed off! J.
 12. You'd be better off posting this in the Ebay section in Marketplace. Better yet, if you have a price in mind for it, put it in the Basses For Sale section. No Ebay or PayPal fees there. Jon.
 13. Whereabouts are you, and how much do you want for it? Rules of the For Sale forum are that you have to give a price. Jon.
 14.
+1 for the love! What a great project and a very tastey looking Bass to boot! I really like the matching headstock and pickguard. A combo' you very rarely see! I also love how the cream pup cover matches with the maple fingerboard too - that's a really nice touch I think. 'Collars and cuffs' he he Defintely one of the nicest DIY projects I have seen on BC. Congrats and well done!
Why thank you sir! I'm actually really chuffed you picked up on the pup/fretboard thing! J.
 15. Surprised Geddy Lee hasn't been mentioned yet - Rush have used keyboards since 1977 and necessarily he'll default to synth bass parts, either with his left hand or using bass pedals/sequencers. Rush's keyboard-heavy 80s era produced several songs with no bass guitar part. Jon.
 16.
Make him an offer off ebay, then report for copyright infringement, linking whatever he ripped the description from.
Good idea if he was flogging anything I wanted. I've got the exact same bass branded Maya, in bits down in the lab - one's enough... J.
 17.
It's not an eBay link, but I spotted an Aria pro II ZZB (the pointy blue one!) going for £149 in Cash Converters, Dalry Road in Edinburgh this afternoon. I'm skint and not a pointy bass fan, but it could be a good find for someone.
Bit dear for me - but I'm half tempted to say I want it just to see if some miserable, weasel-faced scrote will jump in & grab it first. Which reminds me - I must start that vintage Washburn thread in Porn... J.
 18. I bloody wish I was! I should advertise my services on Fleabay (at a very reasonable £50 p/h plus 25% commission) - that would save people trying to shoehorn in entirely irrelevant discussions about some guitar or other. I like the idea that I have a recognisable style. People will be saying I have a character next! J.
 19.
I know these things! Anyway - I thought I'd have a word in his lughole: Let's see what happens... J.
Just to drag this kicking & screaming back on-topic, I got a reply, quite made my morning & the best laugh I've had in days:
Dear mister scam artist suggest next time you research properly the history of fender and don't waste other peoples time with drivel like this in the hope of driving the price down
to the power of pi Of course he didn't quite have the testicles to post my "drivel" on the listing. J.
 20.
The trouble is, the libertarian in me recognises that the purpose of communication is to get your message across, and if I understand what was said then presumably that's a piece of successful communication. lolz l8rz m8
Absolutely - and language, both written and spoken, is a fluid medium and in a constant state of evolution, alteration and adaptation. We should accept and embrace these changes. And I'll be doing that, right after our new Americanized, txtspk, glottal, mispronounced, misspelled, bastardised, misused dialect has driven me into an indiscriminate killing frenzy. J.
 21.
Ordinarily I`d suggest Fender MIM, either Precision or Jazz depending on yr preference, as they are, imo, better instruments, but u said it has to look the part for metal, and T-birds certainly do that.
Nowt wrong with playing a Jazz in a metal band - ask Mendez from Opeth: And that's not just any old Jazz either. Jon.
 22.
Jon, thanks for that. I'll view it with academic rather than financial interest.
There's another one being discussed here! J.
 23.
Why oh why oh why oh why do people put "brought" when they mean "bought". I see it all the bleedin' time and it gets on my hairy tits. I'm not being racist or facetious with this but as a Scot I wonder if it is a thing that English people commonly say?
It's a thing that lazy & ignorant people say, based on the fact the words are spelled similarly and it's way too much effort to bother differentiating them. J.
 24.
How can you be sure it's not a transitional example, perhaps of a prototype with unique features?
I know these things! Anyway - I thought I'd have a word in his lughole:
Hi - your bass is a Japanese copy from the mid 1970s. It was probably originally branded Columbus. There are numerous ways of identifying it: no Fender has ever had an Made In Japan-stamped neckplate, there were no Japanese Fenders in the 70s anyway. The body has large black oversprays on the contours, this is to disguise the fact it's made from plywood - no Fenders have ply bodies or this type of overspray. The pickups have rounded ends typical of Japanese Jazz copies - Fenders are squared-off. The bass has a Gibson-type nut and has originally had a large chrome truss rod cover - the 3 screwholes for the cover are clearly visible - you will never see this on any Fender. There are various other details but these are the main & obvious ones. I'd recommend that you change the title of your listing to indicate that the bass is a Japanese copy, otherwise you're breaking numerous Ebay terms & conditions and your auction will likely get cancelled. Cheers - Jon.
Let's see what happens... J.
 25. Plywood Columbus copy with a crap sticker on it, being sold by either a very stupid & gullible person or a liar. What do you think? Jon.
