Jools Holland Show - Still Worth Watching?
steve-soar replied to spongebob's topic in General Discussion
The format is still valid, it's the programming that sucks. The live scene is in rude health but Laters hit rate is tragically low. Used to love the 'here comes the weekend' vibe of the Tube
f***ing MAGNIFICENT. -
Whistle test was brilliant, I used to love those old thirties cartoons they used to have when they didn't have live bands.... And the Otway performance of Cheryl's going home, remains one of my most watched youtube vids, brilliant! Mind you, I'm still lamenting the passing of "something else" and the brilliant Tony Wilson, now there was a live music programme! I only ever watch Later if Richard Thompson is one, which he seems to be every other series. Otway OGWT
Something Else, fantastic. Revolver with Peter Cook anyone? -
It's still a great dhow as it'd the only live music programme on UK tv these days. A comment earlier mentioned that the standard of bands on the dhow these days is a reflection of theistic business these days. I have to agree, surely it's time for a new movement, in the way we experienced punk, new romantic, electro-pop or the like in the past? Or maybe today's youth have been brainwashed by Simon Cowell and the modern obsession with 'celebrity' rather than talent?
The "cult of personality" is at epidemic levels. The vast majority of people are sheep, willing slaves. Money needs to be circulated, trends are therefore geared towards lowest common denominators of entertainment. It's been this way since mass communication and with globalization reaching a zenith it will saturate and feed upon itself until weird and strange forms emegre, the like of which we can't imagine. -

Guitarists who don't know what they are playing
I would guess that most of the members here who say that they have no theory probably actually do have a fair amount under their belts albeit subconcious. I learned to read at 8 years old and used that skill once, aged 10 in the school orchestra (violin) From 15 years onwards, I just played. I could not read nowdays even if my life depended on it. I would place myself in the intermediate bracket when it comes to playing, certainly no higher, but I enjoy what I do and, along with the acoustic duo thing I do with the wife, I'm in six bands at present. Some with a few gigs and some with lots. I'm not in any situations where reading is required and although I do wish I had continued to read (for my own sense of achievement) I have never needed it in the last 50 years as I enjoy playing covers and it's not been required. Yes, I probably am lazy but I don't have a problem getting the gigs I enjoy. My biggest problem is not being able to say no. I have played with musicians who read and have had both good, and terrible experiences. The terrible ones were usually either down to them not being able to actually play very well, or trying to casually start conversations where they could talk about their reading and theory skills. From time to time, one does encounter a certain snobbery attached to reading. I see this as their problem, not mine. If I don't know a number, I'll learn it by ear. It's never been a problem in the past and I don't foresee it being one in the future due to what I enjoy doing and who I enjoy doing it with. There are many "journeymen" on this site who can do the job with the experience they've gained over the years and 50% of that experience is probably subconcious theory. Many here play for relaxation / therapy / fun / socialising etc. The thought of learning to read would probably spoil all that in one swoop. If you need it for your gigs / career, self achievement, fine, learn. If you don't, just enjoy playing. The only rule is that there are no rules to enjoying music. You can do that at any level as long as you are content with where you are.
Amazing post. -
Ok.... Let me just say that I don't have a problem with anyone that doesn't read, especially if they can play.My only argument is when people say that it won't benefit them, because I honestly don't know anyone that would say that it hasn't been of some use to them in one way or another. I'm not talking about sight reading the Charlie Parker Omni, I'm talking about a basic understanding. If you decide that you don't want to do it,fine...but if you say it's because it won't be beneficial to you,I will beg to differ.
Education and knowledge are not to be feared. -
Your poll is flawed, as I do have a little bit of interest. Don't like the royals generally, and I never bought into the Princess Di thing, but if there's anyone that I'm OK with then it's Wills and Harry. His bride to be is a good lookin' lass and I think that they could be worthy figureheads for the country should the Queen ever go and we manage to avoid the problem of charles. So yeah, marginal interest. But I won't be watching on my free day off!
First dibs.
