Hi everyone. I bought this great passive bass ( Vol Vol Tone ) new from GuitarGuitar in Feb 2017. Serial Number 160304485 - see headstock edge photo. Only occasional playing at home so no noticeable wear apart from very slight signs on some frets under the E string frets 3 to 7 ish. Only noticed this when packing and polishing the frets, oiling the board. It still has the Lakland ST/ST 45 65 85 105 round wound strings on and they’re still lively and seem to suit these powerful pickups. I don’t use st/st on my other basses but I’d stick with them on this bass. Superb P pickup and a great tone control for lots of very useable tones. I had the 3 pots upgraded to the more durable CTS pots on the advice of Steve Barratt at guitarlodge.co.uk nearby in Felixstowe. CTS are 1/4 inch shafts so Steve drilled out and shimmed the original knobs, just this year so this bass is ready to rock. It’s a dense Ash body so 10lb 5oz / 4.6kg but nicely balanced and you get the advantage of super clear tones and sustain. These earlier years of the 44-64 have the lovely white neck binding and full white pearl blocks on a super dark rosewood board in this case. The more recent years version don’t have the binding , just a dark abalone corner to each block. The pickups and hardware are the same as on Lakland’s USA models. They’re shipped back to Chicago for checking and Pleking of the fretboard ( computer aided machine levelling process using sensors to eliminate even the slightest high spots of the frets ). See photo of Plek Tag 25 May 2016. I’ve packed it up already in inner cardboard coffin type box, then packed well in usual large outer box. Please see my feedback - when 8 say MINT I mean No blemishes or swirls or tiny marks or dinks etc. Thought I was going to send it off for commission sale but decided not to, hence packed already and hence less than tip top photos but I think they show what you need. There are some pics in a low sun from last week and the bright ones were taken by GGuitar in Birmingham for me to verify it was a pukker example I was buying ( I sent two back.) Make me a sensible offer and it’s yours. You will not be disappointed! ( UK delivery only , on me.) Only selling as I’ve enjoyed it for nearly 7 years and have recently splashed out on other basses which need funding. Specs then photos.

Thanks Misdee. I did resolve this ( well, WE did , after consultations above ). Easy enough to turn the small Gain screw 1/4 turn at a time, then check change in Gain. The Passive mode is just quiet. The Active mode is healthily loud, any more gain and it distorts. I’ll run it in Active anyway, which is my preference for my Active with Passive option basses. Cheers. Quent.

Hi Sandy, Thanks for your advice. It all makes perfect sense of course. I got thrown by misinterpreting something I read online about the LH3 gain adjustment and the fact that this is the only bass I’ve had with such a Vol drop off when in passive vs active (set flat). eg My Sandbergs all have same perceived Vol in passive , near enough. I’m not going to equalise the Act/Pass volumes ( by turning Act gain down) because I mainly play through headphones and a Digitech BP355 multi pedal which gives me decent volume when it’s Vol is set at Max , (99! ) so lowering the LH3 gain would spoil my Volume Fun , with no headroom left in the BP355. Thank you all, you’ve cleared that up for me nicely 👏💥. I did enjoy adjusting the tiny gain screw using a Xmas Cracker mini screw driver set I found in a drawer! Preowned, so adjusted from prev setting. 1/4 turn created distortion so back a bit until loud ……and clear. On your pickup height suggestion Sandy, I tried raising to help with passive signal but it didn’t bridge the gap to Act Vol noticeably and started distorting so reset heights to Standard suggested by Lakland ( Open strings - E 4mm bridge Humbucker and 4.4 mm on the E at Neck, (slightly less for the Gs). I can live with feeble passive as I like the active pallet so much, I’ll just use that. Other basses I have can do both really well ( usually tone control for the passive mode, but not on my Skyline 44-02). Don’t gig so no issue playing live ( Had fun in the 90s playing in pubs ). Settled on Midrange internal dip switch setting of 500Hz to get a great punchy almost fat tone set flat , then get as fat as you want from there or roll off bass and add Treb Mids for more clank etc. I only just discovered a really good video on Youtube by a guy running through all the LH3 9 dipswitch settings and sounds. Throughout the Mids about 8/10 , bass and treb 5/10 both pickups on , massive difference dropping from the stock 600Hz mid rang centre to 450Hz and lower. Hopefully here’s the link and a photo of the 9 Mids settings he refers to. Thanks again you guys! 👍🤘 Quent

Thanks Dad! That makes sense , as Lfalex said. Perhaps my misunderstanding about the LH3 screw altering the Gain of both Passive and Active modes. So, as Passive is feeble currently, you’re saying turn the gain down ( as you seem to think it’s only Active gain ). Excuse my iggorunss ! I’ll try 1/10 turns either way and see what happens. Will report back. Cheers. Quent

Hi Lfalex. I see what you’re saying about your other brand of Preamp but from what I’ve read, the Lakland LH3 gain screw alters the gain of both active and passive modes, rather than just the active? Perhaps a Lakland owner will clear that up? Specifically someone who’s had a go at turning the LH3 screw… …….that’s what I’m chickening out of ! ( In case I physically mess up the electronics board.) Thanks. Quent

Hi Lakland fans! Have any of you turned the small Gain adjustment screw on the LH3 pre amp board ? ** I don’t want to dive in and over do it and knacker the board.** I have a 2011 Skyline 44-02 and whilst loud enough with the Pre engaged it is noticeably feeble in passive mode. I’m thinking, turn up the gain a bit to help in passive mode , then turn Vol down a bit if too crazy in Active mode. So, is it clockwise turn for increased gain ? Would a 1/4 turn be excessive to start with? The pic below I copied shows the cross headed screw circled in red. Thanks for any help! Cheers. Quent.

Just bought a mint Epi Thunderbird Classic Pro IV from Paul S and it was a very easy deal with Paul’s detailed and very accurate description of the bass in his post. Better still, got to meet Paul himself at a halfway point today for the hand over and it was a real pleasure to meet such an experienced player. So PLUS One here for a great guy to deal ! Good luck with your upcoming gigs Paul and thanks again for a smooth deal. Bass played this arvo and loved it. 👍 Cheers. Quent

Thanks for the Bumps guys. Guess what? It plays tunes too !! Great Glock 2 band to launch the excellent clear and punchy Haussel pickups. I have another Maruszczyk to keep me happy here and need funds to pay off some other basses so she’s got to go. Lucky to have had her for home play only for a few years. Cheers.

Thanks for the recommendation! Yes, an endless variety of tones available and she’s a real beauty. At this price, I’ll get the same on here as if anyone buys it from the gallery direct ( their commission vs me paying postage to get it back from them and then post on to you - Palaver ! ) PM me and I can drop slightly on price. Hi everybody, Here’s my 2018 Sire V7 Marcus Miller 5 Gen 1 in mint condition, not played that much as I have a few to play fortunately. I bought it new Dec 2018, then got a Sire Fretless 5 and P7 Gen 2 fiver so I need to shed one of them. Sold it before ,briefly ,then bought it straight back on Basschat! I need to pay off a recent purchase and my Bass Fund is empty. They’re exciting basses. Very versatile, a controllable powerful preamp whether Gen 1 or 2. I’ll only consider close offers because this is in perfect condition and even the nice tort pick guard faint swirls have buffed out. I’ll use the original Sire cardboard coffin box and an outer with packing between the two. The pickups are single coil pickups made with a fiber bobbin, Alnico 5 magnets, and heavy Formvar magnet wire. They are positioned in the ‘60’s position. Like everything else on this bass, the pickups are made by Sire Guitars. This 18-volt preamp is the most versatile preamp I have used on a bass. When strapped up or balanced on the knee, the bass balances very well without any neck dive. Specifications: Body Material – North American Alder. Gorgeous creamy antique white gloss. Weight - 10 lbs 6oz / 4.7kg using accurate digital scales. Body Shape – Marcus Miller Jazz Type , nicely balanced, no neck dive. Neck Material – 1 Piece Hard Maple with two graphite rods. Really nice wavy figuring on this neck. Neck Shape – C-Shape Scale – 34” Fingerboard – Very Dark Rosewood (looks like Ebony but Spec with bass said Rosewood, darkest I’ve ever seen, beautiful. ) with Ivory coloured Binding. Fingerboard Radius – 7.25” Frets – Medium Small, 20 Frets String Nut – /5 String: Natural Bone @ 46mm width Inlays – White Pearloid Block Neck Joint – 4 Bolt Steel Square Plate Pickups – Marcus Miller Super Jazz Single Coil. Alnico 5 magnets Electronics – Pre Amp is an 18v Marcus Heritage 3 system. Both batteries OK at 9.1 v checked today. Controls : See photo of layout. The knobs protrude rather oddly but that’s how they are on this model. Volume/ Passive Tone (Stacked Pot) Tone also works alongside the EQ Pickup Blend Treble Mid/Mid Frequency Sweep (Stacked Pot) Bass, Mini Toggle (Active/Passive) See photo of control layout. Bridge - Marcus Big Mass 1, with big block type saddles vs barrels. Through Body. String Spacing @ Bridge – 5 String: 18mm 6 month old set of D’Addario EXL170 45 65 80 100 125 ( 130 replaced) Bass not played much but only due to having a good few to play luckily. Hardware Finish – Chrome Pickguard – Tortoiseshell on 3 ply White/Black/White Thanks for looking. Ask if you need more info.

What a coincidence ET ! v similar paths but perhaps not beyond Czech beauties. Presume you’d agree that these 2016 NT4s are well worth the £s ? Superb feel, tone, sustain and punch from the Aguilar electonics. Thanks for the other Likes you guys and on my other 2 basses up for grabs currently ( Maruszczyk Absolution 5a and LTD Dlx J-1004 ). Cheers 🤘🤓 -

Hi everyone. FINAL Drop to £385 inc UK Delivery ( NO offers at this price ). Now considering TRADES rough value £500. Trades : for approx £500 value for 4 string Active with Passive switch/ Push Pull. 2 pickups and Blend control. Tone Control in the passive mode. Must be in excellent condition and 4.1kg , 9lbs 3oz maximum weight. I will not sell my ESP LTD for less than this final drop to £385 including UK delivery. I will withdraw this bass by mid January. More bass for yer dosh than most on here so please read the detail below. I had this bass at The Gallery but have decided to get it back home and try again here. If you want the gigbag + D Tuner which fits but doesn’t match the others , the price is * £425 *. The old replies from my first posting of the bass here in summer 2023 are still on view. Excellent build quality, finish, top electronics and versatility. UK only delivery included. See recommendation in comments below by Harlequin74 ( July 15 ) who played the bass at The Gallery. ” Just a quick recommend for this bass. Tested it at Bass Gallery when there to pick up another bass. Lovely bass, with fantastic build quality and amazing tonal variation with John East preamp. Looks lovely too. “ I bought this 2002 (ESP) LTD DLX J-1004 in June 2020 from Basschatter “Bass Wielder “. He had upgrades done professionally about 5 years ago and it gives a superb variety of tones. It’s exactly 5kg , 11lbs using my accurate scales but is very well balanced and is therefore fine with a wide grippy shoulder strap and when you’re seated it’s reassuringly plonked and stable on your thigh compared to some light weights. Upgraded with 2 pairs of switchable Hot-Rod coils and a John East Uni-Pre. It has a lovely dark rosewood neck with abalone markers and side dots. Ash body with golden Quilted maple top and gorgeous binding containing abalone shards ( looks like that). So a hell of a lot of bass features and top electronics on offer here. Notice the great top edge contouring (photo) with rear scoop and front curve for arm rest comfort. See further details below for the Eternal Guitars and Hot-Rods detail on the windings and 3 way switches for each pair of coils. Series/Parallel/Single. The Modifications. *East UK Uni pre - Active /Passive bass pre-amp that simply is world class. *East UK BLI - battery low indicator tells you when 9v is almost out of power. Easiest to look at the Uni Pre using the John East link below. See 5 knob version. No noticeable change in Vol when pulling / push Passive tone knob ( sits above the line of 4 knobs on my bass). Line of 4 goes Vol Blend Mids/sweep Treb/Bass with pull for extra sizzle. The Treb knob is slightly scratchy when turning it but fine once in position. The passive tone works in active mode too but for me best turned full on for best clarity from the active EQ. *Hot-Rods custom made pickups - Specially made for this bass. It is like having four Jazz style pickups in a two shell package (3 way switchable between each pair of coils). The combination of this and the East UK has turned this instrument into a very versatile beast. From Marcus Miller slap to Jaco jazz to Pino P-bass if you have the skills ! 20 year old bass but only has a few small marks on the thick gloss coated body so they look no worse than a bit of dust on the bass. See arrows on photos. 1/2 inch crack in the gloss only, under the neck pocket, see photo looking under the neck joint. It’s stable so is not an issue. Some pick playing lines on body under strings at playing area. It’s quite a vintage golden colour on the body top. One or two minor scratch marks if you peer very closely and an edge gloss chip on the headstock (tuner-side ) so minor cosmetics only considering the age. I’ve polished the frets and a fretboard clean with a little oil. Frets look like they’ve had a proper levelling because it plays superbly, no buzz and actually sings when not plugged in. Minimal neck relief and the strings run from 2.2mm to 1.8mm E to G at 12th when fretted at 1st. Room for the saddles to go lower. This is all making me have second thoughts about selling again. Selling to help fund other purchases. I’ve had my fun with this (ESP)LTD J1004 experimenting for hours with the brilliant John East Uni-Pre, Two 3 way switches and some blending of the pups. It’s endless what you can create. I need to start replacing some basses if I’m to experiment further. I’ve spent up and now have no room to have more basses. A Note copied below on the bass’s modifications , from Dave at Eternal Guitars and (Hot Rod) Pickups. UK to Bass Wielder ( Hope that’s ok BW. All technical ) Unit 8A Littlemead Business Centre, Tangmere Rd, Chichester PO20 2EU, United Kingdom "Hi. Glad that you like the pickups so far! Okay, wiring: they are wound and wired in a similar fashion to a normal humbucking pickup but of course with the exception that each coil is a true Jazz bass pickup. To wire them in series you will need to join the red and green wires together and cover the join with tape or shrink tubing. If you plan to coil split, then the joined red/green will go to your switch. White is live and black is earth. Some details on the pickups: the neck pickup is two Jazz bass pickups wound to vintage specs and placed side by side - both pickups use forbon flatwork and eight magnetised poles. Either could be used individually if desired for a 'true' singlecoil sound or in series (as supplied). The bridge pickup is slightly different - it uses a vintage spec wound Jazz bass pickup nearest to the neck but the coil nearest to the bridge uses identical flatwork and magnets but with a 'hotter' coil wind. When selected on its own this coil will have a thicker and warmer single coil tone than a traditional Jazz bass. I hope this helps and please let me know if you need any help wiring them up... : ) Cheers for now, Dave Walsh Eternal Guitars & Pickups . Chichester.
