Yeah I was going to say its mainly metal music Ive seen ESP basses being played, they all have that sort of aggressive look to them, Ive occasionally seen them being played in soul bands, if I were you, I'd look at something made by spector
-
Thats bloody ridiculous, who'd pay for that when lets be honest its probbably not much difference between the standard signature model.

Hello all, This week Im in San Francisco and whilst walking along fishermans wharf I heard a blues duo playing in the street, session players and playing very well I might add, now unsuprisingly the first thing my ears tuned to was the bass player, the sound was really full and warm yet retained enough mids to bark and growl and without seeing the bass player at this point I thought to myself "thats a stingray" Well, it wasnt, when I saw the bassist he was playing one of these Now I was really supprised at the quality of sound this put out, its an Ibanez srx390. when they finished playing, I approached him and asked him about the bass, telling him how impressed I was with the sound. I asked him what model it was and his response was this "Man I dont know what model it is or whatever I just pick em up and play em" and I thought to myself, considering how good this guy was, that this was an attitude towards bass playing that had really paid off for the guy, not fussy about brand names or anything. He said he payed about $250 for the bass. He went on to tell me that his faviroute bass was a new Squier vintage modified bass with active pickups in it. He said it growled more than the ibanez he was playing. I told him that without seeing his bass I thought the sound was coming from a stingray. He said to me and I quote "Man f**k all that thousand dollar bass b*llsh*t you dont need it" and went on to say that the bass he played for 20 odd years was an old yamaha he picked up for about 50 dollars. I have to say meeting this guy and listening to his views on expensive basses being un nessecary and his pick up and play attitude was pretty refreshing, instead of the whole keep buying and trying different brands trap that I myself had once fallen into. He also offered to sell me that Ibanez due to the fact he only played it occasionally instead of his squire and if I wasnt already pulling around 2 cases with me and had I been flying home that week I would of bought it.

I like it! quite a lot!

I believe its something to do with the machining process, possibly where the bodys are clamped down into place whilst the work is being carried out, had one on my usa s1 jazz also

Thanks guys, I did send a message to the guy and he said he wasnt sure but reckons it was made in korea around the 90's, so presumably westone still make copy basses or did they cease back in the 90's?

This is a point I raised in the current sx thread going on. Im now convinced it doesnt really matter where your bass is made or what it says on the headstock, there are some models of some cheap basses that play great and more expensive basses that play like sh*te

Right, I need the advice of some fellow bass geeks please. can anyone shed a little light about the background of these basses http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VINTAGE-90ger-EKO-MM...1QQcmdZViewItem Ive been on the look for a stingray style bass to pimp for a while, and although the sx stingray copy is still a front runner I thought perhaps this might be worth a look, does anyone know much about this brand and this particular model? help much appreciated Kev

Well, it just so happens Im in the USA right now, been here for 6 weeks, and went to most of the places you mentioned, will be in vegas around the same time as you oddly enough! believe me theres so much bass eye candy over here and with the dollar so weak against the pound you'll be sorely tempted....by a lot. Im not going to get something until the week I fly home, I cant be bothered with carrying it around, I could always have it shipped though I suppose. Its a shame you are'nt going to visit Austin in texas, theres live music everynight there in abundance and so far its been my faviroute stop. I am starting to get the urge to head home soon though, probbably go home after Ive done 8 weeks, its a cool country but it doesnt top England as far as Im concerned, Im a born Londoner Have a good time

I loved the feel of my fender p bass, it had the best neck I'd ever played, perfect string spacing, only thing that didnt cut it for me is I like to throw in the odd slap and pop here and there in my playing, not to the point of overplaying but the P bass just wasnt cutting it, not enough midrange or snap, so I had to go down the jazz route, I still miss that feel of the p bass though. Probbably should of had a jazz pup routed into it.
-
I hear wizard pups are about midrange more so than thud, Seymour duncans are all about highs and lows, plenty of thud in them

The way I see it is this, you get good basses and not so good basses, regardless of who its made by or how much it costs, Ive spent a lot of money before I finally learned this. Ive picked up USA fenders that played like lemons and Ive picked up cheap 200 quid peaveys that played smooth as anything. I also think that there may be a bit of a sour attitude towards brands like SX because with a few simple mods you can get a pro sounding bass at a fraction of something boutique and those that have spent far more on something that sounds only slightly better. I aways found it ironic that over the years I have spent all this money on basses, warwick, fender, Ibanez only to settle down and feel more comfortable with something far cheaper.

Generally they are ok, be warned that you cannot directly swap the tuners for fender style ones as they wont fit. The body is quite possibly some sort of ply, the pickups generally have a decent amount of output and being that its from the 70's the neck might be nicely played in. It would make a good modding project in my opinion and thatsb a lefty so if you want it I'd get it while you could. They generally go for around 100 - 150 if its a nice one. I'd sooner get one of these over a squire. hope this helps.
-
It would seem you do like your peaveys. Put it this way, all peaveys in my experience have been consistently good for the money that they cost, if you look on ebay, you often find that you can buy a second hand, made in the usa peavey for the same price or a little more as a new korean made one.
-
I think 475 quid is an excellent price even if the bass came in a pillow case, good luck with the sale someone will surely buy it at this price, and by the way, only let someone who is actually interested in buying the bass influence you in which case you should sell it with, other than that its nobody elses business. Have a bump

Actually dont worry I just found a supplier, they have some seriously nice looking basses, I think Im going to get a seafoam green jazz and throw some new pups and a bad ass on it and a white p bass and do the same

Hello Ladies and Gents, I would like to join the sx owners club, I too would like to buy one and mod it a fair bit for fun, and they look pretty decent, can anyone link me to a place that sells them? Also, as far as changing the scratchplate on them do standard mexican plates fit? or would I have to have a custom made? Thanks

Right, first week in America, Im in NYC and I thought "I'll check out some of the guitar shops see whats knocking about" so I head on down to Sam Ash and then on to a shop called Mannys which is directly opposite. Well, Sam Ash and Mannys both had a nice decent stock of basses. Sam Ash had a selection of tune basses, spector, esp, ibanez, warwick, fender etc and had a particularly nice high end Ibanez SR bass with a wenge neck and a Burl top, a ltd edition for about $759 or something thats about four hundred quid at the exchange rate at the moment, and a special edition quilted maple stingray for about $1995 agan just over a grand at todays exchange rate. I really liked the look of some of the tune basses, they almost look quite boutique and custom made. My trip ends up with me passing through NY again to get home so Im going to try and budget a bit tighter so I can nab one of these bargains possibly just before I fly home, just out of interest has anybody flown a bass back from the states and did you get stung by customs? If I get a chance I might run down to the place where they make Sadowskys, If I find any more music shops that are decent I'll flag them up on here.
