Another interesting Basschat discussion that will undoubtedly revolutionise the way we think about online discussions in years to come... 😉 Back on topic, my thoughts on The Beatles have quietly been changing throughout my adult life, not that I was really aware of it happening, it's kind of been a subconscious thing. The older I've got and the more music I've made and played over the years, I've slowly come to the realisation that if you either like your music or play your music made with strings, skins and microphones, then The Beatles are the reference point in western pop music. That doesn't mean they have to be liked by anyone/everyone as writers, performers, producers, people etc - but it's just a fact that their influence and reach is unparalleled and can be quantified through record sales, statistics, books/articles/study course about them etc. Personally, they're not my favourite band/artist of all time - that status in my tiny brain belongs to Bowie - but I listen to their music more now than I ever did when I was first playing bass in my teens and twenties. Their songwriting, musicianship, artistic curiosity and humour are just amazing - as could be seen in the recent Peter Jackson documentary.. None of this stuff is mutually exclusive IMO - whilst really endorsing everything that's been said about how great The Beatles were/are, it doesn't mean I don't appreciate just how game-changing and influential Kraftwerk were for example. Trans Europe Express and Man Machine of two of my favourite albums ever... And as for that Mozart bloke, he's way over-rated! My 19 year old son ( who plays classical piano) raves about Mozart to me all the time, but I much prefer Mendelssohn, Debussy, and Chopin. But what do I know? After all, I'm just a bass player in a couple of dodgy covers bands.. 😁

Taken on the door - 28 x £10 = £280 Refreshments profit - £22 Anonymous donations - £90 Total - £392 From that, £302 has been donated to CHUMS Charity (www.chumscharity.org), with the funds going towards their Recreational Therapeutic Service, which uses music to help children & young people suffering with extreme anxiety, and other mental health issues. And £90 has been donated to the school as our way of saying 'thank you' for the use of such a fabulous venue. Had the pleasure of meeting @Mudpup, aka Jon, at the South East Bass Bash recently and, after a brief discussion about our love of Mesa Boogie amps, we decided to do a trade. Spin forward a couple of weeks and I'm now the happy owner of what was Jon's M-Pulse 600 head, and he now has (what was) my Big Block 750. Jon was a pleasure to deal with throughout and I can't recommend him highly enough to everyone here in the Basschat community! Thanks Jon and I hope you enjoy the amp.. 👍😊 Nik

What a fab day today - so great to see good Basschat friends again after all this time , and to make some new ones too... 😊 Big thanks to @Kingbassistfor his fantastic talk - it was such a great insight into the world of the professional West End bass player! Thank you Ian... 👏👏👍 And a big thanks also to @Hamsterand Sarah, aka Mrs Hamster, for sorting out the venue and for looking after us so well today.. The coffee & pastries were perfect! 🙏 And lastly, thanks to everyone who let me have a go on their amp, bass, fx pedal etc ... I had a lot of fun. 😁 Too much nice gear to single out to be honest, but got to say that @Merton's new Trace amp, @WalMan's SkarBassOne pedal, @Captain Rumble's Vanderkleys and @Happy Jack's new build by @Andyjr1515we're all GAS inducing! Great thread Chris! I've always been a big fan of The Stranglers and years ago, between 1979 and 1980 my first band were signed to the Stranglers management company, who's offices were located by the old Borough Market near London Bridge... Their offices were on the first floor of the building, and on the ground floor was a big open space where all of The Stranglers gear was stored. As part of the management deal, we were allowed to rehearse there overnight at the weekends and we used JJ's bass rig as our PA (his rig was a 2 kilowatt PA). I remember their roadie telling me that JJ liked to use a PA with multiple cabs as his rig so he could point them in different directions across the stage to make sure he could always hear himself properly. I also remember being shown some of JJ's basses at the time, including an absolutely beautiful, black, through-neck Yamaha BB bass which I thought was about the most amazing bass I'd ever seen at the time! As well as getting to meet the band a few times, we supported them at The New Theatre in Oxford on their 'Raven Tour' , and also at the infamous London Rainbow gig in April 1980 when Hugh Cornwall was in prison for 6 weeks for possession of drugs. It was an amazing night as the band brought in loads of famous artists to sing different songs in their set.. We shared our dressing room with Toyah (who wore more clothes back then than she does now. 😉) Also on the bill that night were a certain 'beat combo' from Manchester called Joy Division. Those were the days... 😁

Hi Folks, Here's a shout out to @ped @Sibob @obbm @WalMan( and anyone else who was there that day) . I found these very low quality photos today in an old Photobucket account I set up years ago, but haven't looked at in at least 10 years. They're from the very first South East Bass Bash in Guildford in August 2007, organised by @obbm IIRC. It was a great day, made even better by the fact that I bought the lovely LPB Lakland DJ5 you can see in the photos from @P-T-Pwho very kindly delivered it to me at the Bash (now there's a bass I wish I'd never sold...). Does anyone else who was there have any photos or recollections from that day? If so, please share... 😊 Nik
