  1. Sold Rory my strings. Everything went nice and smooth!
  2. Having lines and dots doesn't challenge enough to start using your ear - at least this is how I feel. One of the reasons I bought the double bass was to develop my ear, as my, nomen omen, precision bass made me too lazy. I developed thinking about notes as patterns on my fingerboard rather than sounds I need to listen to. I know it might be just me, but it still seems like a common side effect of playing on a fretted instrument. Considering the above, the choice should be dictated by the intention behind the fretless. If it's the sound or comfort, lined will do, but if it's general musical development and taking it outside ones comfort zone, I'd say go for as plain a fingerboard as possible. I'm not an authority on that though, just my own reflections on the matter. There's also a valuable lesson in the training wheels metaphor. Children struggle so much when the wheels are finally removed, because they need to get rid of all the bad habits they developed. I'm sure motorcyclists know what 'counter steering' is, but in general, after removing the wheels (or transitioning from the tricycle to bicycle) you literally need to start pushing the handlebars to the opposite direction than you used to. The conclusion is all cyclists make poor basists, or something, I don't know
  3. Hello, Could anyone help me understand the difference between D'Addario Helicore and Zyex? What I particularly would like to know is if Helicores Pizz are brighter than Zyexes and which ones feel lighter and easier for the left hand (comparing the same tension, Medium v Medium or Light v Light that is). I know strings sound differently on different instruments, but I could use some general guidance or ideas. Cheers!
  4. For sale set of D'Addario Chromes size 100-45. Only been one day on the bass. Trimmed to fit a standard precision bass, will also be fine for any other bass. I love the feel of them, but recording wise prefer to stick with ProSteels. Come in original packaging. Price includes postage in the UK, can be picked up in person in Edinburgh as well. Cheers!
  5. For sale used set of double bass Innovation Honey (90140H) strings. Used, but in great shape. Got them as an extra with my bass, but it's not quite my cup of tea. I'm sending them in the original packaging. The price includes postage in the UK, can also be collected from the centre of Edinburgh. Let me know if you need pictures or if I can help in any way. Cheers! PS: Now for £35 ☺
  6. Edit: now for £50 or your best offer. For sale set of D'Addario Helicore strings. They are almost brand new, come in original packaging (and felt washers). Just started my double bass adventure and am trying out different sets. Need something with lower tension. I'm selling them cheap, because stupidly chose to trim the endings, but I'm sure there won't be any problems with putting them on. If it's of any help, I can measure them. The price includes postage in the UK, they can also be collected from the centre of Edinburgh. Cheers! PS: Here's the measurements and some pictures: E - 152 cm A - 155 cm D - 165 cm G - 155 cm https://drive.google.com/open?id=1LBk91hrIyLK8DvqiBAa6pomRrOi8jp37
  7. Just bught a set of double bass strings from MJJS. Got them really cheap and fast, so I couldn't ask for more! I recommend doing business with this user!
  8. That sounds terrible, I'm really sorry to read it. I'm only starting playing the DB, but am growing increasingly conscious of all the risks, I actually got my bass after a musician who was quiting because of medical reasons as well... Well, I hope you'll get better and as a novice I promise to watch for any suspicious symptoms! Thanks for the warning.
  9. What would those symptoms be, if you don't mind?
  10. Hi there, I present to you my youtube vlog and hope to hear some feedback on my playing: https://youtu.be/KHkkcIUKw1M I've played the bass guitar on and off for many years now (I'm a self-taught), but recently decided to pick up the double bass. I want to gain a different perspective on music and also make up for the things I missed when learning the bass the first time. Going fretless is such a struggle, it feels like walking in the dark, but the sound and the very character of the DB are so satisfying, smooth and so organic. Having mostly played heavy metal, these are all uncharted waters to me. Please, don't hesitate to write your remarks about anything that comes into your head. I want to develop far beyond my current musical levels and honest feedback is the best way to help me! Best, Shamrock
  11. I have been meeting with this fine gentleman for some time now and I can't recommend him highly enough: Simon Toner. Do contact Simon and see if he's someone who could help you.
  12. Hey, sorry for late reply. Bought them in October 2016, played for less than a week. Been neatly packed (put back in the original packaging) eversince. I'm moving home next week and getting rid of everything I'm not using.
  13. Set of almost new D'Addario flats for sale. Thought I would enjoy them, but they spend only few days on my bass and then I decided to go back to roundwounds. They're cut to fit on a pbass, so will do just fine on any regular scale bass. Can be collected in Edinburgh or posted at buyers expense. Cheers! PS. Forgot to mention, they're gauge 100-45.
  14. Bought a Trace Elliot amp from Frank at a very good price. The deal went fast and smooth, and the parcel was very well packaged. Pleasure to do business with. Cheers, Frank!
  15. Surprised no one mentioned Musescore. A great alternative for Sibelius, can do tab as well I think.
  16. It might be just me, but I feel like articulation on flats is harder and less noticeable. Also, they produce less unwanted noise, such as fretbuzz etc. Because of these reasons, I'd rather recommend regular gauge steel roundwound strings for starters, so you can learn to mute strings you don't play on, and to articulate (vibrato, legato) well. Then start experimenting with other gauges and types of strings and see where it gets you.
  17. For sale set of flatwound strings for electric bass. Gauge .45-.100, trimmed to fit on a pbass (so should be fine on any other regular scale bass). They're almost brand new, thought I would need them for a project, but played only a few times before they ended up picking dust (figure of speech of course, as I store them neatly packed). Can be collected in Edinburgh or posted by RM. Cheers, Shamrock
  18. One more thing about the B3, it drains batteries like crazy, so best to plug it to an ac adapter.
  19. Cheap option: Korg Pandora PX4D, should be less than 60 quid. Solid piece of equipment, lots of good tone options. If you can spend more money, I would recommend Zoom B3, works as an audio interface, comes with an oem Cubase, much more versatile than Pandora. As for headphones, would rather recommend Sennheiser HD202 than 201, but that's probably a personal choice.
  20. Are you sure the A string is properly wound on the tuning machine? I mean so that its angle on the nut is big enough? (hope I managed to explain it)
  21. I've been using Alpine Music Safe Pro for many years now and I couldn't be more happy with them. Note that their price is much more reasonable (for such a simple item) than ones recommend above.
  22. "If you're the smartest person in the room, then you're in the the wrong room." - I couldn't agree more with that motto.
