There was a big delay in my workshop being delivered but it turned up today woo hoo!! Hopefully get it finished and start moving all of the machines in by the weekend then I can start building again! I've been having withdrawal as I've not built anything for about 3 months 😁
-
I have done a set up on it now the neck needed about 1/2 turn which I did in two 1/4 turns about 8 hours apart then I left it overnight, checked it this morning and the action needed to be lowered a little bit and it plays lovely now Thanks everyone for the advice....... 👍🏻

I'll have to try and dig out my capo! @Bridgehousehow long would you recommend leaving it to settle between adjustments? 👍🏻

Thats what I've changed to, I've never had nylon tapewounds before but I'm loving the feel and sound of them!....👍🏻
-

Hi all I changed strings from a set of flats to a set of black tapewounds and now I've got a fret buzz on the 1st fret on the E and A strings and can't figure out why its happening, any ideas anybody? 👍🏻
-

Thats a bonus then! I'll just be using them as tops anyway and I've got a half decent scrap merchant just down the road so I'll be able to scrap the metal parts and hoprfully get a few quid towards the build!? I have been looking on marketplace but I haven't seen any local as yet but I'll kerp looking I'm no eco warrior or anything but I think by the likes of us using reclaimed timber it helps do our bit to reduce climate change and not buy exotic timber thats been shipped half way round the world also is a plus....... 👍🏻
-
Like you I've started making all my basses and guitars out of reclaimed timber or furniture that I've managed to salvage out of a skip or free on facebook, my next project is going to be made from mahogany snooker table sides and my little boys old bed, I've been trying to keep my eye out for old pianos but I can't seem to find them anywhere? Where do you get yours from and do you get yours free or do you buy them? 👍🏻

I'm not planning to this time!! 😁 Well I suppose anything with me can happen! Black stain with yellow grain fill could work?...........👍🏻

I'm hopefully going to have my new workshop up and running by the end of next week so I thought I'd print off the template for the new body I'm going to be using this neck as a reference but make the new one out of Mahogany, I'm trying to be more sustainable with my builds so I might use some Oak I've got for the fretboard? The body is going to have a Mahogany back but I'm not sure of the top as yet I'm going to have to see what I've got/can get? Possibly Black stained Oak with the grain filled White?? Its still going to have a MM style pickup in a ramp style cover, not sure of the hardware colour as yet more than likely will be black?

My choice would be the one on the far right, I think that's a really nice shorter Dolphin-esque shape!!....... 👍🏻

NBD: It's a Tiger (??) bass I'm pleasantly surprised with the tone, build quality and playability! I went for it cos its kinda got a fortress-ish vibe to it! Its immaculate the old fella who I got it off only played it twice after trying bass for the first time and decided its not for him, it was only £40 aswell! Bargain!!......... 👍🏻
-
I didn't get it to start off with as I thought it said "Flendar" but then realised it said "Ffendar" 😂😂

This is one weird shaped body!! I wonder what was going through their mind when they designed it!! 🤔 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Guitar-project-for-spares-body-custom-pineapple-shaped-can-be-Bass-or-Guitar-/203637477239?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l6249&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0

I did look at a few 'kids' short scale basses but I didn't want to spend too much incase he doesn't stick with it! I think I'll try and convert/make one for him as I did make a electric guitar for his sister! I might try and use a 4 string cigar box bridge to get round the string spacing issue? ..... 👍🏻
-
Hi all My little boy (he's only 7) really wants to start learning bass but obviously my 34" are way to long for him to play and a 3/4 size is too long aswell so my idea is to convert a spare 24.75" guitar neck into a bass by changing the nut and build him a body for it A problem I can see it having is the string spacing, I would have to get a nut blank and do the string spacing myself but I think the strings wouldn't fit right on the fret board at the heel as the spacing on a standard width bridge will be too wide for a standard guitar neck also would short scale strings work on it or would they not tune properly and be too floppy? 👍🏻

Its a lot easier than you think all you need is a laser jet printer, pva glue, rag/paintbrush, water and danish oil Firstly get the design you want then print it off mirrored so the design is the right way round when you lay it face down Next coat the paper with pva glue and stick it down and leave it over night to dry Once it's completely dry get a bowl of water and with a rag/paintbrush dampen the paper and start rubbing off the paper if your doing it right the paper should come off and leave the ink on the body once all the paper is removed leave to dry again it will look all white when its dry but as soon as you put danish oil on it the white disappears if you want a worn look then just use some sandpaper and sand to your desired finish Next time I do it I'll take some pics of the process...... 👍🏻

I've acquired some nice Mahogany type timber that was the sides of a snooker table that should make 4/5 bodies but there will be some wastage that should be big enough to make some neck blanks out of? I was thinking of trying to make some one piece fender style necks. I know that its softer than maple, ebony, rosewood etc but was wondering peoples opinions on using Mahogany as a fretboard?....... 👍🏻
