I thought item location said Manchester UK.

Quick look at serial number S9 + 5 digits indicates '79. Poor math or poor typing. Nonetheless this still counts as an misleading description.

  2.
But blend the two pickups equally and the resulting tone is more like the neck pickup sound but with some extra treble added (as you'd expect)* BUT ALSO a load of midrange cut out. Yes, two jazz pickups on full gives you a scooped tone!
Brilliant Alex! This explains why my double P Precision becomes a slap monster when I add the bridge p/up.

  3.
It's the latest version...got it from The Gallery about a year ago. Haven't thought about a price yet- ideally after a trade to avoid making too much of a loss.
OK. If you do decide to sell it (I don't have a BDDI to trade, I use an MXR M80 currently) PM me, cheers.

EDIT: FYI there is a BDDI on Ebay at the moment

  4.
For example, the Stingray will offer a more warm, old school tone, whilst the Sterling offers more aggressive, more mid range punch. The Stingray is somewhat scooped in the mids.

The Pickuips and Preamps are different, but you will get the classic music man vibe with either bass.
Ray has Alnico p/ups and the Sterling has ceramic which gives the tone Duarte has acurately described. Ray is also slightly larger and weighs a bit more too (5ozs or so according to MM).

  5. The most durable finish is going to be a polyester one a la standard Fender finish (both MIM & MIM). Next is going to be a laquer finish with a natural (waxed, oiled, etc) coming in as the least durable. This is only really for dinks and scratches as a suitabley oiled or waxed finsh will the protect the wood nicely from drying out and other contaninant attack (sweat, beer, etc). I'm not sure where auto spray paint would fit if you were thinking of using that at all.

  6. After doing BVs for over ayear now I am finding it easier to do, but sometimes the groove is so different to the vocals that I just can't do it, so I just play the bass line (as is right and proper of course). Long and short of it is, the more you do it, the easier it becomes, as does finding a harmony.

  7.
Great review Sibob
+1 But trying 8 basses is hardly a quick visit now is it? I don't think a quick visit to the gallery is possible as they're so cool in there and they've got such nice gear.

  8.
Do you fancy bringing me one back too??? :)
This will just start a whole of "and me" type posts.

So far be it of me to disappoint............ ME TOO  a 4 string P/J please.

  9.
We play this song at the start of every function gig - I really better go back and listen to the original.

We kick off the second set with Money For Nothing - with luck, alcohol has been consumed and the place starts to jump. Gawd bless da Straits!
We do those 2 too and Sultans is a more interesting line for me (not sure I play JI's actual line, but the meat and tatties of it are there with a bit me thrown in). As I'm singing BVs on MFN I'm very glad the bass line is simplistic or I'd be in real trouble :)

EDIT: I've also been playing Lady Writer with another band and the bass line to this is great fun, bouncing from standard 4/4 to a rhumba feel and back again.

  10.
Yup I realise that, so why is it described as a WL?
Ebay seller being expansive with the "truth" methinks. If he stretched it any further it would rip apart at the seams. This kind of shameless exaggeration would have me heading for the hills despite the 100% feedback rating. As the saying goes, buyer beware.

  11.
Why play it note for note? Tommy Cogbill busked it. Make it yours and play your take on it.
+1 Absolutely. I think we often hold some basslines in too much reverence and feel the need to copy them so slavishly it suppresses our own expression. I've certainly taken to taking the meat and tatties of an original and then making the part my own. Obviously a bit different in tribute bands.

  12. John Illsley is often mocked for his part in Dire Straits which I think is unfair, after all you don't want to stamp all over Mark Knopfler's playing, that'd be like having a dog and barking yourself. Outside of the soloists and obvious exceptions in a band context (RHCP, Level 42, etc) isn't our instrument meant to be supportive?
