1. Poor frankly. I played badly and just couldn't hold my concentration, maybe I'm just tired of the same old songs. No one in the band excelled really, singer kept missing cues and leaving out verses, drummer way too fast and loud, lead player playing motifs sharp or flat and keyboard player annoying everyone with pointless noodling. The one new song I was looking forwrd to doing, Pick Up The Pieces, we passed over as punters were dancing. Well at least they seemed to enjoy it.

  2. I had Diago make me up a short board 330x470mm back when they were first staring out, I think it only cost me about £30 or so, can't believe the price of them now :) despite them being really well made and robust.

+1 or one of those Aria Sinsonido affairs.

Buying a good acoustic may not be a great idea given the extremes of temperature it would have to endure; warm accomodation-outside brrr-very warm bar and then back again. A potential recipe for a cracked top

Woah, he really does have the look of Jaco, couldn't really see that from the You Tube vids. That's not just weird, it's just plain creepy having the dead spitting image and sound of your dead dad in your band.

  5. The guitarist does a pretty good Pat Metheny impression too although not image wise. I wonder if when putting this band together Julius specifically wanted someone who was a Jaco clone? Interestingly the bass player and guitarist are Italian and it's an Italian tour, does Julius live in Italy? The other vid is good too, nice and funky. Really good quality vids for a live performance although audience seem very quiet, so possibly a rehearsal, this one seems more like the gig and very Metheny again.

  6.
I recently bought the pdf back issues of the confusingly titled Bass Gear Magazine (not to be confused with Bass Guitar Magazine) and apart from a slight air of pretentiousness and trying too hard it's actually rather good - much better when printed out rather than trying to read it onscreen. They really do put the T for Tech in their Tests!
Bass Gear Mag is a real Gasaholic's and anorak's porn mag, I love it.
come to Basschat, Talkbass and brand-specific sites for informed opinion and advice.
I saw the words "Basschat & Talkbass" coupled with "informed opinion" and laughed a little bit. I know what you mean though. :)

  7.
Once again I bought Bass Player mag and once again, apart from a Christian McBride feature, there's nothing of interest to me. Less pages, same adverts, same price. Someone wrote in bemoaning this, and the answer was 'blame it on the economy'. They said there was loads of stuff to read on their website, but that sounds like a cop out to me.

I'd hate to stop buying BP, and I'd hate to see it go down the pan, as I've been a supporter for many years, but it looks like I'm going to have to check it out properly in the store before deciding to buy it. The last two issues I could have read in Smith's in 5 mins.

Compared to BGM with it's (relatively minor) faults, I'm afraid our publication wins hands down.
+1 BGM FTW

  8.
Some of the very worst songs & lyrics I've ever heard are on the Stanley Clarke albums. He's a great player but most of his songs are bloody awful - I can't listen to them anymore because they just make me cringe.

It's the same with Victor Wooten - with each album he seems to sing more and more and he really shouldn't.
To paraphrase FranK Zappa "Shut up and play your bass guitar". The need to sing seems to afflict many musicians that previously just played instrumentals, George Benson springs to mind.

I'm always amazed that Mark King manages to play the way he does and sing at the same time. :) I'm now minded to get the first 2 albums as I only have them on vinyl. Dune Tune has always been a favourite noodle.

  9.
Doesn't that pull your trousers and pants up your bum crack?
A poor photo with a loose belt to be honest. But thinking outside the box for a moment what if you were to attach the clip to your underpants? One good pull down on the neck and instant falsetto!

  10. Played with Ashdown gear for 7 years without a day's problem, whilst other people's Ampegs and GKs were always breaking down. Only changed to Mark Bass because IMO Ashdown screwed the pooch with their Superfly and Little Giant designs, I wanted 500W not 2x250W.

  11. It may not be 50s, but that's where their hearts are. Who am I talking about? The Stray Cats of course. Brian Setzer, one of my favourite guitarists with a keen eye for mega slap players, Lee Rocker and Mark Winchester in particular.

  12. My 2 P basses are quite lightweight and, nice as this lightness is, tends to lead to some neck dive. Now we're not talking T'Bird neck dive here, but enough to make them feel a little uncomfortable on a long gig, especially as I suffer from shoulder and neck problems (getting older don't you just love it?). Anyway in an effort to make my main gigging bass more neck and shoulder friendly I moved the strap button up similar to a Spector's position which helped a bit. Today I had an epiphany and by simply adding a spare strap button (in this case a Dunlop Straplock) to a spare belt loop and attaching my strap via the additional hole, I think I may have cured my neck dive problem.

Maybe this might work for any of you who have a similar problem.

  13. New issue dropped through the door yesterday. Interview with Doug Wimbush and review of his sig Spector. But don't be alarmed it isn't all expensive reviews there are some "real world" products in there too. Looks like they are staring to get the gear mix right.

  14. Yeah Bilbo is right, it's all about being able to recognise intervals. I did some interval recognition exercises years ago where you picked a well known interval in a song, i.e. the theme from Jaws = a semitone, somewhere over the rainbow = octave, etc. Hope that makes sense. But just playing a lot will get you recognising intervals and will get you anticipating where the next note is likely to be.

  15. Basic chord sequences follow a specific pattern known as chrod chemistry. In your sequence (assuming the G to be a major) it could be Gmaj, Emin, Cmaj, D7. Do a Google search for chord chemistry, there are a lot of resources.

  16. Just received and listened to the final live gig by Thunder recorded at the Hammersmith Apollo. What a great example of classic rock live, wish I could have been there. Best of all is the mix, not all guitars and kick drum, no Chris Childs' bass is right there clear as a bell and locking down with Harry James as tight as ever. Surely one the best UK rhythm sections ever. If you like Thunder or classic rock in general this is highly recommended. Shame they (see Danny Bowes) decided to call it a day, but all good things come to an end I guess.

  17. I picked up an AKG D5 at the London Music Show which was on a special at the time, but seem to go for about £70 normally. I find that it is more articulate and clear than the SM58s that the others use in my band. Definitely one to check out IMO.

  18.
...and another lesson, folks:

It doesn't matter one jot what an amp, cab or bass sounds like in your living room, or in the shop.

At the gig is where it's at.
That is so true. I was somewhat disappointed with my Schroeder when I got it home and started to noodle to the point where I mearly returned it. But other owners said wait until you play it in a live situation and voila they were right. I was sitting in the mix nicely on my own and able to hear what I was doing on stage (no blur of muddiness).

Trouble is of course is how do you go about demoing amps and cabs in the sales environment? No every amp or cab manufactuer/retailer is as understanding or helpful as Alex (huge big up to you with your customer support) when it comes to trying to return a product because it doesn't sound like you'd hoped.
