1. Looking very nice! Whilst an amount of hum is expected from a single coil p/up, unacceptable levels of RF is not. I'd take it back to the Gallery and compare the hum against other single coil J types to see if it is more than the usual hum and get them to check the wiring (could be a loose earth or similar), that just doesn't sound right to me.

Very true, apparently a pro player once said (I don't know who) "The answers to all your musical questions can be found in your record collection". Listen to all the recommendations suggested here and feel what works for you. I like what Prestia and Rainey do a lot, even though they have wildly different styles. If I can ever channel these guys, even a little bit, I'm a happy bass player.

So true, my two inspirations above had Bernard Purdie and David Garilbaldi, nuff said :)

  3. After a playalong with a bass playing friend the other day I realised that my electric guitar playing days are over and it's time to let my last one go (yeah I pretty much suck these days!). So what we have here is a Paul Reed Smith SE (made in Korea) Singlecut in Tobacco Burst. It's stunning to look at and plays very nicely indeed. The pickups are very good and having done a side by side comparison with Bareknuckle Mules the difference is barely perceptible IMO. It is in pristine condition and comes in the very good quality padded SE gigbag it originally came with, but as this is still just a soft case, pick up, or local handover are the only delivery options. Price now £225. I will be sad to see it go, but electric guitar isn't where my talent lies anymore.

  4.
The problem I'd have with these is the price. For the money, you could get a hand made, nitro-finished, selected wood, built the old school way by a master (if that matters to you) Bacchus Woodline J and some change.

If you're worried about dinking an unblemished bass, yet you'd pay someone to take a belt sander to one... well, I just can't think of anything to say about that :)
A hand built bass for £800, really? Why am I the last to find about these things?

  5. That's a great response from the boss there. I especially liked the reviewing of the CCTV bit, I'm guessing someone's arse is aching from having a boot firmly wedged up it for some time. To then offer a discount is great result, although it would have been nice to have the new bass for your convalesence, getting it cheaper certainly helps soften the initial disappointment. Well done for also posting the resolution of the problem as well as the original gripe.

  6. As mentioned above I have one which I have added another P p/up to. This upgrade was always my intention so I went shopping for a new P bass. I whittled it down to the standard MIM 50's reissue, the Road Worn and a Lakland Skyline Bob Glaub. I demoed these three side by side and the RW played the best, was the lightest and had the best tone to my ears, not a million miles away from the sound and feel of my '63 P. The best thing was that it wasn't the most expensive. So I bought it and I'm very happy with it. The relic look isn't to everyone's taste, but it certainly made having it cut into for the new p/up easier to have done as any potential chipping (there wasn't any) not matter a jot. I did find the nitro on the neck a bit stickier than I like so I stripped that off and shaped the neck a little more to the shape of my '63. I am a happy RW owner YMMV of course.

What annoys me most about the opinions these garner is not about the look as that is a matter of taste, it's the "Oh it's made in Mexico" comments. These are very well made, great sounding basses easily on a par with the MIA instruments, that should be all that matters. No one bitches about the Lakland Skylines and they are madly expensive for a Far Eastern instrument, certanly compared to the G&L Tributes for instance.

  7. The time has come to let my Victor Bailey Acoustic go to make way for a new purchase. I bought this new from The Bass Gallery last year to take away for an extended holiday in Italy. It is in exactly the same condition that I bought it, which includes the small knock you can see on the headstock (if only I'd seen this when I bought it, doh!). It comes in the specific padded Fender gigbag that it came with and because of this only pick up, or local handover is available. How much? In order to move this beauty I've lowered my expectations and will let it go for £365. Full technical details are available here.

  8. I've demoed one of these bad boys and although the 5 string was very good, it was not as good as my old 'Ray5, but I wouldn't expect it to be. However, I thought the 4 string was actually better sounding than my old 3 band 4 string 'Ray and now I'm very much in the market for one of those in honeyburst

  9.
Hi, if you want some bass playing to aspire to in the blues field listen to Roscoe Beck on the early Robben Ford albums, Handful Of Blues, Robben Ford And The Blue Line, Mystic Mile and Talk To Your Daughter. You could also come down to the Grey Horse in Kingston tomorrow where I'm doing the Robin Bibi blues jam.
Roscoe Beck FTW

  10.
That's great. Respect to Mr Ezbass. (Is that a removable headstock?)

Yes it removeable as the board was only so big and the cake would not looked right any smaller.
Congrats Mrs Ezbass, that's brilliant.
Neck profile is a bit chunky, did it taste nice?

    Mmmmm, caaaakkkeee. :)
Yes it was yummy, a Mississippi Mud Cake (chocolate fudge kinda thing).

  11. It was my best mate's 50th birthday party this weekend and Mrs Ezbass stepped up to the plate for a celebration cake. My buddy has had his 'Ray for 18 years and it is his go to bass, so I said to the wife that she should make a cake in the shape of a Stingray. It turned out to be a lot harder to do than expected, but I think it turned out OK and the recipient was well chuffed, so I thought I'd share the result with you. Yes I know the neck is short, but it just looked aesthetically better with a truncated neck.

Hope this is the right forum for this kind of thing.

  12.
I am totally ready for the "glass of wine, soft lights" answers. I am so sad that I still think they are funny :)
Doh! I was so ready to make this joke. "I'll get my coat" hell I didn't even get a chance to take it off!

  13. The fact that you've spilled your guts here (very articulately, not just a rant) will have either i) been cathartic or ii) convinced you of all the reasons to call it a day.

Methinks it's time to chuck in the towel and move on.

  14.
A DJ/PJ5 if you dont mind ;-)

Its at the Gallery now and im picking it up on 24th Oct and straight off to a gig so ill post back after the gig and let you know what i think.
My bad :)

Really eager to hear your thoughts on the changes, hope it works out just as you expect. Can't see why it won't, highly respected p/up (even Sadowsky use them) in the hands of a highly skilled workshop, with a neck you already like (a lot), it'll all be good.

  15. A good result for the consumer, certainly helped by your persistance. It's not good for Dawson's though and the fact that Roland are having to deliver direct so that it gets done correctly is a sign that lack of customer care and attention to detail is endemic throughout the Dawson's organisation. I for one will not be buying from them either by mail, or at their Altrincham shop when I visit family up there. After all this I hope the Roland box does what you want it to do.

OK, probably won't sound as good as your vinyl copy. But Danny's playing still sounds very tasty, good call Clarky.
Link not working for me :)

  17.
really cant be bothered to tell him. Bless our US cousins!
I thought item location said Manchester UK.

Quick look at serial number S9 + 5 digits indicates '79. Poor math or poor typing. Nonetheless this still counts as an misleading description.
