1.
Nordy is now in so ive withdrawn this for now.

Im going to stick with it for a while and see how it goes. It will be good practice for when i get a SR4 at some point.
Is the Nordy a direct replacement Dave, or did you swap the covers over? How does it sound now? I found that after playing Ps and 'Rays for a while that I find J necks cramped and like playing a broomstick. This is a pain as a lot of the basses I'd like the look of feature J type necks, keeps the GAS down though :). Stick with the Ray34, I found that prefer it's neck to my old US maple necked 'Ray, far less clubby.

  2. Nice balanced review and another RW convert. I'm glad to see that your J doesn't seem to have the ciggie burn on the headstock as this is probably the cheesiest of the relic work done on the range. I'm not normally a fan of fiesta red, but with the relicing it really works.

  3.
Yes I still can't belive how lucky I vas to get it for such a low price. It is definatly a keeper & where can I find replacement scratchplates for this type of bass. Now what will I find at CC when I go again.
Standard 'Ray p/gs fit, so the likes of WD Music, etc, are your next port of call.

  4. £25 seems pretty OK to me too, plus you'll be getting a level of aftercare should anything fail. Internal preamps are easy enough, but can be a bit fiddly especially if you've not soldered for ages, plus you'd need the right soldering iron if you don't have one already which would cost of course.

  5.
Yes you are right, I just didn't bother pointing it out as the issue is which to go for in terms of colour scheme, they are both slab body with no contour., both 51 reissues
My bad, should've gone to Specsavers as I swore I could see contouring (maybe it was the Sting reference that threw me as his is a 54)

Nice, I thought that would work.

  6. You've definitely got to play songs you know and like or you won't enjoy it. Make sure there are some nice slowish ones too so you can work on your vibrato. My favourite for this is Steely Dan's Rikki Don't Lose That Number (really oscillating my finger on the root V intro). I like to swoop around in a 80s Pino stylee occasionally, but really it's all about the vibrato for me.

  7. Welcome to the "Worn Side" (suitable Darth Fender voice required here). Yep they do seem to be in a different league to their other MIM counterparts and I preferred it over a Lakland Glaub that I also demoed against it which was more expensive. I love the light weight, but this does mean you get a fair bit of neck dive, but it's worth it. The looks may put some off, but the feel and sound are what it's all about. Bring on the photographic evidence!

  8. Does the DB section do pics? Good score on the NS, I've "played" them in stores and they seem very playable. I would love to own a proper DB but the ones I've seen and "played" (really who am I kidding?) have huge actions and I think that'd put me off pretty quickly if it couldn't be adjusted to something less Herculean, I mean I can actually get my hand under there!? So what's the score DB chaps, what's the score on DB actions (acoustic and EUB) me and Warwickhunt want to know?

Keeping my fingers crossed that I'm not just a woos :)

  9. I used to gig with just one Ashdown 2x10 and a 300 watt amp in my 7 piece covers band and it was OK. However, I now much prefer my Schroeder 2x12 and Markbass 500w head, not for the volume (it doesn't get turned beyond 10 O'Clock really) but for the slightly bigger bottom end and the way it now fits in the mix sooo much better. One cab setups rule (especially come packing up time) and if you've got PA reinforcement you're laughing.

  10. I played the RW and Classic 50s back to back also with a Lakland Skyline Glaub, but not the Highway1 at that time, although I have played them. The RW kicked the Classic 50s butt (as it should for the extra dough) and was better than the Lakland IMO. Generally better woods than the 50s and I think the p/up may be of US manufacture. The relic job is OK, a little cheesy here and there, but the playability and tone were the reason I bought "that" one (hey they're all different one way and another eh?). The Highway1 has a rosewood board so is a good deal shallower that the big ass maple 50s number on the RW if I remember correctly. Personally I don't get on with nitro necks as I find them sticky and stripped the finish of my RW (also sanded the neck a bit less fat too) so a win for the Highway's satin finish there. I've never been too sure about having a Badass on a P as they sound just fine with the old school bit of bent metal (I actually prefer the threaded saddles for ultimate side to side adjustment), so I'm not sure if either comes out on top there. My RW is super light, but of course that does lead to a bit of neck heaviness. Ultimately (and you know this of course) if you can, you've got to try two side by side, but finding somewhere with both might be a challenge. Either would be a good buy, however, as there are many, many happy owners of both types. It may just come down to which neck profile and material you prefer.

  11.
My bass is way too good for my level of playing - but why should that stop anyone getting something that they want and they can afford.

I have a Reggie Hamilton custom shop V jazz bass and it is brilliant. It's pretty light on weight (don't like heavy), plays like a dream, has both jazz and Precision pups for very different sounds (or a blend of the two) and can have the zing of active or the smoothness of passive at the touch of a button.

Infact there's only one thing about it that I don't really like - it looks too shiny and new. I got it secondhand and it's too bad that it hadn't been around the block a few more times! (I'm not intending on dragging it behind the car anytime soon ...)
The custom shop RGV is the nicest 5 string I've played, good score there. I'd never say an instrument is too good for someone, it's a tool to be used by whoever, you wouldn't say an expensive hammer is too good for you if you're just a weekend DIYer. Enjoy that bass, the worn mojo will come with time.

  12. I think my biggest complaint about being a live performer is that never get to really hear what I sound like FOH. I stand out front when we're soundchecking via wireless, but that's not the same as when you're really digging in and the place is full of punters. If the crowd are hearing what I hear (unlikely) then my fave tones are when I play my 63 P bass with the tone wide open on Town Called Malice, with it all the way off on Three Little Birds and finally with the tone half way on Tommy Castro's Nasty Habits (a really nice groove). Maybe someday we'll do a live recording and I'll get to hear it.

  13.
and most importantly a big fan.
Absolutely, I hate playing to an empty room so it's always best to bring your own crowd members. I'll get my coat.

Seriously though I take as little as possible, spare fuses and batteries, old (but not dead) strings, I can use the xlr from my mic if I get a lead or wireless failure or use the xlr from my DI if the amp fails. I use George L's solderless cables so they're fixed really quickly if one breaks anyway (hasn't happened yet).

  14.
I like that Red JP! :)
Me too, add another string on a 4 over 1 headstock and that would be a real winner. I look forward to trying these out hopefully in the not too distant future.

  15. "G string driving me crackers" I'd swap to Y fronts  . I'll get my coat :) .

On a serious note (no pun here) is this a new problem and have you checked your intonation set up? To be fair without a compensated nut all the lower positions are a compromise, especially the G (this is where you'll normally see the most dramatic saddle position, on all my basses this saddle is the furthest forward) but you should be able to find something that sounds OK. Could be a duff string of course.

  16. There is the Tascam MP-BT1 which is an mp3 version of their CD product http://www.tascam.com/products/mp-bt1.html. Conversely you could use whatever Korg's latest Pandora unit is http://www.korg.co.uk/products/effects/pan...x5d/fx_px5d.asp, I used to plug my CD player into one of the older models before I changed to Tascam for an all in one solution (although I do use the line in for stuff on my mp3 player).
